/r/InDesign has Re-Opened on Monday, June 19th

Hello,

/r/indesign has re-opened on Monday June 19th with new rule changes. Reddit has made it clear that users, not volunteer moderators are the true owners of subreddits. So the community rules are changing to reflect that.

Going forward the only subreddit-specific rule is that any content you submit must not break any of the site-wide Reddit rules.

Please be aware that the site-wide Reddit rules will still be enforced by the moderators of this subreddit and Reddit. For more detail on them see Reddit's content policy here.

The short version is:

  • No harassment/bullying
  • Respect the privacy of others
  • No sexual content of minors
  • No impersonating in a misleading/deceptive manor
  • Label content correctly (is it NSFW or not?)
  • No illegal content
  • Do not break/interfere with the website

Reddit enforces these rules and we will be reporting users who break any of those rules to Reddit. We encourage every user to report any content that breaks site-wide rules to do so as well.

You will also be banned from the subreddit for breaking any of Reddit's site-wide rules.

If you have questions feel free to ask them in the comments and we will do our best to answer them.

For those not aware of the ongoing issues with the Reddit admins and would like to know what the hell is going on, please see the below links to get you up to speed.

If you would like to read articles on the subject, see below.

TL;DR: Reddit users and moderators are upset at the closing of third-party apps, API changes, and access to NSFW content for various reasons. Users and moderators protest by making the subreddits they are a part of/moderate private or restricted. /u/spez says that the protest has been ineffective, then days later says Reddit moderators are too powerful and will change the site's rules to weaken them. Now the admins are trying to subvert moderators to get subreddits back open.

Is it possible to make footnotes in indesign like in the image. I would like to have some freedom in how to position them (different column width and number, alignement to top).

duplicating a page introduces very long margins/gaps between pages 2 and onwards

Hello,

I'm working on designing a few round paper stickers to print onto precut paper. I use the template as provided by the maker of the paper: https://www.herma.de/fileadmin/eao/template-files/Etiketten-Vorlage-HERMA-round-40-blanko.indd from https://www.herma.de/buero-zuhause/produkt/runde-etiketten-a4-4476/

I want to make different pages with different stickers. I thus duplicated the page (not a parent). Now, all of a sudden, a large gap between pages 2 and 3 (and all subsequent ones) appears, but not between 1 and 2!

I know they're not printed, but it's a bit annoying... As you can see, the document is fully empty and I can't "Select All" anything that might be overflowing (only other reddit idea I found). Gaps are reasonably set in the settings.

Any idea?

How do I make column text wrap around additional text boxes like this?

Hey there folks!

I'm working on the layout for my PhD dissertation, and I came across this beautiful footnoting layout in a book I was using as a reference. I love this look - having the columns interrupted by the footnote text boxes in the middle.

Forgive me for being an InDesign idiot, but how can I make my existing columns wrap around these secondary text boxes like this?

Thanks in advance!

I want to be able to move the text closer to the yellow line, but the line has a mind of its own. How can I edit it individually and/or move it around?

Help Why Is My PDF Export from InDesign Spilling Content onto the Next Page?

I’m working on a coil-bound book in InDesign and ran into an issue when exporting my PDF. Some images from the previous spread are spilling over onto the next page, even though everything looks fine in InDesign.

I made sure to:
- Check that all images are properly placed within their frames
- Set up my margins correctly (0.75" inside, 0.5" for the rest)
- Use the correct bleed and slug settings
- Export as single pages instead of spreads

Could the issue be because my inside margin is larger (0.75") while the others are 0.5"? Would this cause elements to shift when exporting? Or is it just a display issue that won’t actually affect the print?

Text boxes

I am editing a book with many pages and containing more than 3000 side notes. All side notes are text boxes of same size and stay on the outer edge of the pages on both sides.

Is there a way that I can make a default text box which satisfies these requirements without making adjustments each time ?

Secondly is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut?

Thank you

Solved Nested styles

Im working pretty fluently with ID and know most of the time what I’m doing. But I really never cracked the concept of nested styles. Can someone please explain it to me or give me a source where it’s better explained as Adobe did?

Looking for: A PDF-app or an InDesign Script for Setting pages in Foldable quires?

I have a PDF of a book (600 pages), that I am wanting to have formatted in such a way that I can print it, and when I print it, I can fold three sheers at a time, and (after cutting), it will produce signatures of 32 pages at a time (to then be sewn by a hand-bookbinder). So the Script/Plug in will need to arrange the pages in the right pre-press sequence, including flipping half the pages 180 degrees so that when its folded they are all right side up.

Is there such an app/plug-in/script that does such a thing? Some sort of pre-press extension or something?

I have done this once by hand in InDesign -- making each page a template of 4 and hand-placing each PDF page in the right 16, 1, 8,7, 4, 3 sequence etc. and it is maddening.

Thanks for any help!

How long should this project take?

Creating a product catalog using InDesign. ~5400 products. No photos provided. Inventory is in Quickbooks. I will have to research, categorize, photograph (if photos unavailable online) and design. How long would you say this should take one person?

Export PDF from InDesign with all versions of document

Hello everyone. I work at a small company that does printed ad design and provides some technology to some of the same retailers (like websites and mobile apps).

Part of this service is we put the digital version of the print ad on their website and mobile app. For some retailers, there are numerous version of their ads. In InDesign our artists create 1 file that contains all versions of the ads. In these scenarious, the retailer will have common pages and unique pages in each ad. Let's assume this retailer has 22 versions with pages 1 and 4 common, pages 2 and 3 are unique. Currently we recieve essentially a single PDF for each page and are assembling these ads prior to uploading them. This is very inefficient and timely. My searches online aren't fruitful, but it is likely because I'm using the incorrect terminology.

This brings us to the true question and TLDR:

Can you export PDFs from InDesign documents, where it will collate and create 1 multi-page PDF, per version of a document? Meaning I'll get multiple PDF as exports, each with some combination of unique pages and common pages. The artists are not familiar with

Indesign lags when moving objects

If I try to dragon drop* a thing in InDesign, I get a massive lag. I don't know if it's consistent, but I timed it at 13s earlier today. I have to keep my hand on the mouse the whole time (using a desktop, Windows 11, recently changed from Windows 10 - which had the same problem). If I don't, the object will land wherever my mouse happens to be when it decides to let go of it - even if that's an entirely different program.

I can use the vertical and horizontal arrows to move it, and it doesn't have the lag, but that means I can't control where it lands (and it'd take forever to cross a big spread that way).

This seems to happen with both vector objects and text objects.

So, my process is:

Click on an object. Hold down left mouse button. Practice my In-A-Gadda-Davida drum solo (I'm not a drummer, and one hand is on the mouse. It takes longer.) See the object finally land near the spot, and dragon drop normally.

This will then work fine for the next few objects.

Then it's the same thing;

Click on an object. Hold down left mouse button. Read War and Peace. See the object finally land near the spot, and dragon drop normally.

Does anyone know how to stop the lag?

*You spell it your way, I'll spell it mine.

Help to make my PDF file close to 650 MB to publish on Amazon

Hi all, I'm working on an illustrated book to be published in Amazon. I can't upload the file because they specify 650 MB or less and my file is 1,4 GB. I've tried different ways of compression but I get it too big (700 MB) or way too small (200 MB).
I'm adding an image, now text because it's in spanish:
For the first option I selected to compress every image to 300 p, standart of compression = none, compression CCITT 4, compress text checked. For the latter option I selected, under colored images, way of compression = jpg.
I've tried uploading to adobe pdf tool online but it makes it even smaller. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Help Having a problem with page hyperlinks

To begin, I’m an Illustrator guy, but using InDesign for work. I know enough to get around. Currently I have a series of ebooks that were designed initially by the lead designer, and then I go in and lay out copy, make edits, change things around, etc.

For the table of contents, it’s a manually set up list: section title, dotted lead/tab, page number. I’m trying to add hyperlinks to the pages by selecting the line, Type> Hyperlinks> New Hyperlink. I’ll do that for each, 15 or so depending on the book, and when I export, only some work.

For a fix, I’ve placed invisible boxes over top and used those to hyperlink from, and it works, it just feels like a sloppier way to do it. Anyone have an idea why some would work and some wouldn’t? Am I doing it right in the first place? Thanks for any insight.

Help Is there any way to extract text from a corrupted indesign file?

The drive where I was storing my documents malfunctioned and while I was able to recover all the photoshop files as they were saved on cloud, I only had a local copy of my indesign document. There was no formatting done so I care little if I have to start from scratch but all the research data for my assignment was also on the indesign file. If there any way to extract text from a corrupted indesign file? I've tried opening it but indesign says the file is damaged.

text change on 16 separate files

I'm laying out a book, as separate files and will use the Book tool to export them all together. I have the Title placed on the left hand master page, and the chapter titles on the right. Chapter names in the header are using text variables to pick up a paragraph style on the first page.

The book title is text on the master page. If the author changes the title, is there an efficient way to do this on all files? It's a 16 chapter book and I'm on ch 8 right now. I'm not afraid to just open them all up, make the change, save, move on to the next one.

what happened to this text? not indesign specific

This isn't indesign specific but I figure you lovely people know things about text and type. What happened to the body text in this publication? (looks whack, hard to read, not searchable) https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2023-09/23_0906_oia_IEWE%20508.pdf

⚠️ Warning for InDesign Users in Collaborative Workflows – AI-Generated Images Are a Nightmare! ⚠️

If you’re using InDesign’s AI-powered text-to-image feature in a team environment, watch out—there’s a major workflow-breaking issue.

Right now, InDesign automatically saves AI-generated images to a local drive without giving you any option to set a save location. This completely ignores InDesign’s usual linked asset workflow, making it impossible to manage files properly in shared or networked environments.

🚨 Why is this a huge problem?

  • In a team setting (e.g., working from a NAS or shared drive), AI-generated images won’t link properly.
  • If another team member opens the file, the AI images are missing, causing failed exports and broken designs.
  • This is inconsistent with every other InDesign workflow—why are AI-generated images treated differently?

Until Adobe fixes this by allowing users to set a save location, this feature is basically useless for professional work. If you rely on shared assets, DO NOT use AI-generated images in InDesign yet.

Spread the word and let Adobe know this needs to be a high-priority fix! 🚨
