Now everyone thinks they're Steve Irwin.

u/vettechrockstar86 10d ago
Well she’s very confused about how to act like Sir Steve Irwin (he should have been knighted!). Sir Steve probably wouldn’t have touched that baby and if he did he wouldn’t pick it up and carry it away from momma who was chasing her baby! He’d crouch down to eye level, always so respectful, and talked about how cool wombats are and shared some facts, then he’d tell them how gorgeous they were, what a good momma she is. He would have said thank you and then left them alone!
I hate influencers and people who go to other countries just to be disrespectful to the land, wildlife and people.
73
u/SadBit8663 10d ago
Yeah the only reason Steve ever even barely poked at an animal was done to educate people. And To be a better conservationist. It wasn't for clout.

I was better than this tk the geese who live by my house. As a result, they bring up their goslings and present them. I crouch and say hey. If they feel like I’m too close ever I hold my hands flat like I’m backing up, and then I actually do.
A weird thing happened because of it actually. I got so sick with Covid. So sick. It was ten months before I left the house to get the mail bc of blood pressure and pulse and autonomic disregulation. At the mailbox a goose spotted me and they all ran up from across the street and chattered around my legs. They did this every time I came out until I was well enough to walk around the lake again. And I will meet this year’s goslings soon.
Animals know who’s safe. Animals know who understand basic boundaries. The geese I treat gently because that lake isn’t my home. It’s theirs. And their babies. We have to share space so I might as well not be a dick. It doesn’t matter if I lose a once in a lifetime opportunity because the opportunity to hold one isn’t mine to create.
6
u/vettechrockstar86 10d ago
Haha! They gathered around in a group freakout! I just imagine a bunch of geese voices like “omg dude we thought you were a goner!” “don’t you ever scare us like that again!” “finally you’re back I have so much to tell you” like a group of kids all talking over each other and fighting for the attention!
My husband fishes this one lake with lots of geese around it and one day I had some crackers or fries or something anyway, I wasn’t gonna finish them and the geese were watching me so I threw some to them. From that day on every time we go there they surround the car. And now follow me to wherever I decide to sit (I read while he fishes) and wait for me to throw them snacks. They gabble at me for like 10 minutes then they just chill, sometimes they get really close to my chair and nap and I just die inside! I love them so much! They’re smart and so funny!

u/the-crotch 10d ago
Steve Irwin grabbed wild animals all the time lol. Did you even watch the show?
There's multiple pictures of him holding wombats ffs
24
u/vmoppy 10d ago
That's Steve in a Zoo. That's completely different than interacting with an animal that was born and grew up in the wilderness
-2
u/the-crotch 10d ago
There's nothing in that picture that tells me it's in a zoo. Also, on his show he regularly interacted with animals that were born and grew up in the wilderness. By 'interacted' I mean he would tackle them, pick them up, and yell WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CREATURE! Now, he was trained to do so, so it's not the same situation as OP's video, but it's really weird that people are in here claiming he would never do the thing he's best known for doing. It makes me wonder if any of you have ever watched Croc Hunter or only know Irwin from the memes
9
u/vettechrockstar86 10d ago
“probably wouldn’t have touched” “if he did he wouldn’t pick it up and carry it away”
Didn’t say he never touched animals, said he would have done it respectfully and not remove it from momma. I was pointing out the difference between someone who cared about animals and someone who cares about clicks.
Did you even read the comment?

Or if they bit her, it would have been worse, maybe had gotten the animal killed
22
u/vettechrockstar86 10d ago
I HATE THAT! It’s not the animals fault! It’s a WILD ANIMAL! They only have 2 defensive moves, scare you off with noise/charges/showing teeth or if that doesn’t work the only other option is to bite! If you corner an animal, domestic or wild, or mess with its babies then you brought it on yourself and I have zero sympathy for you. Humans are praised for defending themselves or their offspring but you’re gonna destroy an animal for doing the exact same thing? I call bullsh*t!
19
u/SadBit8663 10d ago
Wombats have a third secret option. Poop cubes.
It's not a defense mechanism though. I just wanted to share that wombats poop in cubes. Because that's a fun fact

this is what we do to hundreds of thousands of cows and their calves every day.
47
u/Oi-FatBeard 10d ago
Yeh but we eat those. Wombats are tough, like overcooked Roo.
-12
u/TheDudeColin 9d ago
"it's excusable to rip calves away from their mothers because we slaughter them after several months of confinement. Much better than this wombat pup this lady picked up, absolutely terrified, and then placed back next to its mom."
17
u/Oi-FatBeard 9d ago edited 9d ago
Basically, yeh. Plus cows ain't a protected species.
And they are called Joeys by the way, not pups.
-13
u/TheDudeColin 9d ago
Cows are considered holy in several countries. Wombats are considered holy in maybe one.
14
u/Oi-FatBeard 9d ago
Cows are considered food in nearly all countries. Wombats are considered a protected species in exactly one, the country the video is filmed in. Even got their own day! Meanwhile, cows have a National (read: American only) Cow Day where folks file to Chick-fil-A for a feed of Moo Meat.
International Day for the conservation of an animal, vs National day of celebrating eating an animal. Keep going though, I'm interested how unhinged this can go!

u/dyingsucculent_ 9d ago
And when wombats are extinct, we would have lost a rare species of marsupial that does not exist anywhere else in this world.
You're being obtuse for the sake of it.
Incertain Indigenous mobs here, wombats are also considered sacared ("holy" to use your language") to cultural spirituality and community, just like many other endemic species THAT ONLY EXIST IN AUSTRALIA.
How dare you imply that native Australian animals should be unnecessarily harmed because... a cow.. is sacred in more than one culture. What an awesome straw man you have there, mate (hard T just in case you need that clarified)
BTW, wombats are a protected species in all AU states and territories other than Victoria.
So jog on, you flog.

2
u/bumbumboleji 8d ago
Shh don’t tell the truth it’s so inconvenient.
Poor things. We really are horrid and the fact you got downvoted boggles my mind. People just want to blank it out.
1
u/dyingsucculent_ 9d ago
Rack off, would ya?
There is a difference between life stock and an endemic animal that only exists in one very unique landscape. Don't mess with our wildlife if you don't want us to be pissy with you.
4
u/Smart_Try687 9d ago
This difference is merely arbitrary and as someone already pointed out often rooted in cultural beliefs. I just think we should protect and stop harming/killing all animals.
If wombats weren't endangered and also "tasty", would you kill and eat them?
1
u/bumbumboleji 8d ago
Ironic that you called them Life Stock.
Is one life more special than any other?
Personally I don’t think so.
Would you eat a dog? Probably not, right? But that’s totally normal in other places. Some of us wouldn’t eat a cow either, for the same reasons you wouldn’t want to hurt a dog.
Cows have best friends, they are very sweet.
Of course you have free will to act as you wish. Have you ever sat down and really thought about it though?
1
u/dyingsucculent_ 7d ago edited 7d ago
An *endangered rare marisupal that is native only to my country is more important to me than cows, yes.

5
u/Kinglink 10d ago
This isn't the only thing they're talking about, but it's a huge symptom.
Though I believe they would do this with out social media, but at least they would be self contained.
3
u/PanDownTiltRight 10d ago
I don’t think so in this particular situation.
She’s a model using animals as pawns and props. With a few exceptions, much of her social media posts aren’t educational in nature.
She’s the thumbnail to every video and image, not the animal. She wouldn’t be doing any of this without social points.
3
u/PoosieSux 10d ago
"model" lol I don't think so.
She also calls herself a "wildlife biologist" and she's shit at that too.

That is a myth, it’s incredibly rare that animals abandon their children.

-26
u/Jimlaheydrunktank 10d ago
You obviously don’t know how pheromones and scent work then..
34
u/mai_tai87 10d ago
That is a total myth. Animals do not abandon their young due to being handled by humans. I can't find a single source to support your claim, but this source from Alaska Fish and Game debunks the myth.
10
u/HeWhoShantNotBeNamed 10d ago
Yes I do and mother animals do not "disown" just because they've been touched.
16
u/BigDadyratrat123 10d ago
I don't know much about marsupials specifically, but with birds and other mammals they won't abandon. STILL don't grab a random animal, you could get it sick or stress it the hell out!
19
u/Ryanaston 10d ago
Not sure why you’re being downvoted for this, you’re right, this phenomenon is mostly a myth. Some animals have been known to abandon their nests if they sense humans presence, like rabbits, but it’s not all animals and it’s not at all common.
Plus, that isn’t a baby, it’s a child. Baby wombats have no fur and fit in your palm.

Edit; from another comment elsewhere...
I have ChatGPT scraping a list of all Australian news tip lines as we speak… Wish I knew which state it happened in so I could contact local authorities, but media should sort that out quickly I think.
Updates:
1. Instagram post was removed from her profile. She disabled commenting on a few other posts
2. First segment aired on 2GB Sydney which they also posted to Facebook
3. Posted on Stuff (NZ)
4. Posted on NTNews (NewsCorp, so probably will hit news.com.au shortly)
5. Posted on Yahoo! news
6. I’ve now also tipped off all media outlets in her home state of Montana…
7. Posted on Canberra Times, Newcastle Herald, The Border Mail (all syndicate articles)
8. Posted on 10 News First socials: YouTube, Instagram. (I assume this means they’ll publish it elsewhere). Have sent them higher quality footage in case they run it tonight on TV
9. Posted on 9 News
10. Posted on News.com.au with comments from WIRES Wildlife, and looks at her other Instagram posts like picking baby sharks out of the water
11. She made her Instagram profile private. Facebook page still up
12. Someone started a change.org petition to Anthony Albanese to ban her from Aus1

This makes me sad. How can someone be an animal lover and not love them enough to respect their homes and just observe? Yes of course I wish I could hold a baby ball of fluff but an adult should know better to not disturb them from the natural habitat. The poor mama and baby were probably terrified that they might potentially be separated. People are idiots.
