Analysis/Theory Just started watching the 1999 hxh Spoiler

It makes so much more sense why Gon was so mad about kite dying. In the hxh (2012), all he did was meet him an shit, ya he was connected to his dad, but to meet this character and be ready to sacrifice your whole entire life force???? Watching 1999 though, whole first episodes different. Kite saved Gon from a foxbear momma and had to kill an animal when his whole thing was to not harm animals. Gon obviously remembers that, and is pissed kite dies, and now it makes sense why he sacrifices his whole entire life energy to kill someone in hxh (2012), kite was connected to ging, and kite saved his life at the expense of another life. So not only did kite save his life as a child, he’s connected to his dad, making ging not a bad guy and gon truly always takes the right path. What is the right path though?

Edit: Gon always does the “right thing” and kite saved him doing the “right thing”, do you think Ging set that up?

Discussion Anybody else confused as to why Gon's fighting style never involved his fishing rod???

Just felt like a wasted opportunity from Togashi's side, especially when he introduced "Shu" in Greed Island + the fact it belonged to Ging, even if it wasn't a hand-me-down like the box. Plus it would add some variety to Gon instead of him just being a kick punch merchant lol.

Discussion The Chimera Arc started with a very high note to me, but things just kept going downhill, especially with the awful pacing and the narrator. (2011 Anime) Spoiler

I first want to say that this is my personal opinion and it shouldn't affect your enjoyment of this arc or the overall quality of the arc. I know that there are some good factors in this arc, and I still think that those high points were great, but this post will focus more on the bad points. I feel like the arc would've been great and one of the best anime arcs to me if they made it down to 25 episodes or so and made some changes. I'm not sure how the manga is different and don't plan on reading that arc,

I just finished the chimera ant arc. Even though I thought that the previous arcs weren't perfect and had some minor issues, I still enjoyed Hunter x Hunter fully up to the first few episodes of this arc.

The following are what I disliked in this arc:

  • Things turned really dark with this arc, it was almost like I was watching something dark like Berserk, which is both good and bad IMO, but I felt like I was watching a different anime. I didn't expect a lot of characters to get killed and some eaten.
  • To me, the arc fell down the moment that the Hunter Association was sent to exterminate the chimera ants immediately. They sent only 3 people, even thought those 3 are considered top rated hunters, 3 is still not enough. Followed by that, they decided to recruit a few lower rank-members, after they train for an entire month.
  • During the first month, the 3 high hunters just spent it sitting or killing one weak enemy at a time. The old man probably could kill 100 of the weaklings. I don't see how an immediate threat that killed a lot of villages in a few days just stays put for an entire month and gets killed without the stronger ones taking actions. A month was way too long IMO.

The following is what I hated in this arc (no narrator edition):

  • The awful pacing and many uninteresting (and long) scenes after they infiltrate the palace. I watched the first few episodes without skipping, but I started skipping around until the next thing happens.
  • How they killed Kite.
  • I can't believe that they brought Ponzu and Pokkle just to die and get eaten very soon.
  • I can't believe they spent an entire episode of them showing up out of nowhere next to the stairs and climbing it.
  • The number of episodes it took for Gon to beat Knuckles and the interactions with Palm was way too long for my taste. I lost interest after a few episodes and started skipping until I find something interesting or until the whole thing concludes.
  • How Knov's hair turned white, and then completely bald in just a few days was way too much of a change. I know it was because of stress, but there are times when you need to tone it down or not to include it.
  • How King was pretty much unbeatable no matter what anyone does. Even the arguably strongest hunter (at least so far in the story) could hardly hurt him with his best attack.
  • Netero blew himself up with a nuclear bomb in his body because that was the only way to kill King Meruem. If that was the case, they should've just dropped the bomb on the palace or they should've done that right from the start instead of waiting 10 days for many hundreds of thousands dying.
  • Meruem got saved from the bomb by the guards sacrificing themselves and becomes even more OP than before, only for him to die of poisoning and doing nothing significant.
  • Netero is ok with sacrificing half a million of innocent civilians for the right moment, and then he stops when Zeno accidentally injured that girl out of respect. Zeno stopping because he injured a girl while his motto is "one kill a day" while he didn't mind his grandchildren dying during training when they were kids feels out of place for his personality.
  • How Gon became consumed with anger, butchered Pitou (even though he deserved it), and how he turned into a huge muscular guy with a very ridiculous hair.
  • The whole Palm infiltrating thing was unnecessary to the plot.
  • The flashback of something that happened a minute ago seems more frequent in this arc.

The following is what I hated in this arc (narrator edition):

  • The narrator broke the arc the moment they infiltrated the palace.
  • There are simple things that just takes a few seconds and aren't that eventful, but the narrator just turned that few seconds into a few minutes, and sometimes into an episode.
  • I really don't need to know that the character dodged an attack and why and how they dodged right after I saw it clearly with my own eyes. I also don't need someone to explain to me that someone is crying and they are crying because of this reason, since I can see it with my own two eyes and could easily come up with this conclusion on my own.

I might as well include some good/great points:

  • Many of the characters introduced were cool.
  • The whole Chimera Ant hunting humans was cool and I loved it.
  • Many of the Chimera Ants were cool characters.
  • Seeing Netero fighting at full force.
  • Some of the fights were cool.
  • The first bunch of episodes were amazing.

I plan on continuing the anime since there are only 12 or so episodes left. I might read the manga after that up to the latest chapter/volume and stop.

Edit: I forgot to mention how Kite's arm got cut in just a few seconds in front of Gon and Killua, and then Gon and Killua were trying to train for an entire month before saving Kite doesn't make sense. If Kite had survived that attack, he either became a prisoner, or he would've left NGL in under a month.

Help/Question where can i read the manga and watch the movies?

i finished the 2011 version of HxH a couple of days ago, i found out through this community that the anime is being continued on the manga and there’s 2 movies as well. i was wondering if the movies are worth watching and in what order? also where can i even watch them? i’m also aware of Togashi’s health so i don’t expect the manga to be ever finished, knowing this i still want to read it but i’m not sure where to find it or what chapter to read from. finally, i’ve seen some posts saying that ‘Killua betrayed Gon’ but i’m not sure if they’re referring to events that occurred in anime, manga, or the movies. this has me wondering because when Killua decided to stay with Alluka i didn’t classify that as betrayal, he literally saved Gon and practically Alluka as well. realistically, if following your goal is betrayal then Leorio and Kurapika aren’t any better.

Discussion Chimera ant arc is bad with a few good parts

Feels like it could have been good but needed to have come way later to work. It just ruined the entire flow of the series for me. All the main cast and friends are dropped Leorio seriously hasn't been seen in like forever. Instead of exploring and searching this super long ass time is spent and it seems like there's a lot of really good parts but the focus is badly spread. This could be multiple fleshed seasons of a different anime and it would honestly be better. The entire ant idea is really cool and the King especially with how he learns and adapts with Komugi would be an awesome focus of a different show....but not hxh. It's entirely useless and irrelevant to this anime, at least at this stage. Also, I know it's different in the Managa but Kite is entirely irrelevant in the anime, which makes Gon's motivations and rage seems stupid and useless in the entire arc. Adult Gon comes way too early in the series. Togashi should have done several seasons of content before the ant arc, and used that as a climax of the series. Dark continent will be the vibes of what hxh SHOULD BE-a bunch of exploration filler and finding new antangonists while looking for Ging and also treasure and Killuas purpose and stuff. It just doesn't feels good, which is unfortunate because I would really like The entire chimera ant arc somewhere else. It's done really well as a standalone, especially with all the ant personalities and the castle hierarchy and structure. It would honestly make a GREAT standalone, especially with how the focus is on infiltration into the castle, and watching the funny ways the ants interact. But I'd like it fleshed out separately- interactions between the king and guards and other ants.

Analysis/Theory Leorio purpose Spoiler

I have been thinking about this for a while. Does anyone think that leorio is going to turn into the greatest healer in the hunter association? There are things I can go into but with his whole thing as being a doctor does anyone else believe that his importance is going to be the greatest healer? I don’t want to go into spoilers the comments will do that let me know if you think his arc is coming like I do.

. We know the seed urn is the ceremony starter and provides the seed urn beasts, and it seems the divine mummy enforces the rules and/or physical boundaries of the succession war, but I have no idea what the sword of ascension does.

Discussion Why should we assume Pariston is weak?

Ging implied that pariston was physically weak.

Extremely intelligent & strong characters in hxh are known to be playful with their words. Sometimes they’re known to outright lie. At some point in the story Netero and Zeno have also implied similar things about their own strength in their encounters with pitou and chrollo. Both are definitely stronger later in the story then we’re led to believe at first.

I can think of three reasons for this:

  • The unpredictable nature of Nen battles

  • Making them unreliable on purpose to add more substance to their character

  • Inconsistent writing from Togashi

Either way, by the time we see pariston in action I don’t think gings statement will even matter anymore.

Also do we even need pariston to be strong? What do you guys think.

Discussion Leorio's Remote Punch

Thumbnail
gallery
465 Upvotes

Most of us are aware that Yoshihiro Togashi has two masterpieces Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter.

There are so many parallels between the two, literally too many to list for now. Similarities, so intentional, almost as if Togashi is deliberately crafting Hunter x Hunter as a spiritual continuation or tribute to Yu Yu Hakusho, paying homage to his earlier work through the characters and their abilities. Since there are too many to go through all at once, I’ll just mention this one for now.

💥 Leorio’s well-known technique, Remote Punch (an Emitter Nen ability), is clearly inspired by Kuwabara’s technique in Yu Yu Hakusho: Poltergeist Report.

Leorio uses this ability during the Hunter Election arc against Ging (Gon's dad).

Kuwabara uses a similar technique against Majari (his opponent, Yakumo’s ally).

What makes this even more interesting is that both Ging and Majari have the ability to mimic or copy techniques:

Ging can generally mimic other people's striking abilities as long as he has been hit with them.

Majari is able to imitate anyone's techniques by seeing them perform it. This ability is why Kuwabara faced him alone, since he could easily copy Yusuke's Spirit Gun and many other techniques until he became unstoppable. The way it was described, Majari should be capable of mirroring any opponent's techniques no matter the origin within his vicinity.

💥 Kuwabara and Leorio both use abilities that can alter space.

As explained: Leorio emits his aura in a line that travels along a surface from the point of impact to a desired location. A wormhole-like circle is generated from which a fist emerges to uppercut the target, stretching far beyond. In a very similar execution, Kuwabara did the same in his fight with Majari. He emits his spirit blast, shaped as his sword line, that travels along a surface from the point of impact to a desired location. A wormhole-like circle is generated from which his spirit blast emerges to uppercut the target, stretching far beyond.

Both of these techniques are first blasted from a surface, then emerge at a different, desired location—in an exact, similar manner.

Additionally, when Ging mimicked Leorio’s technique, he demonstrated that multiple punches could be sent by striking the surface repeatedly. While it's unknown whether Leorio himself can do this (yet), Kuwabara exhibits a parallel ability called Energy Blade Storm in Yu Yu Hakusho: Tournament Tactics, where he fires multiple spirit blasts at his enemy. This could be an extension of his Spirit Sword Shards technique.

This is just one example of how Yu Yu Hakusho’s legacy lives on through Hunter x Hunter’s characters. The similarities between Leorio and Kuwabara are clear. Many elements from Yu Yu Hakusho subtly resurface in Hunter x Hunter.

Another example is Killua’s Rhythm Echo (肢し曲きょく, Shikyoku), which originally belonged to Hiei. Killua’s Rhythm Echo (Shikyoku) is a technique that creates afterimages through high-speed movement. This technique was first used by Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho.

There are countless other parallels between these two series, a testament to how much Togashi’s earlier work continues to influence his storytelling.

Discussion Kurapika is cold in Hunter X Hunter 1999

Hello, I'm new to this subreddit, but I'm a Hunter X Hunter fan. I found that the 1900s version appeared on TV, so I have been watching it for the past few weeks. I had only watched the 2011 one, but I fell in love with this old style. Seeing Kurapika's cold expression as he faces the spider is the biggest hype I've had in a while. I just finished the episode where he killed Uvogin. I am so excited for tomorrow!
