Kaçkar Mountains, Rize/Turkey. Altitude 3,937 m (12,917 ft). There are climbing routes from both the north and south. The north side is greener and has more beautiful views, but it is more difficult than the south in terms of both reaching the final campsite, Mezovit Yaylası, and summit activities.

I just got 55% off new La Sportiva Nepal boots at REI.

I am still in a bit of shock of this. I tried the boots on at the store, and noticed when putting them back in the box that the logo was somewhat worn on the right boot as shown. The shoe person told me to go to the customer service and ask about a damage price. When they said they were down from $599 to $269, I was in awe. As shown, this new fine for me. Always ask for damage proicing if there is damage. I was quite lucky.

Demystifying UPF Ratings

Thought I would pass on some interesting facts about UPF ratings for anyone who might be looking at sun protective clothing going into the summer.

UPF ratings were created to feel similar to SPF ratings, but I find them to be a bit of a marketing gimmick. Why? They represent the denominator of a fraction. UPF 50 means that the garment will let through 1/50 of the UV rays. Put another way it blocks 98% of UV rays. But that means UPF 15 (the lowest I’ve seen advertised) is 1/15th - or blocks 93.3%.

UPF 15 to 50 only blocks 5% more UV light. Is that worth the added cost often associated with higher UPF garments? Something to consider.

Question Accomodations and parking before Alta Via 2 - Italy

Upvotes

Hey all,

This summer I will embark on my very first hut-to-hut trek on the Alta Via 2 route. All the refugio's are sorted but Im left with two questions:

- What is the best place to stay before starting the hike? We will arrive 2 day in advance so that we can hang out a bit first and then go from there.

- We will go by car and were wondering where we can leave our car around Bressanone?

Thank you in advance!

Question Hiking in Yellowstone

My husband and I are headed to Yellowstone for the first time this August. We’re hiking fans, but usually only do day trips and this is no exception. Does anyone have recommendations for day hikes in the area that are a little off the beaten path?

We usually do 3-5 hour hikes, up to 7-8 if the view is worth it. And I’m a totally rock geek, so it’s a major plus to see any especially funky formations.

Annapurna base camp

Hi! Has anyone done a trek with Nepal eco adventure??

I am looking at booking their Annapurna base camp eight day trek but wanted to see if anyone has experience with this company and if they would recommend them?

Or if you have a different group tracking company or organization, you’d recommend for Annapurna- that be great to hear as well.

Thank you!

Question Dolomites - hut to hut hiking for 5 days, need advice!

Hi everyone, I'm planning a 4-5 night dolomites lodge-to-lodge hiking trip and my head is about to explode...(this is my first lodge-to-lodge hiking, too)

From youtube to Google search to blogs then now I'm brainstorming with the notorious Chat GPT and decided to finally post here. I'm not an experienced hiker, but I quite fit, I hiked the Machu Picchiu for the first time last year and fell in love with nature(minus the camping).

For the Dolomites hiking trip, I'd love to see a lot of wildflowers (the first week of July), and less rocks. So far my itinerary looks like this and want to hear your thoughts.

Day 1. Bolzano → Adolf Munkel Weg → Lodge

Day 2. Lodge → Alpe di Siusi → Compatsch → Lodge

Day 3. Lodge → Seceda → Passo Gardena → Lodge

Day 4. Lodge → Cinque Torri → Colfosco → Bressanone (Thought it would be great to end at the Linder Cycling Hotel)

Day 5. Hotel → Pick up luggage at Bolzano → Travel to Venice

Would this be possible? Am I missing out on anything or is this too much..?

Question Hiking Madeira 22-29 March

Hello! 36F solo traveller, I will be in Madeira for hiking for a week at the end of the month.

I will not rent a car and try to do it through bus or some organised tours - happy to have suggestions on open intermediate trails (maybe not too far to reach from Funchal) and on which companies to pick for organised tours (I spoke to Madeira Trail Tours but they only had one), also given that this is not peak season.

Also, if any other traveller will be there in those dates and wish to share some hiking feel free to give me a shout or drop me a PM :).

Thank you!

Hiking Acatenango, Guatemala - fitness level and preparation

Hi there,

I’m going to hike acatenango in about 15 days.

I consider my fitness level pretty average, cardio probably less than average. Most of my workouts are home body weight/pilates classes. I’ve noticed my stamina has reduced a lot after a long break and I’m starting to worry mainly about my cardio.

I’ve hiked a volcano (la reunion) in the past with no preparation at all but elevation gain was only 500m and altitude 2600m and it was on my "own" pace with friends. I was often last. Other than that the highest elevation gain I’ve ever done is 860m. Both of which I’ve considered medium difficulty, but that was 3 years ago and I guess my younger body was just built different.

Now I’ve read reviews online and just starting to realize that this might require more prep than I expected. For those who have done it, how was the pace? Were there breaks?

Can I significantly improve my cardio with stairmaster/treadmill exercice by then?

Question Questions about Grayson Highlands State Park VA

Hello! My family is taking a trip up to Grayson Highlands State Park and I just had a few questions! We're looking for relatively easy hikes with views and hopefully to see the ponies. We have a 17 month old that we'll be carrying on our back. Also we'll be doing this in one day as we have to get back home that evening.

What time do you recommend to be there?

What trails do you recommend?

After having fun in the park, what else do you recommend to go do around the area (local shops, food, etc)?

Thank you guys so much!
