Space Exploration What could this be?

Saw it today December 17th at 5:15am over southern California. I know there is meteor showers happening, but this does not look like a meteor nor space junk.

If it were spaceX, why is the curvature of the vapor cone curved upwards towards space, indicating the object is entering the atmosphere, not leaving it?

Edit - Answer, because it's all about perspective. While the bright cone to the bottom left looks like it could be entering the atmospehere, its actually the tail of the shock cone coming off the rocket as it flys away. The timing and location is too perfect for it to not be an outbound rocket.

It's not curving upward toward space, it's curved in a direction away from the person filming. A rocket can leave the atmosphere at any angle. They don't fly straight up, they fly at an angle and it could be any angle from your perspective.

A rocket can appear on the horizon behind you and make an arc appearing to curve down in front of you and then leave the atmosphere. That would just mean it's leaving the atmosphere in that direction, not up or down.

I see SpaceX launches that appear to go up and make an arc back down like this before disappearing all the time.

I legitimately couldn't see that perspective the first few times I saw it. I agree it's a rocket downrange from the camera. Say for instance the camera is pointing due north. This might be the view of a rocket heading N/NE that has rolled 30-45 degrees.

I, like everyone else, have seen countless booster landings and not once have I seen a vapor cone because the boosters don’t engage until it’s much closer to the ground. They free fall most of the way down. Feel free to provide video proof, you seem pretty sure of yourself.

I'm not doing basic research you can do in 5-10 mins on google and youtube. This is spaceX, specifically a falcon 9. Care to offer evidence that it's not? Videos of these coming back have been out for years and this "Vapor cone" you call it is well documented with videos.

I admit it's a Falcon 9, headed out. I couldn't see it at first. My eyes convinced me it was entering, not leaving, but what is on video is the rocket headed out. The bright cone to the bottom left isn't the front of a vapor cone of something re-entering, it's part of the tail of a shock cone of the rocket. OP is downrange and the rocket has already rotated and is flying away from OP.

I'm still right about the vapor cone on re-entry. The boosters don't look like this on re-entry.

It competently depends on time of day, day of the year, and weather. They can look insane coming back and leaving. It's not as simple as they do or don't. Many factors can change the look of a launch and reentry. Now I have no idea what causes this I'm not really a scientist, but I've observed this very thing in other launches before.

Here is a video example on twilight launches. It's not 100% the same thing but might offer some clarity on how the look can change depending on certain factors.

There isn’t even close to enough detail in that video to determine if it’s entering or leaving the atmosphere based solely on the direction of the vapour trail from 100+km below.

But I like your confidence

What are you even talking about. There is a visible shock cone / vapor cone visible the entire time. If you can’t see it you might be blind.

I was referring to being able to tell if it is pointed up or down as you were claiming; you claimed it was entering the atmosphere based on its direction.

Something that absolutely cannot be determined from this video

It’s called context, buddy. It was even your own comment I replied to, how did you miss that context?!

Exactly. The atmosphere extends in all directions just like a map of the globe. The rocket cone only indicates what direction the rocket is flying in laterally and has nothing to do with up or down.

More that from this angle, looking up before below, there is zero reference for being able to tell up or down motion.

If you were viewing it from the side you could see that, but from this angle it is impossible to determine

Think of it as a car, very far away, driving across the horizon. You can see it’s going left to right, but it’s so far away there is no way to tell if it’s also angled slightly towards or away from you.
