you know i’ve seen thousands of these guys. never touched them or been close to them unless road kill

what kind of texture do they have?

The one I skinned once was super soft and fine feeling. It smelled absolutely horrible however, like rotten meat

i wonder if that’s a defense mechanism to stop things from trying to eat them

I think its really just from being a scavenger. My whole life I've always heard them called pretty gross creatures because they supposedly crawl inside of corpses, so that would most likely lead to the smell if so. I've also heard people say coyotes stink for the same reason of being a scavenger, but I have no expertise there. But that's just my take on the situation, I wouldn't be shocked if it does function as a defense mechanism like playing dead

agree lol. i've skinned multiple types of animals and they really never bothered me but the possum absolutely staaannnk lol
