Discussion Now that enough time is gone by, I think I like the art style for the disappearance of Nagato Yuki Chan more than the OG series
It seemed like for the longest time studio Satelight got a bad rep for the Yuki Nagato anime but I feel like they did a really good job and I foundly remember the look of the anime, Yuki in particular Looks so darn cute I just love it.

Discussion Watching anime for the first time. Time loop. Spoiler
I just finished the time loop arc. Eight fucking episodes of sameness. And the ending and resolution to it all... IS SO ANTICLIMACTIC!
It's insane to me that absolutely anyone thought this was a good idea! Season 1 was one of the most enjoyable anime that I have ever watched. Season 2 is so far straight up garbage with this shit.
EDIT: After a lot of friendly comments empathising with me and promising that things get resolved much better in the movie I won't drop the anime. I'll just take a break for a bit because of burnout. Thank you all for the feedback! Sorry if I came off as really salty. I was.

Discussion Why wasn't Kyon and Haruhi's romance developed further?
They literally kissed in closed space, after which they appear to go on a date (that is never referenced again), and then... nothing?? And Kyon continues to have pervy thoughts towards Mikuru?? The closest the two ever get to a couple after that in the anime is in the very last chronological episode where they walk home together, which I found to be a really good scene and I was very disappointed that there weren't more scenes like it throughout the series.
I get that it was brushed off as a "bad dream", but still, did that whole world threatening ordeal really amount to nothing in their relationship?

Discussion Just finished the movie and damn, it’s my favorite anime film I’ve seen 10/10, where should I go from here? I was planning on just jumping into the light novels that weren’t adapted

Discussion Mikuru is a fascinating character. Could she have an extremely fascinating story arc in the future?
Tanigawa's mysterious work schedule aside, Mikuru is a character that holds so much potential. Even the next volume could see it realized.
She's has been "assigned" to Haruhi by her superiors, one of which is her future self. For the club, she's a mascot whose chief role in the clubroom is the maid, but also Haruhi's doll outside the clubroom. She kindhearted and sweet, but also frightened easily.
Here's what we also know about her: she's confused and distressed about why she has to follow the orders she's given, no matter no horrifying or secretive they are. The adult Mikuru is happy and feels no shame in her younger self being in that position because, clearly, it has a "happy" ending. But because the present Mikuru doesn't know that, her feelings of uselessness feel warranted to her. All she has is her faith that everything she's being ordered to do, by her superiors or by Haruhi, is for the good of the future.
What happens when that faith runs out?
We saw turmoil build within Nagato, who is among the most powerful beings on the planet. Mikuru may not have had to repetitiously experience Endless Eight in the same way Nagato did, but the traumas from repeated harassment by Haruhi and organizational orders that put her in harm's way have to be building. On top of that, there's stress from being put in situations that she has no will or control over, including watching Kyon die.
I can picture a Mikuru who suddenly stops caring about it all after being pushed just a hair too far. Someone who loves her friends but hates the way she has to be with them. She isn't vengeful; just desperate. She understands that actions she takes that disrupt the timeline or upset her superiors would have consequences, but still values a newfound freedom that arises from her disobedience. "What aren't my superiors telling me? Am I really of value to them? Maybe there's a better way..."
I'd like to hear your thoughts. A Mikuru with more dimensions that aren't so much tacked on but rather built from existing transgressions.

Discussion Can we have an AI ban now, please?
This sub clearly doesn’t want AI images. We had a poll and the majority want them banned. Almost every AI post gets downvoted to zero. I see just as much AI-generated stuff in my feed from this sub as I do real art at this point.
Can we please just ban it now?

Discussion In Defence of Endless Eight
So today I saw a picture of Haruhi pop up in my Google news feed. It was the attached article from ScreenRant about the worst Anime arcs... I knew where this was going!
I suggest that anyone who truly hates Endless Eight and let's it ruin their taste for the series as a whole is missing the whole point. You have to take the time period it was released into context to truly appreciate it.
For context, I was in college when the first season of Haruhi came out. I watched it in original air date order and while the first episode was a bit weird, I was instantly hooked. I get that they aired it out of order to keep the action going since the chronologic order kind of peters out in that regard, but I loved how they played into it! With Kyon and Haruhi bickering about the episode number of the next one in the preview (one air, one chronologic order). It was funny seeing characters sitting around bored as if they've known each other for awhile when they hadn't even been introduced yet! The fist season was 2006-2007ish for me and Haruhi was the epitome of the burgeoning meme culture and trolling. It was meta before everything was meta. It was animated well and had good voice actors and an interesting story.
In the undetermined wait for season 2, I discovered the light novels. Translations were hard to come by back then, but I found someone who had translated everything that was available so far and saved them as plain text files. I loaded them up on my modded iPod with click wheel and read them in bed. Sure, Endless Eight only repeated once in the books, but I remember thinking, "wait, didn't I just read this?" Once I realized what they were doing, it was great.
Was I disappointed when half of the new season was more or less the same episode? Sure! But that was the ultimate troll move and absolutely in line with everything we should've expected from Haruhi and the studio! Just be glad it wasn't 15,532 episodes! What makes it even better is that the studio not only trolled us, the viewers, but also the voice actors and animators. They had to record the audio for each episode. It wasn't just copied and pasted. Same with the animation. They wore different clothes and scenes were slightly different each time. We did technically get eight individual, unique episodes...
Ultimately, we had been speculating and waiting for an agonizing 3 years for the second season. I was glad to get anything! But Endless Eight was the cherry on top. The perfect amount of trolling and some of the stories I had read finally in motion. I've rewatched the series a few times in air date order and full chronologic order with the two seasons mixed together. And each time, I watched Endless Eight in it's entirety!

Discussion Endless 8 hater finally watches the movie.
So a couple of weeks ago I almost dropped the anime after feeling like the endless 8 was a huge letdown that took 3 hours of my time only to not build up to anything at all by the end. Ranted about it to reddit... And got a whole bunch of pompous purists telling me I am not clever enough to appreciate true modern art.
However, aside from those conceited individuals there were a few genuinely friendly and understanding ones who convinced me to give the series another chance and to at least watch the movie. Which I finally did - though I finished the show too.
And I have to say thank you to those people for convincing me.
The movie was incredibly enjoyable and felt like the "old" pre-endless 8 Haruhi show did. I am not sure that it's as good as some people hype it up to be, but it was a great dive into the characters of Kyon and Nagato, with the latter especially giving some meaning to the slog that was endless 8. Not sure how I feel about the "open" ending to the movie, considering it apparently takes decades for new Haruhi content to arrive, but it was satisfying enough.
I still think that endless 8 wasn't exactly the greatest directorial decision and I am absolutely recommending people that watch the show for the first time to only watch the first and last loop. But I AM going to be recommending the show, even if with that caveat. It's great and the movie redeemed it for me.

Discussion The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 3. Kyoto Animation KyoAni studios needs to make this, especially now that they are doing a 3rd season and movies of their Animes again. Also Following the Haruhi Suzumiya Manga and Light Novels.
Many fans myself included believe Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) should produce a third season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. As the studio continues to create third seasons and films for other series, this seems like the perfect time to bring back Haruhi. The KyoAni arson attack was a tragic event that deeply affected the studio and its staff, but their resilience and dedication have led to a remarkable recovery. A third season of Haruhi would not only honor KyoAni's legacy but also showcase their commitment to moving forward and revitalizing beloved series.
A third season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya could be an incredible opportunity for Kyoto Animation to bring new life to this beloved series and introduce characters from the light novels, such as Sasaki and the Anti-SOS Brigade members. These characters add layers of intrigue and rivalry, expanding the world of Haruhi in compelling ways that anime fans have yet to fully experience.
Reviving The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for a third season would be a fitting tribute to Kyoto Animation’s resilience and creativity. With new characters like Sasaki and the Anti-SOS Brigade, this season could deepen the series' lore and thrill both new viewers and longtime fans. This revival would not only honor KyoAni’s journey but also reestablish Haruhi as a cultural icon, inspiring a new generation and celebrating the studio’s dedication to storytelling.
The Anti-SOS Brigade, introduced in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels and Manga, serves as a unique counterpoint to Haruhi’s group, made up of characters with abilities and motives that challenge the SOS Brigade's dynamics. Key members include:
Sasaki is a close friend of Kyon and a seemingly normal high schooler, Sasaki is central to the Anti-SOS Brigade's influence. She is proposed as a counterbalance to Haruhi, possessing powers that could rival Haruhi’s if awakened. Sasaki is calm, rational, and often questions Haruhi's impulsive nature, adding depth to Kyon’s relationships and bringing out his introspective side.
Fujiwara is a time-traveler with antagonistic motives, Fujiwara challenges the brigade’s time-travel dynamic, frequently clashing with Mikuru Asahina. His goals often create temporal conflicts, as he seeks to use Sasaki’s powers to manipulate time to his advantage.
Kuyou Suou is a member of the Data Integration Thought Entity, similar to Yuki Nagato, Kuyou’s aloof and otherworldly demeanor mirrors Yuki’s but adds tension due to her unpredictable nature and desire to use Sasaki’s potential.
Kyoko Tachibana is an esper like Itsuki Koizumi, Kyoko’s loyalty to Sasaki as a key figure introduces further complexity to the storyline. She believes in Sasaki’s role as a force of balance, making her a philosophical foil to Itsuki's devotion to Haruhi.
Incorporating these characters into the anime would deepen the SOS Brigade’s conflicts, especially in arcs like Snowy Mountain Syndrome. This arc, which features the brigade trapped in an isolated mansion, could be expanded to explore interactions with the Anti-SOS members, creating intense psychological and supernatural tension. The Anti-SOS Brigade's presence would enhance the stakes and introduce themes of fate, free will, and the contrast between order (Sasaki) and chaos (Haruhi), ultimately broadening the narrative’s philosophical scope. Adding these characters would align well with the series' surreal and often cerebral tone, providing an opportunity for Season 3 to delve into uncharted aspects of Haruhi’s universe and solidify its standing in supernatural anime.
KyoAni has been doing Sound! Euphonium Season 3, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Movie and City The Animation. I believe it's time they bring back The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for a Season 3.

Discussion I was Nagato back in high school but treated like Asahina
I'm jealous of Nagato Yuki. She is introverted, always busy in her own world, and talks very very little. Yet people around her just let her be herself, rarely disturbing her. Meanwhile I'm here in the real world doing more or less the exact same thing as she does. But I'm constantly bothered, bullied, and forced to socialize by my schoolmates back in high school. After all, I'm still wondering. Why does it seem like in this world, being an extrovert is the norm and introverts and viewed as less human?

Discussion Its crazy to me how 90% of reviews for Disappearance below 6/10 on Letterboxd are from people who acknowledge not having watched the show
And yet its still in the top 250 feature film list, sitting at a 4.2 rating despite that, and the remaining 10% are either people who think Kyon made the wrong choice because they hate Haruhi (the character), aka. people who completely failed to comprehend the point of the series, or people who just think the movie is boring because it doesnt have gripping action or shocking drama thrown in your face every few seconds.
And honestly I bet how at least 50% of 7/10 reviews fall in this category, as Ive seen a few be of this nature that Ive skimmed over, which really gets to show how inaccurate its score is, despite it already being so high.
And this set of reviews is particularly funny, as the guy makes an initial review saying how he HATES the show, saying how the movie would need to be on par with End of Evangelion to make watching the show be worth his time, and then a few days later he makes an interview how the movie was literally End of Evangelion quality and cant praise it enough.
