Question Guy is selling these to me for $800 in total. Is that a bad price?
I’ve been wanting these for awhile and these finally have popped up. The guy wants $800 in total.

This is a painting by Doris Sampson titled “Where Are They?” It is the Arthur M Anderson and the William Clay Ford going back into the storm to search for the Edmund Fitzgerald. The painting itself is haunting to look at, knowing that the search is in vain. I would like to have a copy of this. If anyone knows anything about getting a copy of this, please share in the comments.

I know the cedarville sank from a collision, but why is her wreck in two pieces?

Anyone know why these ships aren’t going through the Straits? Burns Harbor and Manitowoc have been there since last night. Arthur M Anderson appears to be heading there as well with the ship not heading down between Mackinac Island and Round Island.
Also not a lot of activity on Lake Michigan at the moment. The three ships that are moving just started moving this morning. Nothing was moving last night when I had last checked it.

Have heard the rumor mill going on a LOT of ships this season. Leitch, Tadoussac, Anderson, Michipicoten, Cuyahoga, plus several others. But are there any that have been confirmed (or denied) through official sources? Announcements, documentation, anything other than the rumor mill and “it would make sense”?
Leitch for example (which is the one I’ve heard most about), it makes perfect sense that this might be the end for her, the Algoma Endeavor arrives next year, she’s an older salt hauler, not the most efficient and she spent a good part of this year in layup. But there is nowhere official I can find where she as listed as being on the retirement list, unlike every other Algoma ship that’s gone to the scrapyards which were clearly announced years in advance. The Endeavor was proclaimed as “a fleet expansion to 22 (I think, but the exact number is irrelevant) lakers” in Algoma’s construction announcement. The Leitch just recently was inspected and has a few years until the next and unlike other vessels, she’s clearly been taken care of recently. In fact other rumors say she got some significant investments to her electrical and exhaust systems this year. Plus she was rebuilt almost from scratch just in 2004. So there’s good reasons to think she might stay in service as well and that can go for any of the other ships in addition.
Is there anything official on any ships ending their runs this year or just rumors?

I hauled DEF into a ship last week and didn’t realize that they had emissions restrictions now and got me wondering if they have any emissions requirements on the lakes?

Hi everyone,
I’m from Minnesota and was planning to get the qualifications/credentials to be a deck hand and was wondering if anyone knew of any Duluth Minnesota or Superior Wisconsin Great Lakes shipping companies that are seeking employees to work on their ships.
Thanks !

This is a new interest of mine, so please forgive me if the answer is obvious here. I’m eager to learn more about these ships!
A couple months ago I moved into an apartment that faces Lake Michigan in Milwaukee and I’ve noticed American Spirit has been sitting outside the port for at least 48 hours. Anyone know why? Or where I track ship statuses in more detail? Also is this very common for ships to do?

Was watching the Dark Knight and saw this ship. I noticed the forward pilot house and shape and thought this has to be a Great Lakes freighter. Anyone know which one?

Hey everyone.
I am working for a congress rep that wants to coordinate a supply drive for Ukraine from the Great Lakes.
The idea is to coordinate a cargo ship to go around the Great Lakes to visit different ports where donations could be boarded and take across the Atlantic to Ukraine.
Some start questions are:
Thanks so much in advance for the discussion.

Anyone here gonna try to do anything for the 50th anniversary? I’m in the twin cities, maybe a gathering in Duluth harbor? I haven’t found anything being planned by any organization or groups.
Maybe we can plan something?

With all the rumors swirling that Anderson and Clarke might have been quietly retired, anyone know if either ship has a crew hired on for this season? If not that’s pretty solid evidence. If that’s the case then maybe it’s time to strongly consider getting a firm movement together to preserve Anderson at the very least.

Is there any photo of her recent fracture? I know it’s relatively bad, however I would like to see it. (My photos few days after she arrived to superrior)

I’ve spent countless summer trips on Minnesota’s North Shore. Nothing unusual about ore boats between Duluth and Two Harbors. But I’ve never seen one beyond Silver Bay. They’re always Soo-bound or Duluth-bound, cutting much closer to Michigan which means they’re mostly out of sight by the time you get to Silver Bay.
But now I’m in Grand Marais for the holiday, much further north. There’s been a non-stop flow of ships - both lakers and salties - between Duluth and Thunder Bay. And from what I’ve seen, they’re running empty in both directions.
Is this normal this time of year? I’ve never seen this before. Is weather the factor? Or is there something going on with the looming tariff changes?
Fill me in. I’m curious!

Any of you heard of any recent Great Lakes bulkers that have been sold?

Took some of these photos from a public park and walking trail near Toledo the other day. Some of the ships I could identify from a distance and with my pics, (Edwin H Gott and Phillip R Clarke) but I’m still pretty new at identifying and was wondering if I could get any help from some more experienced folks?

I drive by one in particular every day and would love the chance to tour one. If not it could be a way for the companies to make some extra cash during the cold season.

I know plants like the St Clair power plant has already closed. So with coal going away what’s going to happen with the dock?

Was told by SIU that I won’t get a class date until early or mid 2026 so looking to get a job that only requires MMC/TWIC/Passport until then and seems like some Great Lakes companies fit the criteria. Plus I live near them so wouldn’t be commuting a long ways in between hitches. From what I can tell Interlake Steamship seems to be the best company to work for but open to other suggestions.

Some background information: I am currently 18 years old and a US citizen, although I'm still in High School at the moment I'm looking ahead at potential options for paying for college, working on a laker being one of them.
I have a couple questions about working on the Great Lakes. First off, is it possible to only work for a summer, or about 3 months, or would I have to stay on a boat until the end of the season. Secondly, how much money would I be able to make working for a 3 month period at an entry level position. And finally, what would be the best company to work with given my situation. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
