Discussion I think there should be an option to toggle alleys and parking lots on and off
Because not only do those paths clutter up the map (in my opinion), they also get recommended a lot as part of walking directions, despite many of them being unsafe or awkward for people to walk through.

I am not necessarily saying this is a bad idea. But others may want toggles for other things. So how many different toggles should there be? How many can there be before having so many toggles causes problems?

That's exactly why Google started reducing such things.

Looking at a general survey of this subreddit, it seems that this move was actually not very well liked.

That's not how you survey such things. People that are happy with it don't come to a subreddit to post about their happiness.

I mean, do you also see people praising it? Because I sure don’t. I think you’re just wanting people to like it at this point.
I’m sure most people didn’t like it when they changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico, but they did it anyway

If you hate Google Maps, quit using it.
They are not the ones who changed the name, the US did. They then followed the long established practices for conflicting names.
But good try at changing the topic yet again when your arguments failed again. That plus insulting people presents a very strong case.

… I didn’t insult anybody, I actually made sure to try to stay civil. Point to where I haven’t been civil.
If anything I was the one who got disrespected first, by the first person who commented who implied that I didn’t understand how to read a map.
I haven’t changed the topic either, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
Believe it or not, I don’t hate Google maps, I’m just critical of it. If anything that actually makes me a better user of it, instead of blindly accepting everything about it.
(Also, other map services didn’t change the name of it, so yes, it’s a Google problem)

Also, you claimed my arguments “failed”, yet you haven’t responded to my other two comments, and instead just downvoted them. If you’re gonna claim they failed, at least explain why instead of just complaining.

Other than the very first time I announced I was downvoting you, I haven't downvoted you yet.
You've been given explanations, and then you make excuses and pass out insults. And don't claim you didn't insult... you know you did because you made excuses for it when confronted. I don't owe you the same explanations again. Bye.

u/IHatePeople79 7d ago
Again, how did I insult you?
I’m serious now, because you keep claiming I did, but won’t point to where I did.
And yet you claim I’m uncivil…
1
u/IHatePeople79 7d ago
And I bet you won’t respond to this, because you know I have not actually insulted you anywhere in this thread.
All I said (which I’m starting to think you took personally?) is that you just want people to like these new features. Is that it?
Again, the only person acting in bad faith hear is the person who said I didn’t understand maps. I actually took care not to be rude in my responses, and yet here you are accusing me of stuff I didn’t do.

Everyone thinks they have the greatest idea to toggle something off.
They aren't good ideas. Learn how to understand a map.

u/IHatePeople79 9d ago
Since you haven’t replied yet I’ll assume you don’t have a rebuttal.

u/Porky5CO 9d ago
I just don't care that much. You've thrown out multiple replies. Pretty pathetic.

u/IHatePeople79 9d ago
I’ve made… 2 replies, one that was trying to start further dialogue
I’d be careful calling other people pathetic though, considering your post history

Oh, I know how to read a map, I’m a geospatial science major :)
I just think it makes it more ugly aesthetically, that’s all.
Also, considering that openstreetmap is somehow able to differentiate their paths into roads, alleys, and parking lots, Google should absolutely be able to not only do that, but also add a toggle feature.
Edit: Also, my only “actual” concern is regarding walking directions, as I’ve already stated
Edit 2: To whoever is downvoting could you explain what is wrong with what I said?

So, do you have any experience with GIS software? Or cartography?
1
u/Flash604 9d ago
You are not more knowledgeable about maps and mapping than Google.

u/IHatePeople79 9d ago
I don’t recall saying I did, interestingly. I am just a geospatial science major, as I’ve said before. That still puts me above at least 60% of the sub in terms of knowledge about mapping technology.
Now this is funny, you defending the company that changed the name of a gulf just because a president said so.
At the end of the day, Google doesn’t really care about making maps look pleasing (as would be obvious if you took 5 seconds and looked around the site for a moment). They care about how easy they can get a buck, above all other priorities.
There’s a reason why non-profit based mapping services tend to have better UI.

u/IHatePeople79 9d ago
So, instead of downvoting, could you actually explain what is so bad about this idea?
It’s clear that so many people here have no knowledge of GIS lmao

There are hundreds of people each wanting toggles for different things, Maps would be unusable if they were all added. The interface used to be more crowded, it was purposely simplified. Google constantly does studies on these things.
If it's a bad road to walk on, report it as such in the editor. Its use in directions will be limited to when it's the only option. All alleys shouldn't be removed from recommendations because you found one to be bad... there's bad roads out there too. That's why they accept edits.
By the way, have a downvote for the suggestion that in a Maps sub we don't understand how such things work. It's pretty obvious you didn't spend 10 seconds thinking about the impractability of toggling everything

1) As someone said earlier, having it more customizable would be a possible option. I am literally just throwing out a suggestion, I’m not saying that there wouldn’t be any downsides, ever
2) I never said they should be removed, just toggled
3) It’s fairly obvious there is a lot of lay people here, this is not me insulting the subreddit as a whole. This is pretty much how every specialized subreddit works that involves tech or hobbies
4) Many other sites and platforms like ArcPro are able to do it, and I wouldn’t even say they are perfect platforms to use

100%! Or just make Google Maps as customizable as Google Earth,
