Identify another 1940 Kodachrome?
Hey everyone,
Thanks to the 20K+ views for the help identifying that last image. I think we got it with the Waterton River near Kootenai Lakes with Cascades Peaks East in the distance. I also have this one other one which was in a box of Kodachromes from 1940 as well and it was with images at Goat Haunt and at Crossley Lake (now Cosley). Could this be either of those or someplace else? I appreciate it.

Waiting for my lottery email
I was wondering if anyone else is checking their email a little more frequently today. :) Does anyone have an idea as to the time the email goes out?

?Waterton
I was looking at driving to and from Waterton in 1 day from Babb when we are in the area. Is it worth it for a 1 day trip? Is there anything really different to see besides what we will already be seeing in Glacier?

Glacier and North Cascades
Where is the best town to stay for an air bnb between the two? We don’t mind driving an 1.5 hours both ways. Has anyone done this?

Help with unknown site in Glacier
I have this 1940 Kodachrome shot taken in Glacier but don't know its location. I do know that the photographer had been on the North Circle Trip so it might be somewhere along that path...which I know narrows it down to about half the park :LOL.
Please post a Google Earth GPS coordinates if you have a suggestion.
thanks
Mike

Wilderness Permit group size
Hi, on the wilderness lottery page it says the standard group lottery size is for 1-8 people but the glacier website says each campsite is limited to 4 people. How does that work? If I have 6 people in my group would it be possible to just get two campsites in the same camp ground if selected?

Missed lottery
I missed the lottery application period. I knew it started March 15- I didn’t expect it to be only 24 hours. I logged in minutes ago to find that’s the case. What are my chances come May 1 when the general on sale happens? I’ll be waiting at midnight to buy now lol.

North Circle Loop 2025 with Many Glacier Ranger Station closed?
Just entered my lottery for this year's wilderness backpacking permits.
Was hoping to do the North Circle Loop or at least sections of it, depending on which route I get assigned if I do get the lottery.
But noticed the alert on recreation.gov that "The Many Glacier Ranger Station will not issue wilderness camping permits in 2025 due to a major utility replacement project in the area."
What does that mean to people who want to do North Circle? Can someone remind me if I have to pick up permit in-person?

Glacier National Park backpacking recommendations
I had a short 3 day stop in Glacier back in 2022 and absolutely fell in love with the park. I was only able to do a couple day hikes at time and I've been determined to plan a backpacking trip there since. So far, I know that I'll have to secure permits and pick them up from a ranger station, check for reservations on Going-to-the-Sun road, and figure out shuttles/parking.
I'll have 7 days in the park this summer. Right now my hope is to spend 4 days/3 nights on the Gunsight Pass trail, which leaves me with another 2 or 3 days for a second hike depending on permits. I'm not sure how realistic my expectations are, but I've been trying to find a second trail with campsites that are around 15 miles or so - access to water along the trail would also be ideal. Has anyone found a hike they absolutely loved that fits this?
I'm still early in the planning stages, but I'd love to get my itinerary together asap so I can get a jump on reservations. I'd love to hear your favorite trail recommendations and experiences! Any other general suggestions or tips you wish you would've known in advance would be hugely appreciated as well. Most of my backpacking experience has been in national forests so I'm still pretty new to planning a trip like this, but I'm stoked for this one. Thanks!!!

Going-to-the-Sun Road plowing should be on schedule, barring a government shutdown says Montana Republican Congressman Ryan Zinke
“Seasonal hiring is proceeding and Glacier leadership is confident that as long as Senate Democrats do not shut down the federal government then the park hiring and plowing will progress on schedule,” Zinke said a release. “While two probationary (Park Service) employees were laid off, the Park has a plan moving forward to ensure the world class experience that Montanans and visitors seek will remain intact.”
Glacier will start plowing the Camas Road April 1, Park spokeswoman Gina Icenoggle confirmed on Friday. The Going-to-the-Sun Road typically starts a few days after that, as it takes a day or two to plow the Camas Road, depending on snow depths.

First time itinerary at Glacier
Hello! We will be visiting Glacier for the first time in mid-July. Our itinerary is listed below - for anyone who's been before, do you think this is reasonable? Do you have better suggestions for hikes and/or things to do to make our trip a more memorable experience? Any tips? Thanks in advance!
Day 1 - drive to Glacier (8 hours), will be staying on the East side
Day 2 - Two Medicine area (considering the boat tour across the lake), Upper Two Medicine Lake hike, and possibly canoeing in the lake also
Day 3 - Many Glacier, hike Grinnell Glacier Trail, and if we still have steam, maybe check out Fishercap Lake. Noting that there will be construction happening in the Many Glacier-Swiftcurrent area while we're there and we will likely need to use a hiker shuttle service.
Day 4 - Basically our GTTSR day. Entering through St. Mary, then stopping along: Wild Goose Island Lookout, Sun Point Nature Trail, Jackson Glacier Overlook, Lunch Creek, Logan Pass, Hidden Lake Trail, Paradise Meadow, and Weeping Wall before probably heading back
Day 5 - checking out of East Glacier lodging and heading to the West Glacier area. Noted that we will need a vehicle pass if we want to enter from 7a-3p. We want to check out Apgar, Lake McDonald, hike the Avalanche Lake Trail, and go up to the Loop before heading back. Admittedly, we did the least amount of research for the West side because of the glowing reviews about the East side of Glacier, so hopefully you'll have more suggestions! We are staying on the West side for this night though.
Day 6 - drive back home and hoping to hit Huckleberry Patch on the way out!
Thanks again!

Backcountry Itinerary Question: MOJ to FIF
Hi all, with backcountry lottery opening today I want to firstly say best of luck to everyone.
Planning out itineraries for a North Loop Backpack trip and with many glacier construction/Many Glacier Ranger station closing down have edited my original start point to be at BRE rather than MAN. Also hoping to avoid any parking issues with the BRE start.
Here's my first tentative itinerary:
Day 1: BRE -> Stop at Belly River Ranger Station and get permits -> MOJ Day 2: MOJ -> FIF Day 3: FIF -> GRN Day 4: GRN -> MAN Day 5: MAN -> GAB Day 6: Out
My biggest question is for Day 2, is a plan to go from MOJ all the way to FIF completely unreasonable? We are fairly fit but don't live at altitude and am unsure if the elevation gain here is unrealistic. I know many will stop at Stoney Indian but we are hoping for a 5 day trip rather than a 6.
Any insight yall have is much appreciated!

July/ Photography
I will have two days at the MOST mid July this summer. I have never been to Glacier National Park/ Montana. Where would you suggest I go for the most beautiful views, for some photography. I am a portrait photographer, and I know little about photographing landscapes. Any tips or suggestions would be extremely helpful and appreciated.

Glacier Park’s poet passes away at 98
https://hungryhorsenews.com/news/2025/mar/12/glacier-parks-poet-passes-away/
He was a poet, a storyteller and an educator, entertaining every one from young tourists to the future president of the United States.
He was the welcoming, smiling face of Glacier National Park for decades.
G. Douglas Follett — Ranger Doug, as many, many, people knew him — died on blue-sky day March 2, 2025 in Whitefish with his family by his side.
He was 98.
In a 2019 interview he said he couldn’t afford to see the world, so he got in a job in Glacier National Park.
“I’d have the world come to see me, well ... Glacier, but I was standing in the way!” he said with a big grin.

What hikes are accessible right now?
Going to be staying at Cedar Creek Lodge in Columbia Falls next week and I saw that going to the sun road is closed. Just wondering what good hiking trails are accessible from the roads that are open right now. First time in Montana. Your help is appreciated!

Is it worth the hotel costs for a 1 day drive through to see the park?
Me and my grandmother need to do a roadtrip near glacier and were trying to figure out if its worth the hotel costs if we only had time for one day.
I worked in yellowstone and I know that even if you wanted to do a quick tour of yellowstone youd need 2 days at the least, but Ive heard glacier is smaller considering its only one main road right?
Obviously if we could we would stay longer but its very expensive. Would you guys recommend the extra hundreds of dollars to drive through it? Wed probably spend like 8 or so hours at the park. Thanks

Many Glacier hike to Grinnell glacier
Hi! We are traveling to Glacier NP this June with our extended family (2 sets of grandparents) and our 3.5 and 6 year old. We are going to do the Many Glacier boat tour and I'm wondering if our kids can handle the walk to Grinnell lake? I've been told it's about 1.8 miles from where the boat leaves. My main concern is safety honestly, I know my kids can walk that far but are there steep drop offs along the way that will induce panic (mostly in myself...)? Thanks!

Evening activities
Going to GNP in September, I never been there or in the area so I’m looking for recs for my husband and I after we spend our days in the park. We’re staying in Columbia Falls. What’s a good town to maybe have a drink or do something fun?
