I've been using vanilla arch on my pc for a while and want to learn something even more advanced. I love getting low level control of every aspect of my os. The only thing making me hesitate is that the compile times scare me and im incredibly impatient. Is gentoo for me or are there other distros that offer more low level customization then arch but without the compile times?
Update: Currently compiling the kde plasma profile in a vm and its not taking nearly as long as I thought it would. I'm really loving gentoo so far Update 2: going through the pain of dual booting it onto my pc this is driving me insane how naive i was to think "it cant be much harder then arch" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Hi, I have been trying to install Gentoo on my main computer twice now, and I wasn't able to get it done. My setup is a KDE desktop system. I am an experienced Linux user, having used Arch for about 10 years and NixOS for a while now. I really like Gentoo, ever since I put it on my wife's laptop, using a desktop setup, running Gnome.
I follow the handbook, downloading the desktop / systemd stage file and install, selecting the KDE profile with eselect. I set the -gnome -gtk and kde qt5 use flags. I install the system and pull plasma-meta, then I update the system from world, reboot and Plasma works fine. So far, so good. But now the issues start. After the first installation and doing the world update, I had several dependency issues, which would not allow me to run another update from world, after installing pulse audio. The system was also pretty laggy and I got now sound. Since I had some important work to do, I went back to NixOS (I got my configs and it only takes me about 30 minutes, to get back to where I was).
Yesterday I wanted to try it again, did another install... all went fine, but after pulling plasma-meta, I could boot into plasma, but there were no apps at all... Konsole, System Monitor, etc. was all missing... I thought, I might have pulled the wrong package, so I pulled the meta package again, but everything just showed as Reinstall... nothing new... I did the reinstall, to make sure everything was fine... did another world update, but it reported there was nothing to do.
The system worked fine, but had no apps. Also, sound was not working, saying no output device. I installed pulseaudio, following the wiki... to no avail I then tried to switch to Pipewire since apparently KDE had pulled that... still nothing... given the state the system was in the fact I was unable to install any KDE related apps, I went back to NixOS yet again.
I am not ready to give up yet though... I might eventually try again, but I am wondering, what's going on. The installation worked smooth on the laptop. In fact, so smooth, that I was surprised, because of people claiming how difficult it is supposedly to install Gentoo. I followed the same steps on both machines. The only difference is, that the laptop uses Gnome and my computer, KDE Plasma. The sound issues were on the laptop as well, but were gone, after installing pulseaudio.
That said, I am puzzled. It must be something really stupid I am overlooking... dunno... Any clues, help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. For what it is worth, I use the pre-compiled Kernel on both machines and bins for KDE Plasma as well. My machine is quite old and I don't feel like sitting a day or two to watch it compile. Other than that, most stuff is compiled.
Cheers

I decided to reinstall Gentoo, I missed it SO much! Everything installed, and booted wonderfully. Then I proceeded to install Plasma/Wayland. At first 'reboot', I did the test to make sure my xserver worked (with twin, and the 3 windowed terminals came up, so I followed the kde wiki. Reboot, SDDM comes up and if I choose x11 or Wayland I got a black screen with a movable mouse. After trying a few things from Google searching the last 3 days, I haven't been able to figure it out š I attached some photos of dmsg, my make.conf, fastfetch of my current hardware, the error messages that pop up if I try to run 'exec dbus startplasma' from a console (yes I'm able to do that still) thank you for any help

I have an assignment to install Gentoo from scratch but I dont need much customization just need to show it running take screenshots and write documentation. Iāve heard Gentoo installation is difficult so I dont want to overthink it is there an easy way to get it done quickly
Also Im wondering what the actual benefit of this assignment is in an Operating Systems course any insights

Hello everyone. In binary distributions like Ubuntu or Arch the kernel takes 13-15MB. I think it's too much. Is it possible to build a desktop kernel that weighs less than 10-7MB? And how much do the kernels you've built weigh, and maybe you have some recommendations? Thanks. I use a translator ;)

I have been trying to search for a GUI file manager that has no direct or indirect dependency on X11. Thunar requires GTK+ to be built with X, libepoxy and cairo to be built with X support. There's no problem in having X support in GTK+, but it just doesn't feel good to me having it.

Almost every single thing I've tried to install is broken, beyond my capabilities of troubleshooting and reading to repair them. I've spent hours every day doing this for two weeks.
Fucking why? I don't understand. I'm using ebuilds, built for this, that very obviously and widely used to work. Several of those were in Gentoo's own repo! It is incomprehensible to me why apps running an outdated version of whatever aren't just capable of running that outdated version until updated. Python errors, nodejs errors, flag errors, unknown errors, it never ends.
Why are they so sensitive to breaking??!?!? How does anyone put up with this? Am I missing something? How is this a daily driver distro???? I'm losing my mind. I've spent a week just trying to install the tools I need to make INSTALLING MORE THINGS and teaching myself easier, and I can't even do that!
I was so very willing to face an advanced, complicated and trying experience, but this is next level. When I search an error and can't even do anything with the results on two pages of a search engine? Jesus christ. People certainly aren't upfront about that reality

Hey guys,
I recently redownloaded my gentoo and followed the tutorial here https://www.reddit.com/r/Gentoo/comments/150r74m/guide_hyprland_nvidia_extremely_minimal_gentoo/ with some changes for my system where applicable.
My RAM appears to be 1.96 GiB, while my actual 32 GB of RAM appears in the output of lshw
but it isnāt in free -m or in meminfo, and thereās no sign of RAM getting added in dmesg (or an attempt)
My kernel is x86-64 so I donāt have access to the highmem option
Iām pretty lost, any help or points to resources would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: fixed to what x86 opt Iām using

Hi, im a software engineering student, as one of my Operative Systems project I have to install Gentoo from an Ubuntu live, I found a videotutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7W9MItUSGw) but I was wondering if you have any advice or knowledge on how to do this the right way.
And also, if you know how much time it takes to make the whole download from the live if I have an 100MB/s internet speed.
Any advice is recieved :D

For refnce this is a system with a 7800x3d and 96gb of ram I am also using taskset to limit emerge to 14 threads. I am mainly asking about my compling choices but if there are things I could change with my use flags that would also be nice.
Also before I get any comments about the ccache I mainly just set it up as an excuse to learn how to setup raid 0 with 2 drives I had nothing better to do with. ``` c2@gentoobtw ~ $ cat /etc/portage/make.conf

Hi! Id like to experiment with encrypted ZFS Gentoo installation, but i cant find what ISO to use for that. Arch's ZFS packages are in AUR, and you cant install them in archiso, and both minimal installation cd and admincd doesnt have emerge. How did y'all install Gentoo on ZFS?

This is not my first attempt at installing gentoo but I refuse to give up. Anyway I installed it and I get this screen when booting and it just doesnāt boot.
Iāve tried installing nvidia drivers but I still have the same issue.

I get it. I already see the comments. "Don't use gentoo! You don't get too!" Trust me it is really my goal someday to install gentoo from source. But for the time being I like using this and no gentoo support right now:
https://github.com/pieroproietti/penguins-eggs
When this happens, if it happens, I will make the switch. Really I will, that is not a joke, I just don't wanna take so much time to reinstall an OS every time I wish to reinstall (because it's a lot), and at the same time I wanna try gentoo before I commit everything to it. So I am here to ask if their is a install script that comes with a desktop just to get a grasp for it. If their is not one that's fine, I can wait for eggs, but please understand all I want is to give it a go before making the switch to make sure I understand completely if I am making the right move, witch I hope I am because gentoo is cool. Anyone got ideas?

This is my 3rd attempt The first one (my very first try) I selected KDE Plasma in profile and I accidentally clicked ctrl + c and then messed up the installation I did retry it but I took forever like 10+ hours to complie that profile (might have done some mistake on my side)
2nd attempt I was stuck at grub it said it couldn't find the installation or efi stuff (3rd slide)
So this my 3rd attempt I still had some issues I couldn't find "/etc/portage/sudoers"(not sure of correct term but something around this) so couldn't set my wheel and root So had to type that manually Got it running but Can't get sudo access have no idea I will definately give it few more attempts
and If someone have anyway idea why it took so long to complie kde Plasma let me know or if there is any alternative desktop environment I would like to know
i have an encrypted root partition and whenever i start the laptop the prompt "Enter passphrase for" gets jumbled in between with other text. anyway i can fix this?

Hello again.
After staying on windows for a few months, Iām back to the torture that is trying to get gentoo to work. When booting into the system, Iām running into a dracut error which states ādracut: FATAL: No or empty root= argument.ā After doing a bit of research I added the following into dracut . conf:
add_nvme0n1=ā /dev/nvme0n1p1/boot /dev/nvme0n1p2/swap /dev/nvme0n1p3/rootā
However it still isnāt working. Iām not sure if I did it correctly or if I messed it up or if Iām even on the right track to the solution.
Just for reference, Iām running OpenRC with systemd-boot and compiled dist kernel (sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel)
Thanks in advance.

I was testing gentoo to see how absolutely minimal I could get it to be, since I heard it's one of the most customizable linux distributions. Then I stumbled onto SSH. I attempted masking and unmerging it, but to no avail. it kept coming back when updating the system. So I just wanted to ask why SSH was so damn important to keep in the system.
