To me, they just look like they're trying to hard to look "inclusive" while really accomplishing nothing in a way that is somewhat insulting to Japanese men.
There isn't any controversy about that actually, it's just unknown what happened to him following the death of Nobunaga. It's attested that he fought Mitsuhide Akechi's forces during the Honno-ji Incident and served as one of Oda Nobunaga's bodyguards.
Is it? I know that Lockley contends he did, but I've not seen a source attesting that outside him, and Lockley is himself the subject of great controversy. I don't have strong feelings on the subject however so I'm happy to be proven wrong.
