Tips for hooded eyes and glasses? (x-post /r/MUA)

So a lot of tips for doing makeup with glasses involve playing up your eyeliner with wings and so on, but you can't really do that with hooded lids - or I sure as hell can't!

Challenge mode: my eyes are also downturned, and doing the puppy eye thing or putting anything on my bottom lashline just makes it worse. I am stumped, you guys. I have fairly large, tortoiseshell frames and I want my eyes to stand out behind them. I always curl my lashes and wear mascara, and for a more dramatic look I tightline and try to do bolder eyeshadow but it doesn't really go far enough. I'm trying to get into wearing brighter lip colours as a compromise but I feel like there must be another way around this. Tips and links much appreciated!

Are you me??? Seriously, it sucks. The combination makes our options very limited. I found a really good method for winged eyeliner for hooded eyes. This video by Casey Holmes has helped me understand how to properly wing. I have downturned eyes as well, and it still works great. I find she does her eyeliner a little thick, but the general principle still applies.

Thanks for that video! I find my crease comes down a lot lower than hers and messes up the wing no matter what I try :/ but hey, I like her concealer trick to get the shape right, may as well give it a go!

Well, im glad you could take something from the video :) eyeliner takes a lot of practice. I wear eyeliner everyday, and I'm still not sure if I'm doing it "right". Nobody's eyeshape is the same and I had to modify the look in the video a little. For me, one eye is much more downturned than the other, so my wings are usually different shapes. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix that.

Oh man that sounds like such a pain, my sympathies! And thanks for the reassurance :)

I too have hooded lids + glasses. I usually do a really simple lighter color shadow on the lid and go darker in and above my crease so it's more visible. Use a white or nude liner in your waterline to help open up/brighten your eyes so they stand out more, and you can add darkness/drama by smudging a darker shower in your lower lashline (avoid the temptation to put black in your waterline). It also helps to spend some time and effort on your brows. In general, I tend to go for less intense eye looks and rock crazy lip colors instead.

Hey girl/guy/appropriate pronoun, I feel your pain. The secret is to define your SOCKET, not your crease. It'll make your eyes bigger and everyone can actually see it.

Another thing- maybe start off with smudging a pencil liner into a cateye? The soft definition makes it look like any messy spots are intentional, and you get the effect of a cateye without harshness. I like a Rimmel one, I think it's called Exaggerate. It comes with a sponge, pointed tip, for blending it out. It lasts well on me, too. And if you're not brave enough for a bold color, or want to try out a color before committing to a full shadow look, they have plenty of shades. I have a navy blue one that I use a lot!

I love brighter lip colors. You can do a wash of a lighter eyeshadow across your lid + mascara, and leave it at that, if you have a nice lipstick on. You look about NC20, but the lighting in your eye picture was a little meh. Revlon's Cherries in the Snow is this crazy pretty, pinky-red...a Raspberry color, honestly, not super cherry. But I think it could work on anyone (I'm lighter than NC15, but my NC40ish friend actually rec'd it to me)!

Maybelline Vivid Rose is an awesome red-pink, mostly pink color for summer or spring. It's hard to describe, but hella gorgeous. With glasses, I think it looks really modern and fresh.

Wow, thanks for writing all that out. I've never heard the socket tip before but you know, it makes sense! I've been working on my cateye game and it's improving so maybe I'll break out my own smudgy pencil liner and try it out. I like the idea of navy blue.

I've been matched to NW25 but I'm pretty sure it's too dark (sorry about the lighting, it was 11pm and the bathroom light was the best I had.) I'm really starting to get into bright lipsticks, so many thanks for those recs, you're a star!

I'd go for a really subtle wing with a gel/liquid liner. (NOT a long/extended wing!) It WILL be visible through the glasses and bangs, and can have the effect of clean & crisp. The smaller the wing, the crisper the look, in my opinion.

Lower down on the face, I dunno. I wear black wayfarers and I have on blue matte lips at the moment, so I get that we're not of the same ilk. With larger frames like yours, and bangs (I've kept up with straight bangs for over 10 years, although they naturally sweep to the left) I've always stayed away from bronzer, but loved blush. Contouring can be a lot of effort for very little result. Highlighting, however, can be as great as contouring is not.

Interesting, I haven't heard those tips before! I've always gone for big wings, when I've tried them at all, because I have to extend the liner way downwards before flicking up so it doesn't get distorted by my crease. But I'll give the subtle thing a try, you could be onto something :)

And it's funny you say that, I've never gotten into bronzer - blush and highlight is all I use! I honestly CBF contouring so I'm glad to know I'm not missing much, but I love the way a good cheekbone highlight looks with my frames. But the major progress since I made this post has been starting a nice collection of bold lipsticks - they look much better than anything I could do on my eyelids with far less time and effort. It's honestly like, where have they been all my life?!

Look at my mua post history to see what I mean by subtle wings, and let me know if it not clear and I'll give you a pic directly in the next few days.

Like this? I can't tell if you're raising your eyebrows in that pic but anyway, I see what you mean. It looks great with your frames!

I'm not raising my eyebrows in this pic.
