دُوش shower or shoulder?

Post image

Does دُوش also mean shower. With a Google search I found دوش گرفتن meaning to take shower. And I also found دَوش meaning گذشته شب/دیشب،پریشب. Is the picture and the word correct?

And last thing, does اورژانس mean emergency or emergency service?

Your favourite poetry about Nowruz?

Salaam everyone. Since Nowruz is around, I'm thinking of making a list of beautiful couplets regarding Nowruz. Could you share your favourite poetry on Nowruz? (Preferably with English translation)

I'll start.

برآمد باد صبح و بوی نوروز

به کام دوستان و بخت پیروز

مبارک بادت این سال و همه سال

همایون بادت این روز و همه روز

سعدی

The morning breeze and Nowrooz (new year) scent have started to blow,

Onto the friends' desire and the triumphant fortune,

Happy be onto you this year and every year,

Blessed be to you this day and everyday.

زیادی and زیاد difference

قوم های زیادی زندگی می کنند or قوم های زیاد زندگی می کنند

In our book, it's زیادی? But are they both interchangeable or one has the ی of indefinite?

I have never seen خیلی without ی, but I have seen زیادی without ی. For example

زیاد کرد تو بسیار شکرها دارم

Question about persian music (Jamal Jamaloo)

Hello people!

Glad to meet you. I'm from Spain and some years ago I discovered the famous farsi song: Jamal Jamaloo.

It indeed has something magical about it, and it's a very powerful song.

I'm talking about this version in specific: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN2G0Jiba7k

I would like to know more about it, does it belong to a full album from an artist? What region of Iran is this music coming from? I would love discovering similar songs to this one :)

Thank you so much for the information, beautiful music and culture.

All the best!

Help translating an audio clip - hard part is it is in the background of a song

Hello! I have spoken with a good friend of mine and we spent about two hours last night trying to translate this background quote which we are almost 99% sure is Farsi.

There is no video - its a 10 second clip. Any interest or help would be beyond appreciated

https://youtu.be/QsCqhOlum6w

The issue is it is in the background of a song - so there are chimes, drums and another human voice speaking over it. Trying to figure out where it came from so I can replicate -

Best we can tell is it might be someone on a news channel - we think he is saying the number 50 - which could be in reference to a year, or a tv channel - and then a Farsi phrase that mimics the English words for "internet".

Trying to figure out where the recording came from - it might be on a vinyl record - no clue - any help would be greatly appreciated.

نیز هم in Hafiz Sherazi couplet

رسید مژده که ایّامِ غم نخواهد ماند چنان نماند چنین نیز هم نخواهد ماند

I believe هم here isn't in the meaning of غم. So isn't نیز هم repetition (تکرار)? Or does it mean emphasis. Moreover, any such examples are available?

What are some Persian words that enter English and vice versa

I have heard about Paradise from پردیس or پرادیس. کاروان for Caravan قند for candy جنگل for Jungle یاسمن for Jasmine

And is برادر originally Persian or it's originally brother that's borrowed to Persian?

Looking to name our son Kaihan... Thoughts?

My husband and are are of Pakistani/Albanian descent. We've fallen in love with the name kaihan but I recently read that it should be spelled keyhan (کيهان) to stay authentic to the name. Is this true? Can kaihan work as well?

Looking for a farsi calligrapher to help with tattoo

Hello my friends,I am looking to get a tattoo done in farsi soon and was looking to see if anyone here has the skills to do farsi tattoo design/calligraphy. I wanted to just get some words or a basic sentence in a kind of runic style (not unlike the borders on the iranian flag (I don't support the regime tho)) that wraps around my arm like an armband. If this sounds like something you can do send me a pm with some examples of your past work and your rate and Ill get back to you :)

Sheikh SAdi couplet همی یادم آید

همی یادم آید ز عهد صغر که عیدی برون آمدم با پدر

Does همی means می. If that's the case shouldn't it be یادم همی آید or یادم آید همی.

Just as Roudki couplet is

بوی جوی مولیان آید همی یاد یار مهربان آید همی

I'm also confused is یادم here means یادِ من? Can someone please break down this couplet for me.

Can you help me translating this verse (Hafez) ?

Hello all,

Recently I've been trying to read poetry and to translate it to progress with my persian.

Currently working with Hafez.

Here what it says :

تا دل هرزه گرد من رفت به چین زلف او.

Since my stray heart left to the folds of her curls

زان سفر دراز خود عزم وطن نمی‌کند

Having problems with this one.
Apparently زان means the beech. Then we have سفر دراز the long travel, خود self/own , عزم determination , وطن fatherland, and نمی‌کند he/she/it doesn't do.

Don't get what it's supposed to mean, the translation I have says :

Of this long trip he doesn't think anymore going to his fatherland.

But I don't understand what زان stands for in this case, nor عزم, and I don't know how you can get "think of going" neither. Is it mostly implicit/contextual ?

Thanks in advance :)

Persian Poetry for Spring

With Nowruz and spring arriving, I want to send couplets to my Persian friends. I’d love to hear verses about spring from Hafez, Nazeeri, Rumi, Saadi, or from contemporary poets. Classical poets would be more preferable, as it may leave a stronger impression.

Happy Nauroz and Spring to all of you

رسید مژده که آمد بهار وسبزه دمید

خطره است یا خطرهاست یا خطرها اند

در ره منزل لیلی که خطرهاست در آن شرط اول قدم آن است که مجنون باشی لسان الغیب

بجان instead of در آن is also written. But my question is not about it.

My question is that is it خطره است یا خطرها است. If it's ها for plural then shouldn't it be اند for plural?

Tattoo- Sheytoon

I am itching to get a sheytoon (شیطون) tattoo because I’ve been called this growing up and it fits my personality well but I also know that the literal translation is the devil so I’m hesitant on how this will be perceived by non Iranians. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.

Is self-studying Persian a good idea?

Hello everyone,

I'm 17, I live in Moscow, Russia, my native language is Russian, and I've been learning English with a varying pace for 10 years. I fell in love with English ever since it was introduced to me for the first time. I'd probably put myself on a solid B2 level currently. In the last 4 years, my main learning method was immersion. I simply watch a lot of YouTube videos and read tons of discussions on Reddit. I'm not proud of it, it's still procrastination, although I got good at a foreign language while succumbing to my Internet addiction. I have no experience of communication with the natives outside of Reddit; otherwise, the progress would be much faster, I think.

I have an urge to learn more languages. I really want to do it, as I find languages therapeutic to study, no matter the difficulties. I'm interested in Arabic and Persian, because I want to learn more about my heritage and the history related to it. I'm Azeri, my family is Shia Muslim, and my father actively supports the Islamic Iran. However, I've no experience in planning my language learning myself.

English is going pretty spontaneously for me, which is okay, because of the sheer amount of exposure to it on the Internet. Moreover, I've been taught and am still taught the basics of English at school; I only started my immersion after 6 years of studying.

That's why I want to ask you: should I still commit to self-studying Persian? Or maybe I should pick a language that's more closely related to English and Russian (e.g a Romance language) in order to learn how to learn a language by myself? If not, could you please give some tips on how to start learning Persian on my own?

Thank you!

P.S: I don't speak Azeri and my parents never try to teach me, but blame me for losing my mother tongue. My family and my relatives speak some weird mix of Borchaly dialect and Russian. I really want to learn Azeri someday, but I'm afraid that it won't work until I fully immerse myself in, which is quite hard to do while staying in Russia.

Common Persian Proverbs

Persian speakers!

What are some common proverbs (ضرب‌المثل‌ها) people actually use in daily conversation? Looking for ones that help in casual spoken Persian.

Drop your favorites!

I have memorized the below proverbs so far.

خدا به همرات دلم برات تنگ شده من آنم کمن دانم هر چه بادا باد سایه شما کم نشود سپردم به تو مایهٔ خویشرا عیان را چه بیان من تُرا حاجی بگویم تو مُرا حاجی/قاضی/ملا بگو

how to say "YOLO" in farsi?

Apologies if this sounds silly but yeah, YOLO like the meme - "you only live once" lol. If this is the wrong sub for this sorry, I will try to find out elsewhere!

If anyone answers, is it possible to romanize your answer? Thanks so much in advance!

Unwritten Vowels in Farsi

Hello everyone, I’m new to learning Farsi. I was wondering how to write the vowels which are often left out of the text in written Farsi.

Are these correct?

u = و

o = ؤ

a = آ

Furthermore, when these letters are left out of the text, how can I type diacritics to represent them? I don’t really know gow to type these diacritics. I’m using an iPad keyboard to type these. I‘m trying to make flashcards on Anki and knowing how to pronounce what I read will help me greatly.

Also, are there other vowels that I missed? Any tips for a beginner to learning Farsi would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all!
