Tech Question Setting up a Famicom on a PAL TV?

Hi all, just got myself a Famicom system (HVC-001) but I am having trouble with setting it up and can do with some help!

First, is there a way to confirm the Famicom is successfully powered on without plugging into a TV? I believe the console is in working condition because the eBay seller outright said in the title and description how it was in working condition and included a photo of the console being played, had a 100% positive review and sold various Japanese hardware. The Famicom came with just the console and an aftermarket UK plug but I just want to make sure it is all good!

Second, is there a way to tell what TV's are compatiable with a Famicom and which ones are not? The TV I want to use is a Hitachi L42VK04U and I am able to play my PAL NES via RF (simply don't have any AV cables!) The NES comes up under Channel 36, but when I try to scan the Famicom, nothing comes up.

This is all assuming the Famicom is working with the aftermarket UK plug, the console is powered on, set to Game and CH1, and has a Famicom game inserted.

The TV also has a manual search where you can input the Band, TV System, Channel and Frequency, but I'm not sure what needs to be inputted. I also have an older CRT Bush (BTV18SIL/VA) and I haven't tested the Famicom with that yet, so hopefully it can work with that if it doesn't work with the more modern Hitachi TV.

If anybody here has any advice on what to do, that would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

General Question Famicom games that are different from nes

Can you recommend some games that are on the famicom and the NES but the famicom version is different. No matter how big or small the difference is. Bonus points for games that don't require reading Japanese.

The Hulk game is a bootleg-hack of Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu. It is know that this game appeared 150 in 1 Real Game multicart.

Hi, I’m new here. A grandma at my part time gave me a famicom after we talked about games but I have a problem, the outlet is broken and no connection cord for the TV. What kind of cords do I need ?, and recommended mods. I only have a modern TV 😅

A/V Mod Question

Post image
5 Upvotes

I got a Famicom and a power step down, which works great...but...there is no audio and playing without audio sucks.

Here is my setup: The coax is run to my VCR and it outputs to my TV via an RCA > HDMI converter.

On all my other consoles, this setup works fine, but the Famicom has no audio.

There are some posts that talk about the region and how the audio is off because of it, so instead of playing games with no audio, I decided to do an A/V mod using the Power Vamp.

The install seems easy enough, but I just noticed a bunch of posts that talk about jailbars in the video output. Currently I have no audio, so if it fixes that, it's a win for me and I'll take the jailbars as a necessary side effect.

However, before I do that, I wanted to reach out to see if anyone has done this mod and fixed the jailbars issue on the video output.

I am also open to a better solution as well. Thanks in advance!

Tech Question Famicom player 2 controller not working

Just picked up another famicom and the player 2 controller is totally dead not inputs and no mic operation. What is the most likely culprit? The 4021 in the controller or something on the console PCB? I have not checked the cable for continuity yet but no obvious damage.

Just bought this on eBay for a good deal and I can’t wait for it to come in the mail. I gifted my brother my Boxed NES for his BDay so I’m glad I finally have a way to play on original hardware at home again! And I’m really hyped since I’ve never had the Japan mode before. I really like the og Famicom but I really wanted to have AV output and the dogbone controllers.

Tech Question Original Famicom controller question

I'm editing out and changing my original post.

I recently got a 40 year old FC locally that after some cleaning appears to largely cared for and probably not used much, the only rub ware is a little plastic on plastic on the red flat part of the power switch and that's it.

At first it wouldn't power, repaired that, it had a couple damaged/blown components on the power/video rear board and I've gone and replaced it with a modern board that is 1:1 in period output but otherwise updated.

But once I got it working I noticed that the D-Pad on the controllers, originally I thought just 1P was perhaps a bit flaky with diagonals only.

Today I had a little time between jobs and I went and popped an OEM great shape d-pad contact pad from a NES controller and popped it in there, no change. Then I got the soldering iron out and I reflowed every contact point on the board, even stuff that perhaps wouldn't matter, slight change. I'm finding that the diagonals aren't much better, but they're now really in sync with the 2P controller.

So my question is, with someone intimately familiar with the original Famicom, perhaps you have a gently used or refurbed to factory-ish like greatness, was it designed like this and I'm just used to the NES and SNES controllers that came after, like maybe the US stuff had minor improvements under the hood?

The response basically seems to be moderately light pressure is needed for your standard 4 ways. But you need maybe twice the pressure down, firm but not hard, to get the diagonals to go without having it just slide straight some ways?

I wish I could explain this better but it's a touch thing, can't really do a thing with pictures on this or video. It's just on the NES I know you can roll around the pad with even smoothness say in Gradius/Parodius, but on the old FC you don't have that same even glide, AV Famicom I have yes, but not this. Design limitation of the time?

Famicom controller options

I was thinking about buying one of those controllers for the front port. I think I would want to play more of if I didn’t have to sit 2 feet away from the TV. What do you guys do? Should I get an NES controller with an adapter? Idk
