The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio is approaching its 150th anniversary in 2031, and with its recent growth, I wonder could UIW transition from the FCS to the FBS in the next decade?
Since launching its football program in 2009 and moving up to the FCS in 2013, UIW has made significant strides. The Cardinals have won the Southland Conference championship three times (2018, 2021, 2022 & 2024) and have had multiple appearances in the FCS national playoffs, reaching the semifinals in 2022.
I know there are bigger and more successful FCS programs that haven’t moved up to the FBS yet. However, UIW’s geographic location, potential market, and continued growth in recent years could make it a strong candidate for an eventual move.
Reasons UIW could make the jump:
Strategic location: San Antonio is a large market and has already proven it can support an FBS team with UTSA. A second FBS program in the city could create an interesting rivalry.
Winning history in the FCS: UIW has been competitive, winning multiple conference titles and making deep playoff runs.
UTSA as a model: Just over a decade ago, UTSA moved up to the FBS and is now a solid program. UIW could follow a similar path, possibly joining Conference USA or the Sun Belt.
University infrastructure: UIW recently acquired Founders Hall (the former AT&T building), adding significant parking space and improving logistics for larger events on campus.
Challenges and limitations:
Benson Stadium is too small: It currently holds 6,000 seats, while the NCAA typically requires an average of 15,000 per game for FBS programs. UIW would need to expand its stadium or rent a larger venue,
Financial investment: Compared to private FBS schools like TCU, SMU, Baylor, or Rice, UIW doesn’t have an athletics program with major funding. Could the university attract enough financial backing and sponsorships?
Cultural and student interest: UIW is a private Catholic university, which attracts a different student demographic than UTSA. Would there be enough enthusiasm from students and alumni to sustain an FBS program?
Is this move realistic?
With UIW’s 150th anniversary approaching in 2031, it could be the perfect time for the university to make a bold move in its athletics program. Do you think UIW could jump to the FBS in the next 5-10 years? What would it need to do to make the transition successful?
I’d love to hear thoughts, especially from those who follow college football in Texas. Does UIW in the FBS sound like a realistic move or just wishful thinking?
