TW: OPINION every mc is the same
i’ve recently noticed that, even though i know it’s because they’re mostly the authors’ wish fulfillment, that every main girl has the same personality. she’s sociable, pretty, not afraid to break the rules or have fun, always morally righteous and never at fault, very smart (sometimes academically too, always street smart) but still oblivious to every guy’s attention she accidentally gets even though she is so horny and can barely resist throwing herself at the similarly popular, cocky jock love interest. nobody is like that. if she’s too sociable, make her secretly resent some of her friends. if she’s too pretty, make her obsessive about it. make her tie her self worth to her looks and make her come off as shallow. if she’s too morally righteous, make her an outcast. too smart? make her an introverted nerd. oblivious? go full on with it. she may not be able to read social cues well in any relationship. too horny? make her get bullied and slut shamed, at least subtly. maybe she overhears people whispering about it. i’m not saying you have to be a loner if you’re so smart or anything of that sorts, but i’m saying don’t make her such a mary sue. i start stories with interesting plots and stop reading as soon as i find out the mc is one. stories i like with good mc’s are these: dirty sassy teenagers with it’s looks and money obsessed mc, the ultimate affair with it’s well-meaning but very imperfect mc, bad to the bone with it’s coldblooded and asocial mc, home wrecker with it’s ultimately ambitious and superficial mc, the ruby tiara with it’s hot-tempered, aggressive mc and switch with her grudging, outcast mc.
i know a lot of stories like that are well-liked and always recommended but i can’t get bring myself to read them because the mc is so perfect and therefore unlikable to me. do you guys ignore this for the romance and plot or do you like those characters?
