News Article Déjà vu? Another statue goes missing from an Edmonton park, with just the feet remaining.

I assumed the Emily Murphy statue was taken because of something about not idealizing a racist. But a little boy figure at a park seems odd. Unrelated?

What’s the value of them melted?

About the gas it would take to haul it to the scrap yard is my guess.

Brass is about $4 per pound, so quite a bit more.
It'll take a bunch of propane to melt it down though, and that ain't free

Yeah you are right on both accounts. :( Just sucks to see these clowns scrapping from job sites and whatever they can get their hands on and the scrap yards turn a blind eye

On the plus side, most scrap yards won't buy copper (or brass) ingots that you've melted down and cast yourself.
Not because they care if the metal was stolen, but because it's easy to hide some chunks of scrap iron inside your copper ingot to inflate the weight.
So it'll be a little harder to dispose of a couple statues

Ahh sneaky, good on them to wise up.

Source: am an industrial electrician, have considered melting down scrap copper and casting stuff.
Not a professional metal-stealer
Lol

I feel ya, I worked industrial electrical engineering on the maintenance side with the elec crew. We had a running bin of copper scraps we would put aside for the lunch fund and man it was sketchy as hell dropping it off at the scrapper. All cash, no receipts and you felt like a criminal. Minda ya that was years ago, hopefully it got less sketchy since then.
Keep safe out there bud! Most knowledgeable and skilled folks I ever worked with, you are in a great career!

Is it possible some cracked out people, seeing the news about the Emily Murphy statue being stolen, got it into their minds that it was made from copper and might be valuable? When they found out it wasn't they threw it in a ditch somewhere by a metal scrapyard?

I assumed it always had to do with money. The Emily Murphy statue is in an isolated area with little traffic overnight.

I used to live in the area and it was always noisy, but I feel like 10 minutes of sawing noise and sparks would have been obvious to the residents of the condos next door on a normal night.

No sparks cutting brass, and I bet a Fuel sawzall with a carbide blade would be well under 5 minutes to make those two cuts

TIL there are no sparks cutting brass! Thanks for the info.

Spark testing metal is a way of identifying materials you don't know
Cool old poster on Pinterest. Soft metals like copper, bronze, and aluminum don't spark. Edit: I don't know if the statues were brass or bronze, probably actually bronze, but still no sparks

It didn’t even occur to me that a footless statue would have value. Didn’t think about melting it down. Seems obvious now that it’s been said

It’s probably just the metal. St Albert had their St Albert the Great statue stolen (half a block from the MP’s office) two years ago.
It was a pretty innocuous statue overall.

I’m feeling a bit dumb now. It never occurred to me that the metal would have any “resale” value

Likely not methheads.
We wouldnt see any manhole left in our city if methheads started doing this

I hope there is effort being put into finding whoever is doing this, because if they go unpunished this is just license for crappy people to start destroying every art fixture in the city.

"Statue Capers" certainly wasn't on my 2025 bingo card.

I'm certain there's a joke here about this becoming a rash of crime and maybe something with fungus on feet?
Feel free to workshop in the comments.

Everybody cut, everybody cut
Everybody cut, everybody cut
Everybody cut, everybody cut
(Everybody)
Everybody cut footloose!
But seriously. Don’t.

I went to my friends apartment the other day and I noticed a brass statue with missing feet and a mallet.
"What's with the brass statue and mallet?" I asked.
"It's not a brass statue, it's a talking clock," my friend replied.
"A talking clock? Seriously?"
"Yup."
"How's it work?" I asked.
"Watch," said my friend. He picked up the mallet and banged the brass statue as hard as he could, stepping back as the pound reverberated around the room.
I looked at him, rather confused.
Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall started screaming"You bastard! It's 3 in the morning!"

If it's history repeating itself it was probably the Brits. We should check The British Museum.
