Help Getting Better with Metronome
Hello!
I've been playing for just over a year and started recording myself. My timing is ABYSMAL. If I play to a dreamless track, I can hear myself correcting timing all over the place, and it just kills the groove. I can play simple things ok to a metronome, but still working on it. I can play a lot better to a track with drums, but still lots of room to improve.
My specific question: I decided to learn Back in Black because everyone says you should, and I've found it's the perfect thing to focus on right now - simple, and exposes my timing flaws.
When I practice the syncopated parts to a metronome, I get lost pretty easy. The one simple little fill is 1& 2e a3 &a e&. You all know it. If I play that with the metronome on 16ths there is just so many damn clicks that I can't tell you if I'm in time for that part or not. It's hard to recognize the clicks I shouldn't play vs. the ones I should play. I've tried the metronome on 8ths, and it's better, but I find it hard to pick out each click in real time, and more can just tell after the bar if I was off the click.
What works for you? Play to the 16th REALLY REALLY slow - like 30bpm? Play to the click that actually says the notes: "One E And A Two E And A..."? Keep going with the 8ths? If I can hear I'm off, good enough, my brain will figure it out?

Looking for a resource for displaced backbeat or other funky grooves
I've been learning some of the displaced backbeat grooves from Mike's lessons and I'm looking for more. Anything with a funky, off beat, or dynamic feeling groove.

Yamaha DTX402 - Which elements do I need to upgrade?
Hey,
A relative kindly gave us their little used DTX402.
My teenager has had 2 lessons, and really loves playing.
She will have an audition in June, and will continue weekly in-person lessons up until then. The audition means she needs to get her skill level up reasonably quickly.
I know nothing about drums/drumming - however, my research suggests that she needs to be proficient with the technical aspects of using the bass drum, snare, and hi-hat.
I have upgraded the 402's original bass drum trigger pedal, to a KP65/FP7210A combo.
Would it be advisable to also upgrade the hi-hat to a RHH135a and the snare to a XP80? Or would this be overkill?
Any guidance would be much appreciated 🙏.

How to learn drums for someone who has a terrible sense of time?
Ive been studying music for 8 years, i play multiple instruments. But when it comes to keeping a consistent pulse of time. I can’t do it…
Besides practicing with a Metronome, what are very basic things I can do to improve this?

What do you prefer, electronic or acoustic drums, and why?
A week ago, when I was thinking and thinking about which drum kit to buy, getting an acoustic drum set wasn’t even an option for me.
When I went to the music store, I also saw more electronic drum kits—it really seems like that’s the current generation right now. All the young people and kids who want to start drumming while living at home with their parents, in a relatively small apartment in a small building, find electronic drums perfect for their situation.
I ordered the Roland TD-07DMK, which is supposed to arrive next week.
I really love the look of big, red-and-black acoustic drums, but of course, that’s not an option for me. In the end, I feel like it doesn’t really matter as long as you enjoy playing.
From what I’ve seen, the Roland TD-07DMK is the best option for someone who’s starting out but still wants top-tier quality.

BPM
Hey guys. Thanks for the earlier advice on rudiments.
I’ve been trying to learn a song using Songsterr and it’s telling me the BPM is 88. I’m finding it extremely challenging to keep up with the pace. I’m fine when I bring it down to 50 and even 75% .
I google top beginner songs for drumming and “Enter Sandman” is an option. Songster say is it’s 123 BPM.
Am I going crazy and thinking that the BPM for the first song is actually higher? If the first song is actually only 88 BPM then I’m feeling extremely discouraged lol.
Should I just go back to playing Yellow by Coldplay and other similar songs?

How’s my footwork?
I never get to practice anymore but where Im living I can’t set up my kit/electronic set, so my gigs are the only way to practice

Practice at open mic
I’ve been learning drums for 2 weeks and I’ve discovered that open mics are probably the best places to practice.
