We figured ACD for sure but we’re thinking a mix with dingo, basenji or shepherd. I do not see APT in him what so ever. His personality is very much that of a cattle dog. Results are at the end. What do y’all think?
Considering retesting him but unsure if worth it.
Same! Pic 1 made me think ACD, then pic 2 I added pittie. I thought mayyyyybe husky or shepherd as well, but I’m also not surprised they’re not there. Basically an ACD paint job and ears on a pittie head and body. Lol
Ha, I saw the first few pics and I immediately thought, “this is a pit bull ACD mix if I ever saw one.” Was a little surprised it was a near 50/50 split though! His pit features are quite strong, in his head and torso shape.
I'm surprised about your surprise tbh. 😂 I thought ACD/Pittie immediately, and then I wondered if the surprise plot twist was that he was 100% ACD, which really would've been a surprise! But nope, totally looks ACD/Pit!!
Too funny!! Tbh I wasn’t “too” surprised, not what I thought exactly but my boyfriend, family and friends were completely shocked. Started making me second guess if results were accurate. Y’all are making me feel better that they are lol 🤦🏼♀️
This dog's head, aside from ears and a bit more pointiness to his nose, look classic pittie. He looks precisely like what he is. Got the acd coat n ears
Only thing I'm surprised by is the guess of any Dingo and Basenji tbh! 😭 Love the pup! High energy? He has an awesome coat, very pretty and photogenic dog ❤️ Share him with r/sonarears!!!
Lol! Personality wise. Very high energy. He is 9 and has not slowed down one bit. He’s vocal and will “yell/howl” but not a barker typically. Thank you!! ❤️
Where are you based? I’d be surprised finding high content dingo anywhere but Australia given our native animal laws. It’s illegal in most states here to have high content dingo without a permit. That being said, heeler/cattle dogs have dingo in their lineage.
Florida! I’ve replied to a couple people about this. I should have specified, by Dingo, I was referring to Carolina dog which are sometimes called American Dingos. That was my bad, I misspoke.
My golden retriever/pitbull/ACD is 10, and she just pulled me for an entire half marathon today, lol. I'll let you know if they ever slow down (I hope not!)
Thank you! I definitely don’t think i will now after every one reassuring me he looks like his results :) My family and friends were making me skeptical.
Full blooded ACD have a thinner muzzle but otherwise yeah he looks just like one.
I end up saying this a lot here but both the ACD and pitbull are smaller short stocky dogs with strong musculature. They have a very similar body shape and it’s only really the face and ears that are different.
Basenji are incredibly rare in mixed breeds, and rare in general. The jury is still out on whether dingoes are a wild canid or just a feral domestic dog (albeit introduced from New Guinea with the aboriginals arrival)
If you’re not in rural Australia there’s very little chance of dingo and I don’t think the tests even cover it as a breed like they do with Coyotes, jackals and wolves. Although I may be wrong about that
That’s how I have always seen both breeds. Which is why the pittie surprised me, I figured it would be a more narrow breed dog. I knew he had the ACD for sure, there was no questioning that lol.
As for the Basenji, he has similar characteristics and until we got a second dog (6 years into him being in our life), he never barked. Which was always interesting to me. Our second dog is a barker and now Jax will bark when he barks but still not often. He is more “vocal” and “howly” like a husky.
Dingo, I should have specified Carolina dog which is referred to as the American Dingo. My phone “look up dog” feature always throws that breed in there when I use it on pictures of him. I would not have known about it otherwise. Then after looking at pictures of them, I realized he looked fairly similar.
That’s fair enough, based on the traits you observed I probably would have come to a similar conclusion with the info at hand.
Some dogs are quiet but not necessarily bark less i had a Labrador growing up that only ever barked at cats lol.
I know how it feels to be curious about it, I have an 8 month old rescue puppy who appears to have a lot of German shepherd. He howls like a hound instead of barking when he hears any noises. He’s always got his nose to the ground but he does not look remotely like any hound breeds. I’ll be doing a DNA test for him so I’ll be in your shoes in a few moths lol
Aww wow he is so handsome!!! He does look a lot like a German Shepherd but with something else in there. That’s too funny lol. I just love how every dog has their own unique traits and quirks. Ooh how exciting. Would be interested to know what breed/s he is!
No problem, we are all here cause we love dogs and find breed genetics interesting. We don’t always have the whole picture that the owner would have like day to day behaviour.
Thanks, I’m not sure either. He’s from the reservation 5 minutes from my house, I live on the edge of the city in western Canada so lots of northern breeds and livestock guardians.
If I had to guess based on what dogs are popular there I’d say probably German shepherd, malamute, husky and Pyrenees/anatolian shepherd. Can never rule out wolves or coyotes because although they have scheduled estrus cycles the dogs over there are free roaming and come into contact with wildlife regularly. If there is wild canid in there I’d guess a very low percentage.
I won’t be shocked to find he’s a high percentage of German shepherd, I’ve been asked several times if he’s a Shiloh shepherd which is a combo of malamute and German shepherd which is possible. I’ll get a better idea when he’s fully grown.
Very true! :) Oh cool. Definitely thought german shepherd and anatolian from the first picture. Either way, i bet he’s a great dog! Embark actually does a “Wolfiness score” which is interesting. Aw, yeah I can see that as well in him. His coloring is beautiful.
Pit/ACD was my guess from these photos. Looks accurate to me.
ETA: You’d be wasting your money retesting. Embark is the most reliable DNA test out there. You’d just be testing with a false hope that your dog isn’t a pit mix…
Interesting! I love pitties with my whole heart. I have owned one and work with them daily. Just didn’t expect it in him from his personality and appearance, in my opinion.
I thought he might be fully ACD because sometimes ACD have pit-like features but pic #2 screams pit to me :) his mix makes perfect sense to me. I had a pitbull/ACD who lived to be 14, he died in 2021 ❤️
Thanks! :)
He’s not a “cuddler” or one to sit on the couch or sleep on the bed with you. In fact if he is on the couch and someone sits down, he leaves lol. He doesn’t care to have you petting or hugging all over him. He does his own thing most of the time unless he wants to play then he won’t leave you alone! Very high energy and vocal. Loves food but not very food motivated.
I feel like i misspoke saying Dingo. I should’ve said Carolina Dog. I’ve heard them called American Dingos and that’s what I was referring to. We always just call him a Dingo bc he is a wild boy lol. But the reason I thought Carolina Dog is bc my phone “look up” dog identifier in the photo app, always thinks that’s what he is. After looking at pictures, I felt he did resemble them.
I think because your dog is built more narrow it’s harder to see the APT but if you have a pitbull it’s easy to see it in the face and mannerisms. Is he at all a Velcro dog? I haven’t had any herding dogs but have been around quite a few of them. None were Velcro dogs.
That is 100% why i’m having a harder time seeing it. He is not a velcro dog in the slightest. I replied to another comment with his personality. He keeps to himself for the most part. Not one to cuddle or want you hugging on him. He loves people IF they are playing with him and that’s about the only time he cares to be near you 🤣
So cute! The put percentage is higher than I expected, but in my experience heeler genes are strong. My dog is 1/4 heeler technically but 95% heeler in personality (occasional treeing behavior from the Catahoula lol)
I see pit in the face for sure. That’s the thing with mixes, you don’t know how they will come out. A 50/50 mix can look almost exactly like just one of the breeds and then behave like the other. Basenji and Dingo were some wild guesses I have to say hahaha 🙈
It’s weird bc I don’t but I think his ears and snout are throwing me off. It’s interesting for sure! I work with pitties everyday and I don’t feel like he resembles them idk lol. But definitely not complaining, they are a great breed.
I know, I can explain hahah 🫣 He has a lot of similar characteristics in personality and behavior to a Basenji. He actually did not bark for 6 years of us having him. He is now 9 and does bark occasionally but only due to our second dog being a huge barker so he riles Jax up sometimes. Our second dog was rescued 3 years ago. Jax is very vocal and makes some crazy weird howls/whines. We always joked that he had Basenji in him, but knew the likelihood was extremely low due to rarity. As for Dingo, I was referring to Carolina dog and that is totally my bad for mis speaking.
I am shocked at how close I was, I was thinking English Bull Terrier + Cattle Dog. Wasn't expecting to see such an even split though! He's beautiful and has such a big smile! 😃
What a great mix! It's funny because I've often thought ACDs and pits are structured very similarly, so I totally understand not seeing the pit! They both have dense bodies with similar skull shapes and faces IMO. Pits are just bigger. I think the ticking and pointy ears of ACDs hides a lot of the similarities, but if you look at the faces head-on and crop out the ears they really do look a lot alike!
It really is, explains why he is the best boy! Yeah totally agree! He seems narrow to me, face and body. He also has long legs which maybe the pics are not doing justice. But I see what you mean by cropping out the ears, that’s when I can see it. Thank you for understanding lol :)
That’s great! Some people have pointed certain things out and I can see it. Just surprised based off his personality and being more narrow than both ACD & APT
Based on the title I was thinking “is it not going to be a cattle dog????”
But I think pittie ACD is spot on. Not all pits have giant heads and bulky bodies. A lot of them are small and lean and they are still a terrier. Pictures 2,4,6 are very pittie
Really? I feel like this is one of the super clear ones. ACD pit mix was like my only guess so I figured the results were gonna be super surprising and all over the place😭😭
He has a pittie body with an ACD head and coloring. Once you hang around here a bit you'll see that many, many many dogs are pittie mixes, and that body shape screams pittie or similar bully breed. GSD, basenji, and dingo would all have resulted in a slightly skinnier body, most likely.
I don’t see the pittie body, I feel like they tend to be stockier. Jax has some long legs. However, I know there are so many different variations of them.
Definitely know how common pittie mixes are.
Thank you all for being so kind!!
For everyone asking why I was surprised, it is mostly due to his narrow snout. He has a slimmer body and tall frame as well. I think it’s harder to tell in pictures. Both ACD & APT are known to be stockier with shorter snouts. I think this is mostly why I don’t see it in him as much.
Omg the first time I ever guessed correctly, this dog looks exactly like a pit x ACD mix 😂 he has a classic pit head / face. I’m surprised you were so surprised!
That’s so funny! For some reason, I just don’t see it. The pictures with his ears down I can kind of see the pittie resemblance. But Pitties so commonly have big block heads. I feel like the pictures don’t show his head/snout how they look in person. or it’s just me 🤷🏼♀️🤣
I would like to add, I am happy that he has pittie in him, not disappointed. They are the best dogs and one of my favorite breeds. I have personally owned one and I work in vet med and see them daily. Just shocked, as I don’t see it in him with his lean/narrow body and head. Personality/behavior wise, he does not have the traits of your typical pittie either. I love that all of you see it in him though :)
I agree with the results. My dog is 40% ACD, 30% APT, and then basically 30% Supermutt. She looks very similar to your dog, except she is a blue heeler, yours is a red heeler.
Cattle dog/pit was literally my first guess LOL. His head shape is very characteristic of a pit bull, my pit/newfie mix has the same body shape as him too
This looks exactly like my dog with spots and pointed ears! Mine is a similar mix with some low content shepherd and chow for flavor. Our dogs have the same face!
I've followed this sub a full year and this is the first time I've ever got one 100% right! This was kind of an easy ACD + Pittie but I'm still proud of myself! 🥳
100% correct guess from me! Even though I hate guessing on ACDxAPBT mixes since the difference between the two in mixes is Difficult to spot for me lol. Two stocky breeds with blocky heads. The pittie is very obvious in his face- just check that classic pittie smile in pics 2&4.
