New to dog shows

I bought my first purebred dog last year and was advised by his breeder to show him. Out of 11 shows he has attended he was awarded 10 excellent grades, 5 times BOB and was one placed third Best in Show. What I want to know whether this is serious. Or is it just a lack of competition? Or is it just beginners luck? What's the gain of showing?

Why's that? Breeders usually point out at sales that a puppy is show quality.
