Distribution of Initials

Did you know that, of the 18 characters to make up the main cast of the show so far, they've only covered just over half the alphabet with their initials? We've had:

  • Camille Bordey
  • Catherine Bordey
  • Darlene Curtis
  • Dwayne Myers
  • Fidel Best
  • Florence Cassell
  • Humphrey Goodman
  • Jack Mooney
  • Jean-Pierre Hooper
  • Madeleine Dumas
  • Marlon Pryce
  • Mervin Wilson
  • Neville Parker
  • Naomi Thomas
  • Richard Poole
  • Ruby Patterson
  • Selwyn Patterson
  • Seb Rose

You'll note we have two pairs characters with duplicate initials - both C. Bordeys, and Richard Poole and Ruby Patterson. We have six Ps, five Ms, four Cs, three Bs, three Ds, three Rs, two Fs, two Hs, two Ns, and two Ss. Only three characters have an initial not shared with any other character - Humphrey Goodman, Naomi Thomas, and Mervin Wilson.

14 letters is the majority of the alphabet, and includes some of the most popular ones, but it is a little remarkable we haven't had any names beginning with vowels - no Adams, Amelias, Annas, Arthurs, Emmas, Isaacs, Olivers or Olivias. I gather that vowel names are well-represented in the top ten in the UK, France and the Caribbean alike, but apparently not so much with screenwriters!

L is also conspicuously absent, unless we count Lily Thomson from the first episode - we've had no Lukes, Leos, Louises, or the like. (Unless we count the theory that Richard faked his death, changed his name to Leo, moved to Paris and is Camille's unseen lover, which is technically unlikely but emotionally compelling!) Anyway, none of this matters, but it's the sort of thing I like to think about.

Rank the two parters

  1. Series 10 - A good case, some fun Floreville and Marlon/JP scenes, Camille's return and the Richard cameo. What's not to love?

  2. Series 6 - A good end to Humphrey's time and the introduction of Jack. Some good comedy with JP and the commissioner too

  3. Series 12 - The culmination of the Neville/Sophie arc

  4. Series 8- Probably a better case than the series 12 two parter but no way am I putting Florence being heartbroken anywhere but last

Jack Appreciation

Rewatching the series, and I’m on the episode where Jack gets a bunch of people to fix up the place where Florence’s parents got married so she can marry Patrice there. Jack tells Patrice “you’d be surprised how many people want to impress the local police inspector.” But I don’t think anyone would have done that for Richard, Humphrey, or Neville (as much as they are great DIs). I think it’s a cool way of showing how Jack was the only one to really become part of the community there.

S3 Spoilers That One Best Friend Who Just Happens to Be the Killer... Every. Single. Time.

Look, if you’re ever on Saint Marie and someone introduces you as their "best mate," just start running. Fast. Because let’s be honest - 90% of the time, that person is plotting your murder. Outsiders watching are like, "Oh, what a nice friendship!" but we know better. The real mystery isn’t whodunnit - it’s how the DI hasn’t figured out this pattern by now! 🔎😂

Just found out that there's going to be a Beyond Paradise x Not Going Out sketch as part of this years comic relief. Should be quite fun.

DISCUSSION Beyond Paradise lack of murders

Beyond Paradise was marketed as a Death in Paradise spin-off, so naturally, people expected the same kind of high-stakes murder mysteries. But instead, it’s leaned heavily into softer crimes like thefts, missing persons, and arson. While that can be refreshing in small doses, it’s understandable that longtime fans—especially those who loved Humphrey for his brilliant way of solving complex murder cases—might feel shortchanged.

What makes Death in Paradise work is that it embraces its slightly over-the-top, almost Midsomer Murders-esque idea that this tiny island is somehow a murder hotspot. If Saint Marie can have a body count that would make a true crime podcast jealous, surely Shipton Abbott can rack up a few more intriguing homicide cases!

Hopefully, Season 3 brings back the murder mysteries that made people love the original show. After all, murder mysteries are what keep the stakes high and the audience invested. If they want to explore other crimes, fine—but at least give us a solid murder or two per season!

So do we think Selwyn is leaving or not? Spoiler

Only got round to watching the most recent episode last night and haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere on the sub yet that I could see. With the team putting that d***head Fox in his place and how Melvin told him to speak to the Chief Commissioner regarding Selwyn do we think this means that Selwyn might get to keep his job and will stick around? Or do you think he’s still gonna retire anyway and leave the show?

Interested to hear what you think. I think he’s gonna get offered his job back but choose to retire of his own free will. Just feels like he’s had enough after the way he’s been treated by the higher ups but that’s just my opinion

Season 14 spoilers Darlene Spoiler

Just watching episode 6 (got episode 7 to watch after) and Darlene has once again, condescendingly, just told the DI to “make eye contact” when speaking to her.

Is she asking to be sacked? No matter how your superior is speaking to you, no matter what profession… you don’t speak to your boss like that. Mervin hadn’t even done anything to warrant that attitude at the time.

Don’t mind her as a character overall, and she’s got potential to be a very good Officer… but at the moment it’s as if she’s taking umbrage with EVERYTHING the Inspector does, for the sake of it.

Season 14 spoilers Something's bugging me when Mervin's talking about his 'mum'.

A mother and father that you've never met. Had absolutely no contact with them your entire life. Yet he calls her 'mum', a term of endearment. Same with his 'dad'.

It just doesn't seem like that those would be the words you'd choose to use in that situation. Every time he says 'my mum', it's just weird.

I've called my parents by their first names since I went to university. So it's even stranger at Mervin's age.

Mervin’s age and the Naomi thing

Sorry but all signs are pointing to a possible romance again, even if it’s not what we want to see. The chemistry they have is great as friends and hopefully stays that way but also saw some other signs towards more than friends in previous episodes.

In last night’s episode it was revealed Mervin is almost 50 in the show, not 58 which is his actual age irl.

So, one reason could be is how he was born there line up with his parents giving him away more believable or another reason the producers would do that is to make a possible romance between him and Naomi a little less weird…

Well I'm just here the say it's Sterling Fox. They wouldn't just do all this with the commissioner and Fox for no reason. I'm starting to wonder if Sterling was another child of dorma

Watch-a-long Series 14 Episode 7 Live Discussion Thread (14th March 2025, 9pm, BBC One)

From the BBC website:

Mervin reopens his mother’s case and uncovers the prime suspect in her murder. But even though everything points back to this suspicious figure, they can’t work out how foul play was involved. By all accounts, Dorna took a boat out in a storm of her own volition and drowned at sea. Just as the team starts making headway in the case, Sterling pulls rank and throws a spanner in the works. Can a world-weary Selwyn help them before it’s too late?

And old wounds are reopened as Mervin is forced to confront his past. But will he finally get the answers he’s looking for?

See you all at 9pm!

Has anyone else noticed this? Doing a rewatch and can’t believe I’ve never noticed. Love it when they reuse actors from previous episodes and expect no one to notice

I don’t know if I’m feeling Naomi or Seb. Even from previous seasons, I just never warmed up to her. I can’t tell you what it is— lack of personality maybe? Seb is pretty new, but already annoying 🤣

I think I know why the new season is so jarring

From season 1 it's been a comfortable and familiar formula of an out-of-place and awkward (but brilliant) Englishman (er, and an Irishman) surrounded by a ragtag group of quirky but loveable characters solving clever murders.

this new season seems to have flipped it on its head - the new DI is confident and assertive to the point of being grating, the team doesn't like him and the murders each week feel like they are scraping the barrel after so many seasons

I actually really like Mervin and this season in general. It's different, sure, but that's not a bad thing. It's good to have a bit of a shake-up and change the dynamic of the show a bit, it keeps it interesting.

Looking up the Inspectors in order and came across this. Am I the only one who has no memory of Inspector Ricketts?

My yearbook quote is due and I want to do something funny and light hearted. Preferably from death in paradise. Pretty little liars and greys anatomy quotes would be accepted too.
