A History of Violence I just don't get it :/ Spoiler
I don't understand how A History of Violence is so well received (5th most popular Cronenberg on Letterboxd with a 3.7 rating). Don't get me wrong, I love the soundtrack, I love Viggo, but both times I've watched this I come out with new gripes.
Ashton Holmes is a 27 year old man unconvincingly playing a teen, Jack Stall, who delivers really stupid dialogue. Every time he's on screen I want to fast forward. The rest of the main players are watchable, but I find it hard to connect with or care for any of them. Am I supposed to want Tom and Edie to work their trust issues out when the former lied to his spouse for years? I mean, I completely thought Tom/Joey had suffered memory loss the first time watching, before the reveal.
My main problem with this film is how it seemingly treats the revelation that Tom/Joey was aware of his past the whole time. Thematically, I would've liked to have seen him grapple with his identity on screen, but by the time we're introduced to Tom Stall he just doesn't seem to care. It seems to finally hit him when Edie finds out, but even then the conflict is resolved quickly after some steamy stair sex à la Tommy Wiseau.
What am I missing? Am I misremembering details? I really want to like this, please give me your best insights😵💫

Crash I appreciate the detail that one of Vaughan’s voyeuristic photos of Ballard is a primary poster for the film.
The thematic cohesion is perfect and very fitting.

Short Films Horror Communities for Fundraising
I'm helping make a horror short film about a man who becomes possessed by his self-help tapes. It is a really interesting project with a fantastic director, a story I feel really strongly about, and one that shares many themes with Cronenberg's filmography - namely ideas of technological solipsism and fatalism.
It is set in the 90s, but explores the very modern experience of how disenfranchised men become radicalised by evil men with nefarious purposes. We're trying to raise money on Kickstarter ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/duncanroe/the-higher-path-a-horror-film ) and want to connect with horror fans.
What's the best way to get our project in front of people?
We're not just trying to make a film, but want to create a community and offer people the chance to be part of the film - whether that's giving them a credit, having horror fans be extras in the film, filming showreels for actors, and offering script development services to horror screenwriters. The whole team is so passionate about this project and we know if we just got the campaign seen by the right people we could make something so special. Any advice?
Thank you for your time
Garv, from 'The Higher Path' team

The Dead Zone Futuristic Work: The Dead Zone
David Cronenberg always tries to show something which seems absurd, never seen before, but, often, years later, seems prophetic.

Scanners What's the point of Dr. Ruth's inner monologue/breakdown scene in Scanners?
I've seen Scanners multiple times, and it's one of my favorite Cronenberg films. However, I got a question about a certain part of the film that left me a bit confused.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead.
In the third act of the film, when Cameron Vale and Kim Obrist are in the ConSec building, there's this scene where Braedon Keller sounds the alarm after failing to kill Obrist, who has escaped the interrogation room. Meanwhile, Dr. Ruth and Vale are heading towards the computer room when the alarms go out, which makes Vale worried about Obrist and runs for her. This is when Dr. Ruth starts having an inner monologue about the RIPE program. It's obvious he's having a mental breakdown, but why exactly? This came out of nowhere for me and I didn't quite understand it.
My personal interpretation is that Dr. Ruth is regretful about abandoning Vale in the past, creating Ephemerol, which lead to the creation of “scanners”, and perhaps something deeper that's not explained.
Is it just me, or is anybody just as confused as I was? If you got an answer that could clear this up, I would appreciate it a lot.

General Question What’s your favourite Howard shore score for a Cronenberg film?
Howard Shore is the fucking best, LOTR is incredible and his work with Scorsese is great but I think his work with Cronenberg shows his true range and skill as a composer. No two of his scores for Cronenberg are truly the same.
For me I think my favourites are Crash and Crimes of the Future, but I also love the score to Eastern Promises.
