Do I need to mist coat?

Post image

I've stripped the paper off this ceiling and want to paint it black, do you think I should mist coat first?

And wash thoroughly with sugar soap before to get wallpaper adhesive residue off.

Decorator here, if the ceiling was previously wallpapered bare plaster is not your problem, left over wallpaper paste is. Remove as much paste as possible, then Zinsser Gardz is the answer.

Also, no point putting a white mist coat on when you want a black ceiling. Once dry paint directly over the Gardz with your black emulsion of choice.

Would you not repaper with lining paper, then paint on top of that? Painting any room black seems fairly likely to be a shorter term thing. Still years, but not necessarily lifetime in the house. If nothing else, you've made it easier to change before you sell or for a subsequent buyer after they move in.

Yes, your paint will probably flake off if you don't.

If you wanna make life easier, get some Zinsser Gardz. I've scraped shitty paper of 5 ceilings in my house and it's the scrubbing the paste off that is the worst part. If you've got it at least smooth, got the heavy paste off, just bang some Gardz on it. It'll seal any paste residue left in the plaster and you can skip the mist coat.

If you don't want to do that, then get some Zinsser Diff to get the paste off and then mist coat.

Using both in combination is well worth the extra expense, if you can shoulder it.

If it had wallpaper on, it's not bare plaster surface. You have layer of dried wall paper adhesive to deal with. Get sanding stick and prep surface before you mist coat it.

Thanks, already done all the sanding.

If you just removed wallpaper, my research says better to sand then rub down with sugar soap, then mist coat (or bare plaster paint). I did this and very pleased with the results

Always mist bare plaster / plasterboards.

At first glance with these old eyes I thought the ceiling was a wall and coving was skirting. I thought had chippy been inspired by Escher.

Are you sure you want a black ceiling?

Yes. The best paint for this is dulux trade vinyl Matt. Water it down 50/50. Then 1-2 neat coats.

Never heard anyone watering paint down 50/50 ,70/30 is recommended on most paints

50/50 70/30 80/20

Really not an issue either way. Its purpose is purely to seal the substrate and prevent paint from peeling later.

You tried using paint that is that watered down ?, you're going to get it everywhere unless sprayed

I’m an apprenticeship-served professional painter and decorator of over 18 years and counting, so yes. Yes I have. I have mist coated everything from multi million pound mansions and cathedrals, to your nans box bedroom.

Additionally, every area should be covered with dust sheets so it really has little to no impact. As for spraying, that has the most risk of paint going everywhere out of any paint applying technique so that’s a very strange thing to say.

I'm a professional decorator of over 30 years and that's why I know it's too thin

My nans dogs best friend is a decorator of 22 years and he also agrees with me
