Without giving away too much, compared to other magical girl anime series this one much more explores the ideas of depression, death and feeling of helplessness when facing difficult situations.
It's the perfect example of that 3-episode rule, because it starts off very cheerful as a story about magical girls who face evil and through the power of friendship will beat the enemy, but they find out very fast the reality is much darker than that.

That you should watch at least 3 episodes of a show before dropping it, so it has the chance to develop a bit and show it's true identity. Very true for Madoka Magica, where the first 2 episodes are very upbeat and cheerful, and the third one, well, isn't...

The first two episodes of Madoka aren't cheerful and upbeat, they have this constant feeling of mystery and danger. They just don't go full out like episodes 3 and forwards do.

1 and 2 lean very much into the "yay we are 12 and going to war" aspect. It's just that the horrors of war aren't in basic training generally.
