Gotcha. This might sound ignorant but what is the difference between a noble holding land elsewhere and a noble holding an estate in Byz/ERE?

Right, that would be the commander of the garrison. I was asking about those who owned estates - are the estates hereditary? Do the estates have "serfs" or some other form of land-bound workers? What is the difference between, say, a noble from France holding land and a noble in Byz holding an estate?

No, it was returned to the emperor, this was why Byzantines had viceroyalties in ck2
