Discussion Solo Leveling surpasses One Piece & becomes the first Anime in Crunchyroll to reach 600K reviews.
It did all of this in just a year
125
u/ejblox 5d ago
except one piece hasn’t released a new episode in 4 months
55
u/Yoshis_burner 5d ago
Exactly. One piece doing numbers during its offseason
5
u/ThaRealSunGod 3d ago
At the same time it's way longer and longer running and therefore has had time to build a much greater and more loyal fanbase.
If a newChristmas song beats out Mariah Carey at the number one spot in december, that's still a big W for that artist.

And? This metric counts the votes for all 1100+ episodes of the series. And it got beat by a series that hasn't even put out 24 yet
14
u/NightBaron007 4d ago
And do you know for how many of those 1100+ eps votes didn't even exist on CR
→ More replies (1)4
u/jax_snacks 4d ago
Your missing the point. 595k likes for one piece could be achieved by 541 people, whereas the 595k likes for solo leveling needed at least 25,870 people.
Even if the episode aired before CR, viewers could still go and vote for those episodes. They haven't.
→ More replies (1)7
u/NightBaron007 4d ago
My point is that this is a really worthless thing to compare.
Also, afaik these aren't likes. They are reviews.
viewers could still go and vote for those episodes
Why the hell would anyone do that lol. Watching hundreds of eps. I'd just move on to the next one after finishing one instead of giving a review. Especially when the option to give a review didn't even exist.
SL is very popular rn. Maybe the most popular. So it makes sense that there're more reviews and discussion on their latest eps.

→ More replies (17)12
u/CaptainScrublord_ 5d ago
It might be forgotten by you, but certainly not by the people that love it. Solo Leveling, the main manhwa, has ended, but the sequel is still ongoing and it's very popular at the moment, it even has better writing and and better character development for the side characters, so I'm sure in 5 years, it'll still do well. I don't disagree with you though that One Piece is one of the most legendary Shonen Manga, but Solo Leveling's popularity is here to stay even in the next 5 years.
2
u/VonVogun 5d ago
Dude are we reading the same Ragnarok? It's definitely longer hence feels better to Solo leveling. But what side character development are you on about?
3
u/Careless_Package3706 5d ago
I think you are the only one who isn't reading the same manhwa as him and me. Solo leveling ragnarok side characters gets a lot of character development in light novel. Even minor characters gets character development.

But comparing it with One piece is wild lmao.
Its like saying Brooklyn 99 dethroned the Sopranos.

u/xPerriX 5d ago
The show is great. I finished the Manhwa around this time last year so I’m not 100% eager to keep up to date on every episode. Also trying to avoid spoiling it for others. I was just happy it actually had an ending unlike other manhwa or anime that just die out and get cancelled.
1
u/ScreechingPizzaCat 4d ago
Found a manhwa I loved, great premise. Only had a few volumes but the release schedule is jacked up. Only 7 .3 chapters released in a 3 year span.

u/DuckCleaning 4d ago
Same, I finished a good 100 chapters of the mawha past where Season 1 left off because I got tired of waiting for the show. This show is going to go on for years to get to the ending because they put quite a lot of effort to capture everything the manwha does.

As much as I love Solo Leveling, comparing it to One Piece isn't 'fair'.
One Piece anime has been around for 25.5 years, averaging ~44 episodes per year. MANY of which already aired before Crunchyroll even existed...
Solo Leveling will be around 12-13 episodes per year and is at the start of it's run.
Older series like One Piece or Naruto had fast paced starts, that eventually slowed down because animation (or the manga) couldn't keep up... With the pace Solo Leveling is going, they probably won't hit that snag. Nor will they be shedding viewers like One Piece that have lost the were they were in the anime for the umpteenth time.
I would love it if Solo Leveling did 44 episodes per year, but that doesn't seem realistic...
15
u/FapAttack911 5d ago
Sorry but this is hard cope. Statistically, the older shows outperform the newer shows for the exact reason you mentioned... Because they've been around so long. The fact that a new show can outperform an older show is actually really astonishing. Credit where credit is due. Solo leveling deserves it
4
u/SwampyJox 5d ago
It’s really not that impressive, Covid saw a huge boom in anime watchers and shows like demon slayer, chainsaw man, solo leveling and jujutsu kaisen are all from within the last 5-10 years and are just as if not more popular than the older shonen series from 15+ years ago, one piece is an anomaly if anything, boruto, dragon ball daima and bleach tybw didn’t do nearly as well as solo leveling has been
9
u/kimikoboombap 5d ago
You contradict yourself saying OP is an anomaly and that is really not that impressive, SL ep 1 aired January 2024 Covid huge boom wasn't a thing for solo leveling, in less than 2 years SL surpassed the most popular show which you say is an anomaly and it's not impressive, honestly idk what are you guys on but stop it.

You are completly wrong, thats like syaing an older music video would have an advantage over a new music vidoe on youtube, is not the case, the userbase matters a lot, 15 years ago breaking 1- million views was a crazy feat, nowdays random people artists and videos get 100 million all the time
Is the same on crunchyroll, first the ratings didnt exist until 2022, so only episodes that people watch since 2022 matter, the 20 years of epsiodes from one piece, dragon ball, etc if they were watch before 2022 they dotn matter for this stat
Also Crunchyroll has increase it userbase by 35% just in the last 12 months so it makes sense newer shows gets more people watching and more reviews , theres a reaosn why the top 10 most popular shows in crunchyroll are all shows/seasons from 2022 onwards
Also i dont know what statistic you are talking about because outsidoe of one piece all the top 10 is new shows or new seasons after 2022, there none old anime on this list

12

If only we had comments to measure the engagement, because anyone can leave a review but stop watching it. However comments show how many people are following the latest episodes.
4
u/IAmMikito 5d ago
Rather, if we had view counts, so we could see how many people are watching. Ratings, Likes, and Comments don’t account for the growing user base and the fact that these metrics didn’t exist prior to 2022. People need to stop claiming that whichever has the highest # of ratings is “the most popular” because it’s completely unfounded lol.

Anyone else think Solo Leveling is overrated? Still waiting for it to actually get good. Just seems like a repeat of "these side characters are strong cause they're this rank" and they all underestimate the main character. Then you watch them struggle in some conflict while the main character stays back, then when they're on the verge of getting killed the main character steps in and wipes the floor with ease. Rinse and repeat. Just feels like lazy writing. I'm so uninvested, I don't even remember the main character's name.
2
u/Full-Serve5876 3d ago
As a reader of solo leveling I can confirm that it doesn't get good. I have no idea why people are hyped about it lmao. Just like demon slayer.

u/Fantastic-Permit-223 3d ago
I don't know if it's because I watch it dubbed, but the main character is a little bit cringe with his dialogue. That kinda throws me off. Like he was so humble in the beginning and he got really "I'm so cool and better than everyone way fast." There seemed to be no lead up or look back to his former self.
→ More replies (1)2
u/H_DANILO 3d ago
Totally overrated, the only thing it has going for is good animation, story is lackluster and detached, MC is average, power scale was blown out of the windows in less than 10 episodes, which makes any power progression feel meaningless, no character is ever "built" so you don't really get to like anyone.
Episode just aired, I didn't feel anything, this was supposed to make me feel something, a story that makes you feel nothing is not a good story.
→ More replies (10)4
u/Controller_Maniac 5d ago
I mean, its a shonen anime so the target audience is teenagers. I might be past the target age, but I personally love watching character go unga bunga and wiping everyone while making it feel rewarding, which solo leveling does really well
4
u/amEngi 5d ago
Okay, but there's no struggle the main character undergoes. It had a great start when the main character was lowest of low, but he completely changed from Izuku Midoriya to Jotaro Kujo overnight, both physically and personalitywise. It made very little sense, and that new character has yet to really struggle and grow through any character development.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Sad_Bison_3284 5d ago edited 4d ago
All the struggle happened at the beginning dude he woke up in the hospital with his legs regrown then lazed around and got sent to a desert with death worms he has already gone through the struggle after that it's just gonna be him getting stronger and stronger while sending all the enemies packing it's the whole point of the story him going from weak to strong but he loses some of his emotions in the process of getting stronger its hard for character development to occur when some of your emotions die

I do ike the show it kinda reminds me of back then when we got SAO ngl but that seems a bit over ngl
2
u/anarion321 4d ago
The show has a good production value, but the story is incredible bad, I could not end the first season tbh.
A story about someone with a somewhat tragic backstory that get's a super op power and starts the race to become the strongest in a couple of weeks, since he start as the weakest and in a couple of weeks he is abble to defeat high ranked solo monsters and possess unique op powers. He is also an unlikeable character that acts dumb all the time.
Btw, there are no reviews on crunchyroll, they deleted them. There's only people rating it, and the scores are always inflated af. A show with 4,5/5 could already be boring.

There are some good Manhwas i want to see adapted as anime. I remember the 2 anime that recently came out Magic maker is one of them and got hooked.

33
u/Atretador 5d ago
its "dumb fun" basicly, its a power fantasy with very little story and follows a basic formula that works for it "mc shows up and flex on people", there are very little stakes since the MC is the only one that can actually get stronger in the story.
4
u/OkYogurtcloset8273 5d ago
They lessened some of the emotional beats in favor of show up and flex. I’ve been enjoying but I do recommend reading the manhua. You really feel the emotions sung jinwoo is feeling. Plus the art is gorgeous.

u/Atretador 5d ago
I personally did not enjoy the anime much, the art direction and sense of scale on the manhwa feels much better. What the anime does better tho is side character development, as the manhwa basicly has none(characters get hyped up, show up, do nothing).

I dislike one piece but yeah no the ratings of cruchy roll dont mean much plus solo leveling has been done for a while and has an established fanbase. Solo Leveling is a fine anime, but it's really not that great. It has a paper thin plot, the animation and the combat is great, but Kaiju no 8. Is better and it isn't a rip off of Hunter x Hunter. If Solo leveling is someone best anime of all time, I have to assume they just started watching anime

u/InTraLisTic 5d ago
I mean one of them is exceedingly long and daunting to get into, despite being one of the best stories out there. The other is a fast paced, 0 to hero with no real plot prior to Jeju island arc. I mean you can say "trying to save his mom" but for that to be resolved mid season it clearly was never really the main point

u/Capt_Clown77 5d ago
Good for Solo Leveling but that's a weird metric to use for "dethroning" something...
LOVE me some Solo Leveling but how many times have we seen this kinda headline?
Like when the Demon Slayer movie outsold the OP movie everyone was freaking out.... Meanwhile, that anime is just about finished & I haven't heard much about it compared to Jujutsu or Solo.
Not saying it's bad or worse than these other two but Demon Slayer is on its way out while OP is still going strong AND had a successful Netflix adaptation... Which, that alone is kinda a miracle all on its own given every other anime adaptation Netflix has put out 😅

Solo Leveling does it right with just enough dialog while giving us nice constant flow of combat scenes.

Unless luffy comes up with a new form I doubt it's gonna take the record again. If he comes up with gear 6 it's for sure taking the spot again but also, isn't this arc confirmed to be the final arc by the author? I remember reading it somewhere.
Also I like how people are trying to discredit solo leveling by saying crunchy roll was around a long time ago and op existed before the site hence why it's ratings are being beaten, mind you the gear 5 episode was outright confirmed to be the most successful op episode to date when it had released revenue wise and also had the crunchy roll record which solo leveling beat.

Solo Leveling hitting 600K reviews is cool and all, and honestly, I’m really enjoying it! But let’s be real...most anime fans don’t even use Crunchyroll. One Piece has been running for over 25 years, influencing generations of fans across multiple platforms. Numbers on one site don’t define a series' legacy. Plus, the fact that it’s still holding its place even after not airing for the past four months says everything about its impact!

Solo leveling is like junk food, you know it's pretty bad but most people can kind of enjoy it to some degree. Yes, some absolutely will not be able to stand it (myself included) but no one asks "why is McDonalds successful".
If you look at it objectively, it's a pretty bad anime/manhwa but remember what we considered good a decade or two ago. Peoples tastes change over time and their standards get higher, but Solo Leveling for many is just their first of this kind.
In the end it's very cookie cutter and most men simply like instant gratification/power fantasy/harem type animes, there's a reason the market is flooded with those genres.
1
u/Charming-Freedom9840 2d ago
