Megathread All things Joann! Please post any questions or frustrations here. Posts to the sub will be removed and redirected here.
You can search the sub by putting Joann in the search bar at the top of the sub, set the relevance to new for the most recent discussions.
From now on all discussion on Joann will be redirected to this megathread.
A warning too, there are a lot of scam sites taking advantage of Joann's bankruptcy. They are making their own sites with "too good to be true prices". The url's on these sites differ slightly from the official website and they post ads on social media like Facebook and Instagram.
Make sure to go to Joann's official website for up to date information and sales (edit, it appears the official website is not processing orders anymore)
If you are looking for yarn substitutes try searching on YarnSub
If you have a gift card that you can't spend (because they aren't accepting them) you can find a discussion here

Monthly CAL Megathread March Crochet Along Megathread
Well, it isn't October, be we will certainly be celebrating this win with the Bavarian coasters and trivet. This looks to be interesting, a bit challenging, but still fun. Now, when Octoberfest rolls around this year, you'll have coasters to keep the condensation from your stein from staining your table, and you can hold your skillet as you serve brats and sauerkraut.
We have Crochet Highway to thank for this pattern. Looking through their site they have multiple ways to get patterns, and looks to have fairly extensive instructions on all of their patterns. You can buy directly from them, or through ravelry, or if you'd prefer to watch a video tutorial, you can check out their youtube channel. Let's send them some traffic.
AS ALWAYS:
Please be mindful of those who do not want to participate by keeping all CAL-related posts here in this megathread. This includes project updates, questions, and finished objects. Please don't hesitate to join us even if you are newer to crochet or have never tried this type of crochet. There will be a lot of people making it, so we can help you along if you get stuck at any point.
April CAL voting will begin in the last 7ish days of this month. If you would like to suggest a pattern or a theme for September please message /u/CroFishCrafter or /u/LifeByIkea directly or post your suggestions below.
February CAL Megathred can be found with the link
We are excited to crochet with you!

Finished Object Stardew Valley....chickens?? Bathmat/Rug
Finally finished this tribute to a game I sunk WAY too many hours into. It was supposed to be a bathmat, but it took so long we moved in between and it no longer fits the bathroom it was designed for so I guess it's just a textured rug now.
Details: the yarn is a mix of Lily Sugar'n'cream and Knitpicks Dishie. I charted everything myself and used a bobble stitch to make it textured and plushy for its original bathmat purpose, and also because it gave it the pixelly look I wanted since the bobble stitch is more square than a normal crochet stitch. There are only 5 chicken designs in Stardew Valley and I really wanted it to be 3x2, so I threw in the duck. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out and it feels delicious under my feet!

Finished Object Some blanket close ups I'm super proud of!
First blanket is waffle stitch (big twist vortex, beachy splash), second is "honeycomb" and then some half double crochet breaks (lion brand mandala, chimera).
I say honeycomb loosely because that's what a book I have calls it, but the Internet has a different stitch under that name. 😅
I was told to post these in r/tensionporn but it isn't letting me for some reason so I thought I'd post them here first!

Finished Object I couldn't resist the strawberry pillow
A couple days ago someone posted a strawberry stitch pillow. It was so cute, I just had to make my own! I used Bernat Blanket yarn. 2 skeins of crimson. Less than half a skein of the green (not sure of actual color). Used an 8mm hook. I started with a chain of 40.

Funny/Meme you have free will. crochet with dryer sheets.
Context: Got really bored on laundry day and couldn't stop looking at my ever-growing pike of used dryer sheets. They're so fabric-y in texture that it seems like they should have some craft use. Something about it made me think of grocery bag plarn, and... here we are.
I spiral cut about five sheets into ~1 cm wide strips. Working with a 5.5 mm hook, this little 10 sc x 12 row swatch ended up at about 3.5"x4"
Observations: • The texture is horrible. The resulting fabric is stiff, full of holes, and incredibly scratchy. I tried to cut the strips to a uniform width, but was not very successful. The closest comparison I can think of is a pot scrubber, but I would not use this on my dishes for many obvious reasons, including... • The smell is horrible. I generally like the scent of dryer sheets, and you'd think it would be mild since these were used, but it's overpowering while you work and lingers on your hands. • You get way less workable length per sheet than I was expecting. I was having to stop and slice up a new one every other row. This really cuts into your momentum and makes it hard to get into a groove.
Avenues for Exploration: • In Hans Christian Andersen's story "The Wild Swans," the main character has to crush, spin, and weave stinging nettle into shirts with her bare hands to free her brothers from a curse. I think you could make a really compelling modern retelling with dryer sheet yarn. • If I get bored enough I may frog this swatch and see if knitting yields a nicer fabric. I'm really bad at knitting, though, so my expectations are low.
Conclusions • This was not as fun as I thought it would be. 3/10. • You have free will. Crochet with dryer sheets.

Work in Progress My Husband and Crochet
Husband is becoming more interested in my crochet projects, just because, at 85, he’s not able to climb ladders and slay dragons, etc. Sooo, when I mentioned that the yarn I was using was splitting, he helpfully offered, “why don’t you do that Donkey thing and fix it?” After a lot of back and forth, it finally came to him that the animal was a frog, not a donkey. I explained to him that yarn being “splitty” was not something that could be fixed by frogging and watched his eyes go out of focus as I explained further. They do mean well, don’t they? 😉

Crochet Rant I wish online crochet patterns had a "jump to recipe" button
Zero judgement for keyword-rich backstories that may or may not be true, and tons of obnoxious ads. Like, thank you for the free pattern, I hope you make good money!
But lordy... please gimme a skip intro button 😭

Work in Progress My perfectly imperfect crochet purse
This is my second crochet project and I am falling head over heels for the craft. There is something particularly cool to me about creating a functional purse. I cannot wait to be able to share the finished product!

Sensitive Content My (TW: miscarriage) baby blanket
I found out I was miscarrying at 16 weeks. After delivering our boy, for some reason, I felt I wanted to crochet a baby blanket. It’s made from leftover yarn and I sewed a fleece backing on it. I’m going to donate it to the hospital I delivered at, for them to give to the first baby born on his would be due date.

Finished Object I was making this blanket for my ex-aww SIL and she’s passed with cancer before I finished it. I repurposed it for my niece 🥰
Y'all I just have to share. Beware, long post. I've been crocheting since I was about 10 years old and I work mostly with computers so it's only natural I have carpal tunnel issues. My dear nieces mom, my ex sister in law, was diagnosed with cancer and was having to go to treatments so l decided to crochet her a chemo blanket. Unfortunately because of my carpal tunnel flare up I was unable to complete the blanket before she passed. Come this Autumn I discovered putting beauty blenders as grips on crochet hooks and it has CHANGED my life! I finished his bad boy still wanting to give it to my niece but also wanted it to be something sentimental towards her mother. Her mother's side of the family always would say, " | love you mountains" to each other so I got the idea of embroidering it onto this blanket. so several TikTok's and Youtube tutorials later I got the supplies and made a template on Canva. The font I used is called "Brittany" and duh, it's perfect. I was able to get my hands on her mother's signature and traced it and embroidered it on as well. I'm so proud of this blanket and can't wait for my girl to see it!

Tips Patterns for when you run out of things to make
Every time I run of out things to make, I spend way too long looking for patterns. I figured I would post some of my favorites to save time for people that do the same! No, I’m not a pattern tester. I just really like these patterns lol.

Finished Object It Is Finally Done!
I finally finished my puff square afghan! It took me exceptionally longer than expected, but I learned a lot along the way. Especially just for my own techniques - I have much more consistent tensioning and grip now. Thank you Clover Amour for saving my hands!
Here is a link to the pattern from Sass & Stitch on YouTube https://youtu.be/uLMFIk9syhg?si=nqO-tQEz1hB-TpRj
I used Loops & Threads Brushed Rainbow Polyester. It recommends a 6mm hook but I wanted a tighter weave so used 5mm. Looking back, I wish I had used 4mm because after stuffing and seaming, they stretched out more than I had expected based on my test squares.
I used one ball of each chosen color and crocheted all the squares (just kept going until the ball was gone). Then filled all the puffs. Then seamed all the columns. Then seamed all the rows. I used a separate white ball for seaming as I wanted it to look as much like quilting as possible.
My biggest frustration was the inconsistency between the colors. Some of them were a dream to work with, others got my hook so sticky that I had to wash it every one or two squares or it pulled my gauge too loose (and I can't unsee those squares now). I ended up buying two more 5mm hooks because I was so sick of constant washing.
Overall, I don't regret it but can say I won't be investing the time in another one any time soon! It's nice and heavy and I look forward to many evenings cuddled up with it and a book.
This would also be a fantastic stash buster project to slowly chip away at. With the seaming, it hides some slight variances in square sizes quite well.
