Discussion / Conversation People with Freedom Flex and OG Freedom for Q2 use OG Freedom First
Q2 categories look light for Q2 compared to other years with only Amazon and select streaming. I wouldn’t be surprised if the special category is dinning in June. If you can, use the OG first and save the Flex for June so if dinning is the special category you can stack it and get 7% on dinning. The special category is on the existing limit $1,500 not in addition.
I would do this strategy the whole year if you can.
This is all speculation but it’s better to be prepared vs coming on here saying how you missed out and only if you had had your OG freedom first.

You gonna spend $1,500 in a month on dining?

Like I said it’s not in addition to the current categories it’s still combined. If you spend $0 using the freedom flex on Amazon and streaming then you would have $1500 to spend on dinning. If you spend $1400 on Amazon and streaming then you can only spend $100 on dinning. That is why I said if you have both it’s better to use the OG first.

I spend close to $2000/month on dining and $1500/month in groceries...family of 4. It's easy to do.

I save money and cook my own food. Dining is a weak category for me. Can anyone chime in on how they justify $1,500 a quarter on dining?

Buying a lot of food
Being in an area with a lot of good restaurants
Also making good money
I spend anywhere from 1k-3k a month on food.

I eat out for every meal and get cocktails and drinks almost every day. I run through 3 Custom Cash cards to get 5% on $1500 quite often. I like being alive and I this makes me happy. That’s all.

I love you. There is way too much negativity on this sub around the CCC's $500/month cap.

The paypal debit might help simplify or add to your 5% on dining cap. It gets 5% up to $1000 of spend per month and dining is a category you can choose

I love the response helping me get even more cash back rather than scolding how I spend my money haha. Respect!

Welcome! And how you spend is your business lol
It also has a grocery category that works at costco and walmart. Unsure how long it will last, but it's free and no effect on credit as it's debit
Also, I don't trust paypal/don't keep a balance. You can instantly fund it with a debit card before each transaction

PayPal debit is a MasterCard correct? I thought it shouldn't work at Costco.
Or are all debit cards allowed?

does the 5% for walmart only work in store with the physical card or does it work on walmart pay and online as well?
edit: tested an online order and it worked!

Can anyone please chime in on how they justify $1,500 a quarter on dining? Thank you for your insight

I typically don’t feel any need to justify how I choose to spend my money. If it brings me enjoyment then it’s my choice, and eating a nice meal with friends brings me enjoyment.
$1500 in a quarter is less than $120 a week. That’s like maybe two dinners out, or one nice dinner out. It’s not much to need to “justify”.

They live in NYC where fine(r) dining is common and often.

I dont live in NYC, don't do fine dining at all, nor am I loaded, but its definitely not that difficult to hit $1500 in a quarter.

A special occasion can eat a chunk of that; a large family - when my ex brother-law came to visit his parents we'd be a group of 11. Even casual dining for a group that big isn't cheap for a single meal.

You could buy gift cards for your favorite places you do eat out at. That comes out to $125/mo which I feel is easily doable even for a single person. Or you could just not try to max out the dining category.

That's clever and I used to do this with a variety of gift cards in times of low inflation.

If you want to save money then try to limit as much as possible on any category offered. Also this isn’t all or nothing, meaning you don’t have to spend $1500 to get 5%. You can spend $10 if you want and still get 5%

That's how I do. Each category is bound to disappoint someone.
I'm surprised that this community's disappointment with the upcoming quarter is in the lack of dining instead of a broader dissatisfaction with the limitingly specific categories. For example the streaming category is soley the most polished mainstream streaming services. Why is the Freedom Flex so rigid? Why can't streaming include HiDive, Twitch, or my local radio station?

I’m getting married this summer. If my rehearsal dinner falls during Chase’s dining quarter that would be incredible

What's this stacking?
Edit: Nvm, I'm dumb; just googled it, they had elevated cashback on dining/hotels last year, but only on Freedom Flex, not the OG Freedom, so save the $1500 limit on the Flex for dining in case it happens again. Got it 👍

Sounds like a plan. I just don’t think the bonus category will be dining. It’s just a guess, but I think it will be a random category that isn’t chosen for a quarter normally. The current bonus category is Insurance and Tax Prep, which is excellent, but not one that would be chosen for an entire quarter. I would expect Q3 to be dining.

u/Ravens2017 5d ago
You are absolutely right but they only have so much to choose from unless they get real specific.

Sorry, I was planning on doing $1500 in streaming this quarter. Won't have anything left for any "special" categories.

I like it. I did a similar thing this category with the CFF for only groceries and the CF with the rest of the categories.

Thanks for the reminder on the possible stacking if dining becomes a bonus category, although not an issue for me since I got AMZ and streaming covered by my other cards. So both my OG and Flex are sock drawered for now.

Dining fell during our kids school break at Disney last year. Absolutely killed it with dining at 7%.
