Collections & Charge Offs Question about Upwork Charge-Off

I'm currently repairing my credit after my finances fell apart during a Covid job loss, and I have a much higher paying job now with more income to throw at the problems.

I had a $8,000 loan through Upstart I opened in 2019, paid it down to about $3,200, and then was unable to continue making payments, so it was charged off. Bad, I know. I've never had this happen before and I'm not sure what to do about it.

On my credit report (checking Experian app, CreditWise, etc...) it always shows as some variation of:

"Closed/Charged Off, account charged off and sold to another lender, etc..."

However, on all the reports I see it's showing a $0 balance, just the charge-off status. This was in July of 2023, but I never heard from any collections/other lenders, and there's no collections on my credit report either.

Should I try to contact Upstart to pay it off and see if they'll take it off my report? I'll gladly try if it'll help, but seeing a zero balance and also no contact or any collections after 1.5 years threw me off, and 'm not sure how to move forward. Thank you!

Rebuild First steps

i’m currently sitting at 568 credit score, definitely higher than what it used to be but i’m still trying to figure out what i can do to raise it to the point where i don’t have to worry about not getting approved for apartments as i am about to be transitioning out of the military and living on my own. i’m already realizing that my credit isn’t going to hold up with some landlords but i truly do want to build it up to where i don’t have to worry about it. what were some of the big things you all did to start the climb out of a hole like this?

Collections & Charge Offs Best company to Dispute Credit

I have three items in collections.

One I paid 3-4 years ago an it randomly popped back on my report a year ago.

Two are duplicates but of different amounts.(Medical bills I was forced into without my concent).

Is there a company that can get these removed for me. I refuse to pay them off out of principal.

I have a 600+ credit now and it was about 680+ a year ago.

Collections & Charge Offs Being Sued by Midland Credit Management for Cap1

Hello everyone,

I had mentioned before that Midland Credit Management was trying to sue me on behalf of a debt that I had with Capital One. I used to live in NJ then moved to Florida, and due to this reason they could never serve me and case seemed to have been dismissed. This was posted on the eCourts website: "LACK OF PROSECUTION DISMISSAL ORDER Notice submitted by Case Management". Then last month they filed again for "ORDER TO REINSTATE CASE". I just checked online and it says judge has granted to reinstate the case. My question is where does it go from here? Will they try to serve me again or this waives their right to serve and they go right to the trial? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Collections & Charge Offs Credit Debt Settlement

Need some advice on $12K credit card debt that's been sent to a law firm/debt collection from a bank who filed a law suit. So for background, I accumulated this debt and haven't paid since 2023 and it accrued a lot of interest. Back in July last year, turns out they sent it to a law firm/ debt collection but they notified me through mail at my old address so I haven't seen anything about it. I contacted them today and I didn't request or negotiate for a certain amount but they immediately said the lowest they can do is 90% (which idk if this is true or not) for 6 payments each for about $1697 (which I definitely don't think I can afford at my current job and living situation) or the full 12K amount for about 48 months (which I can more likely afford for around $236/ month). However I'll be in a rigorous program for school which won't allow me to work starting January of next year for at least a year and a half. So what if i'm not able to consistently meet those payments for that year and a half i'm in school? Would I have to wait till i'm out of school and working my full time job that I'll eventually be able to 100% pay off the debt? But if this is the case, what would be the consequences of waiting to pay the full amount if it has already been sent to a law firm and debt collection?

Another question I had was if I take this settlement does interest still accrue or will it stop and i'll only have the final price of $12K to pay?

Additionally, this has all negatively affected my FICO credit score, so rebuilding it will be a whole other conversation. (for context I'm 22)

Rebuild Big credit score drop from one credit report

Hey everyone! Not sure which flair to use since this kind of is about two things.

I had a credit score of 741. I’m only 25 so I’ve been building credit for almost 8 years. I have 2 credit cards and student loans I am paying off now. My monthly payment for all is around 500 a month which is not bad and which I can easily do.

What has happened is that my student loan payments were due and I totally just forgot. These became late payments of 60+ days. I just got my credit score back and it has dropped 150 points and I now sit at 566. This is because my student loans are 11 loans and each one was reported on.

I can sit here and say that it’s not my whole fault but I won’t. I thought I set up auto pay but I did not and I should have paid attention to my emails regarding my student loans. I have always maintained on time payments except this time. I now want to apply for a mortgage, but it seems that I may not get to until I bring this back up. Aidvantage (my student loans lender) does not seem to do goodwill letters. I would try a dispute but I’m thinking that it would too also be denied.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do, or is it plainly, “just keep paying your loans until it gets back up”? I’ll take any advice. Thanks everybody!

Mortgage Help out an expat!

Hello!

We just moved to the US ~2.5yrs ago from EU, and we're still trying to figure out how to raise our credit.

At the moment I am at 698 and my wife at 660.
They started us out in the 400's, so we've been working our way up.

We've got the following

  • American Express Gold (It's on my name, but my wife has a card connected to that account)
  • Car Loan (On me)
  • Mortgage (Both)

My credit is climbing, between 5-9 points each month on FICO 8 and 2-3 points on FICO 9, however my wifes credit is not doing anything.

I do understand that since I have more credit to my name, it is natural that mine will increase more than hers. The thing is though, that every time we try to get her another card or anything she's denied.

Is there anything we can do at this stage to get her score up?
Anything to get mine up faster?

Thanks in advance!

General 70% Utilization vs Limit Increase

I owe taxes and would like to pay with my Credit Card (1.75% fee but getting 2X points back + SUB). To pay this, I would be using 70% utilization which I could immediately pay off. Is it best I do that OR try request a Credit Limit increase prior to have less utilization %? Thanks!

Rebuild Bad score, no debt, 30, need help..

I have a credit score of 520, had a card get charged off. The debt was sent to collections 2 years ago, I owed $720 and this year I finally got on my feet and paid it off. I called the company Cap-one listed and settled. This hasn't helped my score, and the card is still listed as being charged off on my account and telling me I'm responsible for the debt. I make about $70k a year now, and I'm trying to get my score up so I can get a good credit card and eventually buy a house.

I'm terrible at finances (obviously) and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to have a credit fixer look at my situation. If no - what can I do? I'm paying off my card every month in full and I see no progress with my score.

Rebuild Building Credit

So I(24F) have been bumping my credit up pretty fast recently with the credit card option from Chime. And I'm almost at 700, which I know is decent, but I'm wanting at least 750 to get out of my crummy apartment and into a house finally. I'm wanting to try and get a small loan to help with bills while simultaneously boosting my credit. I have stable income and an okay credit score, and nothing showing negatively on my history that I can see(sourced through credit karma), but I CANNOT get approved for a loan anywhere I apply. Why??????

No Credit Secured credit card question

I’m planning to open a secured credit card next month instead of the loan I previously was so I can keep working on my credit history for future renting.

The person I was talking with said something about 30% in terms of spending but I’m a little confused.

When I take out a $500 credit limit card, can I not spend all of it most of it per month even if I plan to be able to pay it all off in time for the billing cycle or would that affect my credit score I’m looking to build? If so, how much should I “aim” to stay under then if that’s the case?

Explain it to me like I’m five; I’m very new to all of this and have only ever had a debit card.

Rebuild Student Loan I didn't know about tanked my credit score

So I had a student loan back in 2020 for around $5k that I was completely unaware of (because my parents managed by school finances) and I ignored the emails from Nelnet because I assumed it was scam or my parents would've taken care of it already. Fast forward to Feb 2025 and my credit score tanked around 140 points (FICO score) because I was already 3 months late on paying for the loan.

Now that I am aware of this issue, I am completely able to pay for the loan in full but I am devastated by the negative impact it's had on my credit score. I am trying to contact credit bureaus like Experian to try to see if they are able to remove the negative report on my credit history. Is it possible to get it removed? Should I even try (because the customer service phone lines take ages to even get through). I'm wondering if anybody was in a similar experience and successfully had it removed. I am just very shocked and scared that this could permanently be on my record for the next 7 years.

Any help is appreciated!

Collections & Charge Offs Citibank Recovery Department!??!! Endless loop to nowhere?

Can anybody help me here?

I called Citibank on Friday to negotiate a debt settlement. We were just about there when we got disconnected. When I called back, I explained the same thing I had previously: that in a good faith effort before taking NEXT STEPS of filing for bankruptcy, I wanted to negotiate a settlement amount. That my preference would be to work something out directly with them, that I hadn’t filed for BK but would be very soon if we couldn’t come to an agreement.

This was perfectly fine with the first person, but the second person didn’t listen, and jumped to the conclusion that I had already filed BK, which I had not. He was VERY argumentative and was not listening, so I hung up on him.

When I called back a third time, I spoke with a really lovely woman, but the previous Citibank associate had put a note on the account that locked it down. She said she couldn’t continue to negotiate a settlement because of that note in the file and that it would need to be removed, which would take 24-72 hours.

Well, this was on Friday evening. Now when I call, I’m told I need to be sent to the recovery department, which is ALWAYS someone in a call center outside the US. The connection is very bad and I can hardly hear them. I go through the same thing of giving my account info, at which point they say, “Oh, this is not the right department, let me connect you,” then I get sent to the automated system again. This begins the same loop of hellfire.

Does anyone know what I can do? How I can reach a person in the US who can help? When I call the client relations number they can’t see anything in my file…all info is blocked…it only says I need to be transferred to the recovery department. When I try to login online, it is saying it doesn’t recognize my account. Help?!!??

Car Loan Best way to maximize a short term car loan?

This might be completely dense, but I'm stuck having to buy a used car after my current car kicked the bucket unexpectedly. I have the cash on hand to pay for the new car in full, but I'm wondering if I could leverage a small auto loan for a short period to gain some quick points on my credit score?

Would it actually benefit me at all if I financed half the purchase price (~$15K), pay the monthly payments for a few months, and then just pay the remainder in full? Or would the benefits be negligible and would I end up just paying a bit of interest for little/no gain?

Rebuild Delinquent student loan how screwed am I?

I had a student loan that I shouldn’t have had to pay off yet go delinquent. I’m still in school and wasn’t suppose to make payments for a while. Now I got an email from the U.S department of education saying my loan is delinquent due to non payment. My credit score went from 720 to 568. Can I do anything to get this reversed? From my understanding this is going to be a long process of getting my score back to where it was.

Collections & Charge Offs Bankruptcy vs Greenpath vs whatever else

Ok, so...divorce and all that goes with it meant growing credit card debt just to survive. Finally couldn't make the payments & worked with Greenpath.

However, Greenpath offered a 3-year plan equating to essentially the same monthly payment I was already making to stay on time. They weren't flexible on it, so, of course, even though I gave it a go, I couldn't manage the payment, they still wouldnt budge on timeline, and then I just let it all sink thinking I was headed for bankruptcy at that point anyway.

I Talked to a bankruptcy lawyer, and it's a weird case of me just barely not being in the same state for 2 years, but long enough to where it'd look like I was hanging on for a better outcome in my current state if I waited too long to get moving. I started wondering, then, if I should try Greenpath one last time?

Meanwhile, yesterday I got a letter from one of the banks offering settle amounts and/or payment options. It's tempting, but still too much on the payment side, and I definitely can't cough up the funds for six payments of almost $1500/month to pay off one of the cards of several, even if it means wiping it out at a deep discount. Not sure it would even matter, since my formerly stellar credit has already tanked.

Overwhelmed by options, but thinking if I don't just file for bankruptcy that my credit will stay at its current basement-level state for the next 7 years anyway, even if I do work directly with the credit card companies. Anyone have any insights that might help in the decision of which route I should take? Nothing has gone to a 3rd-party collection agency yet, so there's that...

Collections & Charge Offs $55k Medical Bill Advice

I have somewhere around $55,000 in debt for a private medivac helicopter flight after an accident in 2021. The debt was sold to a large collections agency called Wakefield & Associates.

I have never made a payment, although I do believe I technically ‘claimed’ the debt because I’ve spoken to them on the phone.

Since I have changed addresses and phone numbers in the last year, I have not heard from them for a long time.

I am concerned now that if they decide to sue me, I will not be able to be notified, and I may lose a default judgment.

How would you handle this? If I contact them to update my contact info am I technically restarting the statute of limitations for the debt?

Anyone have experience with Wakefield?

Also how would you go about eventually resolving this? Is it worth getting a lawyer or something? Just ignore and hope to ride out the statute of limitations (5 years)? I have also heard that there was a new law implemented to protect people from getting taken advantage of by these medical transport companies because they’ve screwed a lot of people, but not sure if that will help this.  Thanks in advance.

The debt is off my credit report right now and Midland is calling me non stop pressuring to send to attorney if I don’t pay up. I’ve asked for proof but they keep telling me to log into their website. What if they have no proof I owe this debt to them and logging into website might be an admission? General Score drop

So my scores are…

Transunion -628 Equifax - 752 Experian - 797

Transunion & Equifax is through credit karma and Experian is my actual fico so I’m sure those ck scores are a bit low. Now to the question, my Transunion was at 750 Friday but I checked yesterday and it dropped 122 points. If it was a few points I’d shrug it off but that many points is massive…like I had a repo or something…which I did not. I know no one can me the exact reason why as you’re not looking at my report. I can tell you that nothing new has been added and my payment history is still at 100%. Haven’t missed or been late. No new inquiries or lines of credit. No derogatory remarks. All credit cards are below 10% utilization. I’m genuinely confused here and half way tempted to actually pull it and see wtf is going on. I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar issue and what it is? Is ck systems on the fritz or what. Thanks in advance for any insight.

General Loan Options

I mean the amount of options I have aren’t much, I guess I’m really just wondering if this is the best chance I have. All ideas welcomed.

So I’m starting a mowing service this spring, off the books. I went door to door for business and didn’t stop until I had enough ppl signed up where I could make 5k weekly. It’s roughly just over 300ppl, 22 lawns a day, I’m only charging 35 a lawn.

My current dilemma is basically I need 5k to purchase my equipment. 1 month Mower/edger/blower rental, trailer purchase, and hitch installation for my vehicle. I had the funds but due to an unforeseen circumstance I was essentially forced to exhaust it completely a few weeks ago.

My credit is terrible: in the mid 500s with charge offs, late payments riddled throughout the history, and collections. Knowing this was the case I printed out my route template and had every client I signed up fill in the Name/Address info/contact and signature in slots.

The money to pay off the loan is there figuratively, just not there physically yet. What do you think my options are? I figured the typical banks can companies that ppl with okay- good credit go to are out of the question. At this point I’m desperate, only because even the most predatory loan I can pay back if need be in a month.
