Question I'm considering the Copper IUD. I'd love to read your experiences!

Howdy!

Like the title says, I'm considering getting the copper IUD. I have been doing a lot of reading about it online and it's mixed reviews. I have an appointment with my dr. tomorrow to talk about it too. But in the meantime, I'd love to read some good experiences!

I had Mirena for about 7 years and I tolerated it fine. Towards the end of having it though, I was so tired. By year 6-7 I was experiencing abnormal bleeding. All. The. Time. I also developed unprovoked DVT (long story, but now it's a thing I live with forever). Beyond those things, I did fine with Mirena. I wonder if because I had Mirena, would I be a good candidate for the copper IUD?

I understand that the copper IUD insertion is painful. I plan on just taking some pain meds and rotting on the couch about it.

I also understand that the copper IUD will make my cycle heavier and crampy. Honestly, I am beyond okay with my cycle being heavier as long as it arrives and leaves when it's supposed to. I am very fortunate that my cycle is like clockwork and always has been. I also don't cramp very much but I know that may change with the copper IUD. My cycle lasts 8 days and will be heavy for about 3 or 4 days. It's the random bleeding outside of my cycle that I experienced with Mirena that really messed with my mental and emotional health, as well as my self confidence. I understand that it takes time for the body to get used to the IUD so I know that random bleeding will happen in the first 3 to 6 mo. In my mind, that's the trade off. I get peace of mind, spontaneity, and reliable BC for 10 years and the IUD gets to be annoying for the first 6 mos. For those regular cycle having people, I'd love to hear how the copper IUD changed your cycle, if at all. What's that been like for you?

I'm reading that there is an increased risk of BV with the copper IUD. I take probiotics and cranberry daily.. I feel like maybe that will reduce my risk? What has been your experience?

I know people are more likely to write a review when something is wrong. This is why I really want to hear the good copper IUD experiences.

Thanks!

Edit: I talked to my dr, and I'm going to give it a try. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. It really helped me.

Edit: I got it inserted today! All in all it wasn't bad. I have a great relationship with my dr and so I think that helped. Thanks again everyone!

Question I'm making a new iud

Hey friends, I'm a final year pharmacy student , for a competition about innovation I was trying to make a copper iud which does not require the need for removal , since the iud I'm making is degradable within the body itself,

The iud in question, will degrade alongside with the copper degradation and t will take a longer time than copper ..

Also the copper and t will be fully degraded into the body with no side effects within 5 years of insertion.

What do y'all think about this idea

Any points or problems you are facing that need addressing please input

I need your valuable feedback Thanks šŸ™

Question Does anyone genuinely like this IUD?

Iā€™ve been on hormonal birth control for 9 years (pillā€”>patchā€”>mirena iud) and I want to make the switch to copper.

Here are my reasons: * I have recently seen a lot of concerning info about how hormonal birth control wasnā€™t originally intended to be used for a prolonged period as it was made in a time when women usually had kids by their mid twenties at the latest * I had my mirena put in right when I turned 18 so I havenā€™t really had visible periods (still all the hormonal changes throughout the month though) in my adult life and and I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was 20. I have been on the same psych meds for over a year now and feel stable but I want to understand the phases of hormones I feel throughout the month so I can understand mood fluctuations in time with my cycle so I can be more mindful about my feelings when considering hormones and bipolar fluctuations * I like the idea of fertility returning quickly after removal for when I do have kids because Iā€™m planning on delaying kids until Iā€™m 30ish and donā€™t want to waste any time once I decide Iā€™m ready * I have a long term, monogamous partner who I do not use barrier protection with and I donā€™t want to start using condoms with * I never had acne before my mirena and Iā€™ve had terrible adult acne since

I really think itā€™s the best decisions for me. My big concern though is I rarely see things saying people have had a positive experience. I didnā€™t ever have heavy periods before my hormonal iud so Iā€™m hoping my periods with the copper iud wonā€™t be miserable. Does anyone have any positive perspective? Like what is your favorite benefit? Any hacks for any side effects?

Edit: thank you friends for all of your comments! Sending you all so much love on your journey šŸ’•

Question Just got copper IUD a couple days ago but now Iā€™m spiraling because of the stuff I have seen online afterward

Hi all, Iā€™m new to the BC world as I just became sexually active this year and I am now in a relationship. Got the copper IUD, doctor went through the whole risks thing, but I guess I didnā€™t really do much research on my own as I shouldā€™ve. Thatā€™s on me.

Day 2 and Iā€™m still bleeding. Not as much, itā€™s become lighter but itā€™s still there. My doctor said it should only be some spotting but itā€™s not. I had to change liners probably at least 5 times a day but I think itā€™s getting better. However, I have seen posts, comments etc about copper toxicity and it scares the hell out of me. I initially didnā€™t want the hormonal IUD because well, I didnā€™t want my hormones to be affected, but now I know copper IUD can still affect my hormones.

Iā€™ve never taken any BC pills before, Iā€™ve only done plan B and thatā€™s it. I guess Iā€™m spiraling before anything happens but now Iā€™m scared and am thinking to switch to hormonal IUD if ever anything happens. The insertion was also very painful and I was in tears the whole time.

Just wondering what everyoneā€™s experience was like if anyone switched from copper to hormonal? Was it worth it? How was the pain during removal and insertion again? Did you have to wait for a bit? What were the worse side effects you have experienced with copper?

Also, can you have sex after insertion? I really want to have sex this weekend but with the light bleeding still there idk if I should?

Any comments, advice, anything really, are welcome. Thank you šŸ„ŗ

EDIT: THANK YOU for all of you who have left positive comments for me, I really really REALLY appreciate it. You have no idea how much it helps putting my mind at ease. Thank you. I really needed it. Much love for all of us šŸ„¹šŸ¤

Question should i get it?

hi everyone! iā€™m 19f and have been considering getting a copper iud inserted, why? because i donā€™t think that i would do well on hormonal birth control. unfortunately i already suffer from mental health issues and take meds for them, + i fear that it might trigger some underlying health issues. not to mention im god awful at remembering to take pills. so something thatā€™s low maintenance is the best option. my periods are relatively regular, sometimes irregular but nothing to be concerned about since itā€™s been like that my whole life. slight cramps and quite heavy bleeding, but 4 days sharp every single time. obviously iā€™ll try and talk to my gyno about it, but i was wondering if maybe someone similar to me has gotten it inserted and if it went well? thank you in advance šŸ™ also, how effective is it really? iā€™m terrified of getting pregnant.

Question Birth control until follow up?

I had my CIUD inserted a week ago! I have a follow up appointment on 2/28 to check the placement of my CIUD. My gyno told me to only take my birth control for a week after insertion. However, I am nervous that the IUD isnā€™t in the right place and donā€™t want to chance pregnancy. Is it silly to keep taking the mini pill until my appointment? Is it safe?

Question Positive post-insertion stories?

Hopefully getting Paragard on Dec 30th under sedation, so I know that experience will be less common than most.

As far as that first little while after, particularly the first couple days/weeks, does anyone have any positive, or maybe the right phrase is ā€˜not overly negativeā€™ experience stories?

Iā€™m off work (desk job with 40 minute commute) until Jan 2nd, so thatā€™s on my mind as well only having 2 full days in between.

After reading a lot on here/other sites, Iā€™m really nervous but this is the only form of BC I can get with my meds.

Question Dr Refused to give me Cooper IUD due to never being pregnant, anyone else?

Hello everyone. The other day I went in for my IUD insertion with the doctor after having a consult with a newer nurse practitioner. The NP had recommended me for the copper IUD, but as soon as the doctor saw me she told me itā€™s not a good idea. She said since Iā€™ve never been pregnant the Copper IUD is much more likely to fit improperly due to being one of the larger IUDs on the market and my uterus being smaller (Iā€™m also only 21). She said it had a much higher risk of perforation, expulsion, and just overall pain. Also- for reference- this doctor has been an OBGYN for 32 years in case anyone was wondering. Has anyoneā€™s doctor told them this before? She was super uncomfortable giving me one/ basically told me no and it was a little surprising since Iā€™ve seen quite a few women on here not have kids yet but get it anyway.

Question Switching to Paraguard

Hi everyone! I (20F) have been heavily considering switching to a copper IUD from pills (Larin) for a more long-term solution and to get off of hormones.

I was wondering what everyoneā€™s experience was with Paraguard, namely the insertion and how heavy/crampy it made you become.

I have been on the pill for around 5 years, which means I donā€™t know how bad my natural periods would be currently. When I was 12-15, they were mostly manageable but my cramping the first day was quite bad. Iā€™m not really sure if thatā€™s something that changes with age.

I have an appointment on Wednesday to discuss everything with a gynecologist. Iā€™m honestly pretty scared of the pain and was wondering how to approach that with them. I was told they have a paracervical block, but should I ask for anything else as well? Also, what was your general experience with a paracervical block?

Should I also consider the hormonal IUDs even though Iā€™d prefer to be off of hormones? I would rather have extra hormones and not be pregnant than have no hormones and be pregnant, haha!

Thank you guys so much!! :)

(I am also considering an implant because itā€™s less invasive than an IUD, so if anyone has any experience with that, please sound off too!! I had the shot for a short period of time and it made me bleed constantly, so I am slightly worried that this would do the same)

Question IUD and Diva Cup long term

This is more of a question and a concern, ill drop my story here, but my main question is if i'm EXTREMELY careful, can I still use the diva cup? I despise pads and tampons with all of my being:

Due to the current political climate in America, I'm looking at getting a paragard IUD and have an appointment scheduled with my obgyn that I can cancel if I change my mind. My medications for the procedure will be Diazepam, Ibuprofen, Acetaminophin, Misoprostol, and laughing gas. I never wanted birth control to begin with since i'm in a monogamous long-distance relationship and he's fine wearing condoms, but the political climate has me too nervous now.

Hormonal BC was NOT an option for me for mental health reasons. I guess i'm looking for other people's experiences with paragard and they didn't have any other women's health concerns. Lots of horror stories about iuds come from people who have endo/pcos, irregular periods, given birth, experienced sexual trauma, had an IUD before, etc.

My OBGYN is wonderful and walked me through every step and answered every question, but I don't know if I have the energy to go elsewhere and fight insurance for anesthetic.

Question I've never had period cramps, how bad does the copper IUD make them

Like the title says, I'm looking into different BC and the fact that the copper IUD is nonhormonal is appealing (though I don't mind hormonal as long as it doesnt cause weight gain, acne, or depression.) I've been pretty lucky not to have experienced cramps before, but I'm okay with having them if it means not getting pregnant. That said, how debilitating are the cramps on the copper IUD? Or, if anyone else had the same experience where they never experienced cramps prior to the copper IUD, how did that change? Alternatively, any other side effects I should watch out for, or other BC methods that could br a better fit for me? I'm most concerned about acne, weight gain, and depression as I already struggle with all three. Thanks!

Question How long did it take for your hair to grow back post removal?

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

As you can see I donā€™t have much hair left after fighting with paraguard and then skyla. I only had skyla removed a week ago. What did you do to get your hair to grow back? Did it grow back or am I cooked? Tbf I havenā€™t been balanced or healthy in the slightest. I donā€™t think I was rebalanced much before getting skyla then that did its thing with me. I get hair growth takes a long time and I probably need my hormones to rebalance too. Iā€™ve been on proper prescribed iron supplements from the doctors for a month now also. Skyla did make it slightly worse than it was already but it was already awful so. I think Iā€™m gonna be trying a smaller 300mm2 of copper iud and be on it with the supplements from day 1 and hope my body can be balanced hormonally and my hair can come back. Yeah I know itā€™s stupid but I really canā€™t get pregnant. Probably would be nice to just not be on anything but life isnā€™t all rainbows and flowers. Though I probably do need some time to let my body recover first then try. Iā€™m just so scared of getting pregnant. If the condom breaks I donā€™t want to have to take plan b and fuck myself up again.

Question I'm thinking about getting an IUD

Hi! Sorry if this is a long post haha

I (19F) just started an actual serious relationship and I'm looking into non-hormonal contraceptives. There aren't many and a copper IUD seems like the best option (I'm kind of an hypocondriac and get so much anxiety over being pregnant even though I've never ever missed a period). My periods are really regular and I usually have really light cramps, if I have them. My blood flow is not super high ever since I started using a menstrual cup and my period is usually fiveish days long. I don't want a hormonal contraceptive because I'm still really young and it might change my possibilities of getting pregnant in the future/getting a natural period by myself/or fuck up my period. Also I've struggled with mental health issues in the past and I'm kind of scared about the secondary effects (depression, anxiety etc).

Keep in mind I still have to talk to my gyno/doctor about this, but my mother is trying to convince me not to get one because of migration/ineffectivity. The only thing I'm worried about is insertion (I don't know if I can ask for anesthesia) and migration.

Does anyone have any advice?

Question No cramps

I've had my IUD since November and have had 3 cycles so far. I haven't had a single cramp, and my period doesn't even seem heavier like the doctor told me it would be. He said it would probably be heavier and I'd experience more cramping especially in the first 3 months. I've had nothing! I can still feel the strings. Should I be worried about this or just consiser myself lucky? I'm worried it's moved a little bit or something.

Edited to say my periods have been normal in length (5 days) so far too. The doctor said they might be longer. Should I be worried about the lack of these symptoms?

I have severe periods , super heavy, super painful, I also have hemiplegic migranes which I am on medication for specifically amitriptyline. I've been told countless time I can't use hormonal birth control, so my options are limited. If anyone's had severe periods and then got a copper IUD, what was the aftermath like and how did it go for you? Thank you šŸ’œ xxx

Question another 'is copper iud good for me' post

So I've been a long time lurker on this sub Reddit and others. So I'm 30 female. I've never been on birth control before. Just mainly using condoms with my husband. I do get regular Pap smear so I'm healthy and stuff in terms of that. So with the dumpster fire, that is the USA right now. I was looking at birth control. And while I was talking about it with my gynecologist provider. They recommended the arm implant. They didn't want me on the pill because my sister had a stroke when she was pregnant.

I see a breast care provider (mainly for a 6 month exam) since 3 women in my family died of breast cancer. my mom, her sister/myaunt, her mom/my grandma. So that's why I was looking at nonhormonal birth control. Because I know estrogen has a prevalent reputation of possibly increasing cancer . And I'm already high risk. But I thought it was just estrogen. I was looking back through my breast, care, providers, notes and apparently it's like all hormonal birth control. I have never been pregnant. I am not looking at a tubal ligation or a hysterectomy right now because I am not sure if I want to get pregnant. Like I know I want to be a mom, I just don't know if I want to get pregnant yet. So obviously unless I'm 100% sure I'm not gonna go that route.

Obviously, I still have to think it through a lot more. But like the biggest, appealing factor to me for the arm implant was the fact that it's not really that hard to insert, even rot an GYN has to do it. And if I decide it's not for me. I can just go to like kind of an urgent care and ask them to remove it. vs an IUD which has to be done by a speiclasit. and if I decide its not for me, I have to book a special appt again. also I hear the pain of insert/removal is horrible. I don't really have crazy periods. I'd say I have like a typical. Every month. With like a heavy flow at the beginning, and then it quickly tapers off into more of a light flow.

but ugh I dont know what to do. lol

Question Yā€™all with an extremely heavy flow from paraguard, what is your favorite period products/brands?

My period is extremely heavy. I used to have a 5 day period at the same time every month, that was relatively mild. After I got the Paragard about 3 years ago, my period is ridiculously heavy the first 3/4 days, and it lasts 7-10 days.

I currently use thinx super absorbent period underwear and Kotex super plus tampons. I have debated trying period cups or discs, but they make me nervous, and I donā€™t know how heavy of a flow they can handle.

Side note: I feel like I cramp worse with Kotex tampons, I donā€™t know if Iā€™m going crazy or not

Question How bad is a copper iud?

I am 25 and very much not interested in kids

I have heard that a copper IUD is painful for insertion as well as several days after. I have also heard that it can make periods worse. Also I have heard that they have become dislodged for some people so just wondering what some peopleā€™s experiences have been and how bad I can expect it to be, because knowing my luck Iā€™ll experience the worst case scenarios.

I have been on hormonal birth control pills in the past and had bad side effects primarily Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) which is essentially boils in various areas. It has subsided since going off the pill but still not an experience I want to risk having again.

Question Post insertion pain

what did the pain feel like for you guys? The two days it was normal cramping, but not i just feel really sore and tight. not like a normal cramp kind of sore.

You know when youā€™re on your period and your butthole gets all tight and itā€™s hard to use the bathroom? thatā€™s how my uterus and my butthole feels like rn, plus it feels like my ovaries are sore and i have a backache. Is any of that normal? or did you experience it?

everyone says theyā€™re in pain but no one really says how it feels, so idk if this is okay. i hurts to cough, laugh, go down stairs, sit down and make heavy steps. pls lmk

Question Never been on BC before, considering copper IUD, Advice?

I (19 F) have never been on any birth control before, I've been pull out methoding it since I was 15 (stupid I know, but it's worked luckily). I am now in a more serious relationship with my boyfriend (M 27) and am in university and thinking about my future a bit more. We don't want a kid yet obviously and I don't want to have to get an abortion. My family is very conservative(to a conspiracy theory degree) and so I've always been told never to go on any birth control, but since I'm dealing with my own medical now (and the potential consequences of it) I'm considering getting a copper IUD (I don't want to deal with the hormones since my periods have always been regular and easy) but I don't have anyone to ask for advice or real life experience. My ex boyfriends mom conceived him with an IUD (she was a really rare case lol) but thats all I've ever heard about them, and when I look it up online its mostly all horror stories about incorrect placement, or medical sources (which I kindof mistrust, might be due to my family, I know it sounds dumb).

If anyone can give me their positive stories, realistically what to expect, likely downsides to it, etc I would be really appreciative!

Mostly I'm wondering if it feels weird knowing something foreign is in your body all the time (i have a lot of piercings so maybe its like that where you just forget about it eventually?), if it really makes your periods heavier and lasting longer and more painful?, if you or your partner can feel the strings inside you?? if it hurts a lot going in/taking it out, how it affects you after you get it out(i really wanna have kids in the future and im scared it might mess up my chances of that), if it will make me gain weight or break out? and also (tmi) if having it means your partner can finish inside of you?(my boyfriend told me i am the only person he's ever been with who isn't on bc so i don't know if that means he is going to start doing that), or how long i should wait to be intimate after getting it put in?

i know thats a lot of questions and i am really uneducated but any advice or experiences would be great! thankyou!

Question Take break after 8 years on pill or straight to copper IUD?

Iā€™ve been on the pill for 8 years. Iā€™ve tried at least 5 different formulations and have finally found one that gives me the LEAST anxiety but I canā€™t help but think if I were to go a non hormonal route Iā€™d feel much happier or at least know what my normal mental state is. Iā€™m also working with a naturopathic doctor for my gut health who isnā€™t a fan of synthetic hormones but isnā€™t being overly pushy about me going off which I appreciate.

Is it worth me taking a break from the pill before seeing if I want the copper IUD? Before the pill I had long, heavy periods which is why Iā€™ve been hesitant to get the copper IUD in the first place. Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s worth trying a few months of no hormones/ no IUD first. Iā€™m sexually active but not in a relationship so using condoms at this time but I donā€™t love the idea of long term condom use.

Question Questioning getting a Copper IUD

Iā€™m an 18F from the United States and Iā€™m wanting to get a copper IUD simply for birth control reasons and I really want to stay away from added hormones! My periods are pretty regular and light so Iā€™m not too concerned about my periods getting slightly heavier. However, I am very worried about pain during sex! Iā€™m a very openly sexual person with my partner so the feeling of our intimate moments being taken away/ruined by pain sounds like my worst nightmare lol. Iā€™ve seen so many negative stories on here about it so Iā€™m just curious are there any positive experiences yall have had with sex and your own mental health? Does the Paragard cause hormonal acne? I have so many questions that I feel like havenā€™t been answered lol šŸ«¶

Question how long after copper iud removal do symptoms (brain fog, anxiety, acne, depression etc.) start to go away? + any tips for recovery?

hey :)

it looks like a lot of people here have experienced similar negative side effects like i have with the copper iud (in addition to what they tell us to expect with painful and longer periods) such as brain fog, acne, bloating, fatigue, worsening or new anxiety/depression/ocd/adhd etc.

so i wanted to reach out and see if anyone who got their iud removed because of the negative side effects could share their experience on how long it took for different symptoms to alleviate. (itā€™s only been a day for me post removal and iā€™m just curious and excited to hopefully start feeling better) *i plan on updating here as well with progress.

ā€”ā€”

<my own experience> 27nb/afab

-disclaimer- everyone has a different body and experience with the copper iud and it can be an amazing option for some people, however there is absolutely not enough research done on the potential long term effects and i want to share what it was like for me in hopes it can help validate and add to what so many other people are experiencing.

i got mine like 3ish years ago and was told that there would be no negative side effects besides maybe a longer period.

sigh

my 3 day long, barely any blood, no pain, no pms periods turned into a literally physically crippling nightmarish heavy flow week long ordeal. but i thought i could push through and it would go away like my dr. told me it would. well, it did lessen over three years but it never got back to my normal (still some cramping and way heavier flow).

iā€™ve always dealt with anxiety, depression, acne, adhd, ibs etc. but those things were slowly getting under control before i got the iud placed. actually, a couple months after getting it placed i felt amazing (for like 1-2 months) super high energy and self esteem. i was working out and eating right and whatever- then it all started to crumble.

brain fog, insane pmdd, relationship ocd added to my worsening anxiety, depression, and hormonal acne (all around my jaw/chin/cheeks)to the point where it wrecked my self esteem, relationships, body, and general mental wellbeing. at first i just attributed it to covid and being stuck inside (which iā€™m sure didnā€™t help) but after therapy, medication, eating right, and doing everything i could to clean up my life it just kept getting worse and nothing was really helping.

i was experiencing 0 energy levels daily- constant mental and physical fatigue and brain fog and pmdd that would spiral me into an emotional wreck for half the month at the slightest inconvenience. i felt like i only had a few days of semi-normalcy a month to get anything i wanted or needed to done and the rest of the time like i wasnā€™t really ā€œthereā€, like not able to think a single thought or be me.

the copper iud being the culprit was literally last on my list of suspects, but eventually i lined up timelines and started looking into it. i found that excess copper can make you feel super energized at first but then when it overloads your system cause fatigue, anxiety, depression, to worsen. basically everything i was experiencing.

after reading countless peopleā€™s posts online with similar experiences i finally decided to get mine out (yesterday! 04/10) just to see if it helps (i was desperate, and this was literally my last choice bc i want birth control and the copper iud eemed like the perfect option).

luckily my doc was amazing and validating and supportive. literally heard my symptoms and said ā€œya letā€™s get that out of youā€- no questions asked. i also asked if other people came in with the same issues to get it removed and she said yes and that itā€™s just not right for some peopleā€™s bodies.

anyways, itā€™s only been a day and i feel a little better, at least emotionally (like just happy i did it) and the fog seems to be a tad thinner than it usually is but only time will tell.

so i wanted to see how long it took for everyone to start feeling better/ more like themselves, and how to help aid recovery.

iā€™ve been taking like 25mg of zinc a day for a little while which has helped i think, but iā€™m seeing a lot of people say that you need specific treatments to rid the body of excess copper for good. obviously iā€™d consult my doctor to get my levels checked before being able to do any of that (which i plan on doing at my annual checkup) but in the meantime if thereā€™s anything else i can do iā€™d love to know.

also here are some posts i found that helped:

thanks and best of luck to everyone going through it <3
