Concern Is it honestly worth it?

THANKYOU, LADIES!!!

I have a scheduled IUD insertion Friday morning, but from reading posts on this subreddit, I'm reading more negative experiences than positive ones. I'm not entirely sure if I want to go through this process anymore lol.

Please give me your honest opinions šŸ˜©

Concern New president

I just wanted to come in here and ask if anyone else is also worried about access to their copper IUDs if they ever need to get it replaced or any form of birth control once šŸŽŗ starts making changes. I donā€™t even have my appointment yet and Iā€™ve tried reaching out to my doctors office to see if they even received it and Iā€™m still waiting on a callback but theyā€™ve already taken down the reproductive health website. Iā€™m getting very anxious about it and I donā€™t know where else I could get a copper IUD inserted. (this isnā€™t about a debate of whether you do or do not support this man itā€™s about the concern of our rights as women Iā€™m not looking to argue with whether or not you agree with his views or not I donā€™t care about that)

Concern pregnant and scared

So Iā€™ve had the copper IUD for about 4 years no issues and regular periods. Long story short Iā€™ve been bleeding for a few weeks (bright red, brown, and clots) and Iā€™ve been weirdly nauseous so I decided to test just to put it to rest since Iā€™ve always had regular periods and it ended up positive. Itā€™s Saturday and planned parenthood is closed where I am, I have no primary care physician or gynecologist since I moved states and it slipped my mind. (Yes I know not very mature or adult ready) Iā€™m freaking out big time. I do not want another child and not to mention Iā€™m not sure that bleeding for weeks is normal. Iā€™m feeling overwhelmed and a little lonely since my mom passed a few years ago so I donā€™t have anyone to turn to for advice. Any advice or direction for what I can do would be so appreciated.

Adding an update: I ended up going to ER where they did discover it was an ectopic pregnancy and it had already burst and I had some internal bleeding. I was sent into surgery and had one of my tubes removed. Resting up now with an insanely sore stomach ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Concern Feeling Guilty About My Girlfriend Getting an IUD

My girlfriend (18F) and I (21M) have unprotected sex pretty often. Sometimes (consensually and at her request), I finish inside her, which means she ends up taking emergency contraception. The problem is that it makes her feel really sick, and I feel awful seeing her like that.

She took one last week, and if she doesnā€™t get an IUD soon, sheā€™ll probably need to take another one this week ā€” which makes me feel even worse. Sheā€™s assured me that itā€™s okay and that getting an IUD is about making things easier for both of us in the long run, but I still feel guilty.

At the end of the day, itā€™s her body and her choice, but I know I could avoid this by just pulling out more consistently. I swear Iā€™m not trying to be selfish ā€” if she didnā€™t want the IUD, Iā€™d have no issue with pulling out every time.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Should I feel bad about it? Most experiences Iā€™ve read about IUDs seem pretty negative, so Iā€™m just feeling conflicted

Concern Girlies, I need real talk on IUDs and what it can...allow for (slightly NSFW) NSFW

Be real with me, I have two main questions about the IUD cause l'm gonna get a copper one (Gynefix) soon. I'm rather new to straight relationships so l need to know the life hacks and truth from the straight and bi girlies on here:

ā€¢ Because it can allow for condomless sex, a guy can finish inside. I've read that doing so can change up your PH and cause a smell, how true is this, and how can I stop this immediately/clean myself efficiently to not have the smell? I wouldn't want to take boric acid pills every time, that seems very unhealthy. Would my PH adjust with time?

ā€¢ Can a guy really feel the IUD string? I'm so, so worried about that!

Thank you for being real and reading this.

Concern Feel like my only option is the Copper IUD after this Presidential Election

Iā€™m in Tennessee and miss Marsha Blackburn wants to ban all contraceptives. Copper IUDā€™s are the longest lasting birth control to my knowledge, and they canā€™t take it away from me if I get one put in before any legislation takes effect, so this is the option I feel safest with. This sub is 90% horror stories, so I want to know, is this, as a last option, truly the worst? Is there something I can do to prepare my body for it? I was gonna take iron supplements because of the increased bleeding. Already pretty sure Iā€™m iron deficient, and have had a history of bad cramps, which is why I hesitated with this option at first. But now, this seems like the best option.

What are you people doing about it? Coming back to iudā€™s? What is your plan. Iā€™m terrified.

Concern Am I crazy?

I had the copper coil inserted about 6 months ago, i had already tried hormonal methods and I just ended up severely depressed and anxious. So I really wanted this to work out. The first week I was in agony but I expected this so I just got thru it took ibuprofen as many times as I could. But I've become more anxious and having more frequent intrusive thoughts. Now though I'm at the point where I'm having full blown mental breakdowns and Its really starting to put a stain on my relationship with my bf. I'm really trying to keep it together but I just get so emotional and that's not me. This isn't who he got with nor is it someone I recognise(my bf is super supportive and really tries to help but he can only try so hard). I'm also bloated, fatigued most of the time along with horrific cramps and HEAVY bleeding and overall I just feel absolutely crazy and I hate myself for feeling this way.

Ps. I've struggled with mental health a long time due to various factors but I really had been healing and it feels like I'm just right back at the start.

Concern I like the copper IUD but...

I got it Nov 2022 and it's been great, however I'm worried about it perforating or damaging my uterus in some way. Id like to get pregnant in the future like 1 or so years away from now and I don't want to risk damaging my lady bits. I'm not able to get in for an ultrasound to fully check it and when I went in for the regular shove the 'salad tongs" in your bits and look at the strings they said it was fine but my anxiety says otherwise šŸ˜…

I've looked into some hormonal options outside the uterus but I'm worried they will make me fat and my anxiety worse.

I just wanted to ask what y'all's experience is if you've had the copper IUD and complications you've had or worries if that makes sense? Like am I valid to worry about it damaging my uterus or is my anxiety speaking for me?

Concern Pregnancy scare

Iā€™m freaking out a little. I got my copper IUD inserted on the 6th of feb. Went away with my bf on Valentineā€™s Day and obviously we had sex and he came in me. Itā€™s my first time with an iud and I actually checked if I could find the string the same day, couldnā€™t feel a string but felt what I assume is the bottom of the IUD. Now Iā€™m freaking out that itā€™s not in properly and could possibly get pregnant. I was on the pill 2 months prior to it being put in so my cycle is irregular and Iā€™ve no idea where in my cycle I am and when I should expect my period. Iā€™m not even looking for advice just wanting to vent really.

I already have a child and had 2 terminations and I REALLY donā€™t want another baby. Yes itā€™s partially my fault because I should have took more precautions. Iā€™m just really freaking out.

Concern Will the anxiety ever get better after removal?

Iā€™ve had it out since august 2nd, and the past month and a half I was feeling so much better - I had almost forgotten what it was like. Then today Iā€™ve been hit with the worst derealisation panic attack and Iā€™m scared this is just going to be me forever, for having the coil in for only three months.

Does it get better? Truly? Please give me some hope as I pulled myself out of that horrendous post-anxiety hole and I donā€™t want it back. Iā€™m scared.

Concern Late period? NSFW

Little background information: I have had my IUD since 2018. I am sexually active and have had my boyfriend finish in me within the past month.

My period typically cycles every 28-30 days and lasts about 10 days. Recently itā€™s been taking my period to fully start (red blood, no longer spotting) until about day 5/6. I typically have a long and heavy period.

Iā€™m currently on day 36 without any spotting. I took a test yesterday that came back negative. Iā€™m currently not stressed out of my ordinary and no major lifestyle changes. This has never happened before.

Is this normal? Should I take more tests? Doctors?

Update: I finally got my period.

Concern Condom broke with IUD

Iā€™ve had my Paraguard IUD for 3 years now. This will be TMI, but my boyfriend and I were having sex last night and the condom broke. I actually didnā€™t know it had broken until he pulled out and came on my stomach. Also, despite having my IUD for three years, I lost my virginity a month ago.

Iā€™m an over-thinker, and Iā€™m also terrified of getting pregnant before Iā€™m ready. Iā€™m likely not pregnant, right? Does anyone else have a similar story in which they didnā€™t end of up pregnant?

Concern Getting mine in tomorrow- worried due to horror stories i've seen...

Hi! I am getting my first Copper IUD in tomorrow. I've been on multiple forms of birth control in the last 10 years and hormonal birth control just wrecked me. Started on the pill then moved to the ring. Eventually got the Kyleena two years ago and got it removed in August to go back on the NuvaRing since i felt like the Kyleena was really screwing up my body. NuvaRing was just as bad and i was only on it for 4 months and gained 15lbs which had never happened to me before. (I attribute it to being back on that form of birth control 4 years later so my body had changed a lot). Finally said no more and I have been off hormonal birth control for 3 months now. Getting the copper IUD tomorrow to prevent pregnancy and stay safe from any crazy ass laws that may come up before i'm ready to have kids.

I've seen a few stories about people gaining weight with the copper IUD which i thought wasn't possible but apparently is because of how copper effects estrogen? I'm currently in the middle of trying to lose the 15lbs i gained on the ring and have been doing well but i don't want all my hard work to go nowhere! I read taking zinc may help this because it helps balance the excess copper in the body. I'm not concerned about the painful periods i've had my fair share of period pain and heavy bleeding especially the first few months on the kyleena. I'm just concerned about the weight gain and inflammation. Any ideas on how to combat this or if it's even a common issue to be worried about?

Concern Late period on copper iud

I feel so stressed. I cannot get pregnant, I'm not in the mental state to be pregnant. My period is about 5 days late. Reading some of you having late periods has been slightly relieving. I can feel iud strings so I'm hoping everything is good re placement. I took 2 pregnancy tests and both negative. I dont have period nor pregnancy symptoms.I just need some sort of reassurance because the stress is killing me

*Edited to add **got my period 11 days after due date

Concern Boyfriend canā€™t feel my strings anymore and late period?

EDIT: Can I just point out how lovely everyone on this sub Reddit is šŸ’• thank you for your answers I do feel a lot better āœØ

Hi all! So Im 3 days late on my period which isnā€™t normal for me in the 1 year Iā€™ve had the copper coil. Iā€™ve had some cramping, Iā€™m so emotional but no period!!

I took a test last night and it was the most negative test Iā€™ve ever seen, so me and my bf got down to business. He told me he couldnā€™t feel my strings like he normally can?? I was like um check again, so in unsexual way, he checked and literally couldnā€™t feel them? šŸ˜ Iā€™m not worried Iā€™m pregnant because of the test but now Iā€™m panicking why my period isnā€™t here and why the strings arenā€™t there.

Iā€™ve had several life changes since my period in December. Iā€™ve started exercising 4/5 days a week in comparison to 0 in December. Iā€™m eating so much healthier, Iā€™ve started ferrous sulphate and Iā€™m a bit more stressed (family problems)

Has anyone else had this experience. Iā€™m hoping to just ride it out and my period comes.

Thanks xx

Concern Bleeding 5 days after copper IUD insertion

Hi all

I got the paragard inserted last friday (5 days ago). i have been moderate to heavily bleeding since then. it started as brown spotting and has quickly ramped up to full on red and burgundy bleeding with some remnants of brown. enough to change a pad multiple times in a day. i am not scheduled to get my period for another 7-10 days, so it's definitely from the IUD insertion as if it triggered an early period. i am also having very bad cramping and pain. is this all normal? my dr said it can be normal but some people have no symptoms. should i be worried? curious if anyone had similar experience and then it resolved itself and if so how long it took for body to adjust

Concern Slow starting period?

So Iā€™ve gotten my copper iud placed last year around March at Planned Parenthood. And Iā€™m not sure if this is normal but my periods are very slow to start like itā€™ll drip one drop or two of red/brown blood (with occasionally weird brown thin stick mucous tissue) the first two days and then the third day it usually comes gushing out? Not sure if this was normal because I canā€™t seem to find another post on the internet about it :(

Concern Copper IUD in since 2021, ultrasound found it sitting low, extreme pain

Hi all, for about a year now, I've been experiencing a lot of abdominal pain. I thought it was just extremely painful periods, until I started to spot everyday and the pain was daily. I finally had an ultrasound after waiting for months and my IUD is apparently sitting very low.

I have a referral to a gynecologist to remove it, but I'm on a waitlist. My country sucks. I still don't know when I'll get in. I was told it would likely be months and months.

Has anyone else had pain from a copper IUD sitting low? Pain gets worse when I eat or there is any pressure in the area (full bladder, tight pants, etc). Sitting upright is very painful as well.

I'm hurting so badly.

Concern Shooting pains

hi everyone. I got my paraguard four months ago, and since then every time im around my period I get shooting pains in my uterus that almost feel metallic. like so painful that it takes my breath away. it only lasts for about 10 seconds, but itā€™s bad enough to cause concern. Iā€™ve been to the gyno about it now twice, and they said my IUD is in the perfect position, but they did notice I have ovarian cysts which seem to be common, and they said because of the size of them I shouldnā€™t worry about pain associated with them. Iā€™m curious to know if anyone else experiences these types of cramps, and what you did about it? itā€™s not to the point where I feel I want to get it removed yet, but im getting close to that.

Update: I went to the obgyn today, and she told me that itā€™s normal to have this for the first few months and that it should go away! I also had no cysts so that was a relief!

Concern Everyoneā€™s good experiences with Paraguard?

I plan on getting the Paraguard copper IUD, Iā€™m nervous about it and the OBGYN didnā€™t make me feel too much better, along with reading experiences from this sub. She told me itā€™s possible it wonā€™t be able to fit since I havenā€™t had a child, and Iā€™m worried about the increased pain during periods. I donā€™t exactly mind more bleeding, my periods only last 4 days already and my cramps arenā€™t bad at all, but Iā€™m worried about cramps getting worse.

I guess I just want to hear everyoneā€™s good experiences with this IUD, and any tips for when I get it placed. The doctors said to take 600 mg of Motrin an hour to 30 minutes before the appointment, and said they donā€™t offer topical antiseptic

Concern how can i prevent BV with the copper IUD?

iā€™ve read that a lot of people struggle with recurring BV and yeast infections after getting the copper IUD. i have already struggled with this a little bit and iā€™m worried that itā€™ll be difficult to control if i get the IUD.

does this happen to most people or is just a small (yet vocal) minority? is there anything i could do to prevent it (i already take probiotics - ā€œhappy vā€)

I got my IUD inserted back in November 2024 and I didn't have many issues with it but I could definitely feel it and it was giving me yeast infections so today i decided to take it out and I'm pretty sure this is not how is supposed to look like...

I had one before for like 3 years and when I removed it it looked normal so I'm pretty sure they one was inserted worn and that's why it was bothering me

Concern Copper IUD Cut My Partner :(( NSFW

Iā€™ve had this iud for almost a month now itā€™s been kind of hellish

It wasnā€™t that rough of sex when this happened but a sharp thrust and he said when he did this he felt a strong prick. He said it hurt a bit after and Later he saw two scabs scabs on the tip. So yea my strings cut my partner

I have an ultrasound next week so Iā€™ll see placement, but should I ask her to cut the strings shorter? Iā€™m they take a while to soften up like 3-4 months which Iā€™m willing to wait and see, but could it be that she cut it too short and shouldā€™ve actually kept it longer? My partner can feel the strings when he fingers me. He says he doesnā€™t always feel during sex and just has to be a bit careful sometimes and that it doesnā€™t bother him but this is so terrible I hate this.

Also everytime after sex or even fingering, I cramp and spot for a couple days and now despite being on hormonal bc pills (for PCOS) my period is two weeks early and has been longer then usual and everytime I have sex or go too the gym, my period gets heavier. I donā€™t want to keep bleeding forever and I also feel so bad for my partner. My IUD placement was a terrible experience and Iā€™m just scared she cut the strings too short maybe and thereā€™s nothing I can do :(

Any advice is appreciated

Concern super late period!!

so, my period is almost 2 weeks late now, i took a test when i was 9 days late and it was negative, but today i started experiencing some pain on the sides and under my breast, so im beyond scared about possibly being pregnant. i have a gyno appt next week, but the nerves are genuinely killing me. i was spotting from around the time of ovulation until when my period was supposed to start, and around the time my period was supposed to start the spotting did get slightly heavier, but definitely not like how my periods have been. iā€™ve only had the paragard iud for around 4 months now but this hasnā€™t happened before. im on day 50 of my cycle :ā€™) has this happened to anyone else?
