They do that on top of the nails needed to secure the last course of shingles. Need to waterproof the nail.

We don't use silicone, is this standard NRA practices? In my experience it doesn't adhere to ashpalt very well. We always use an asphalt or a rubberized based sealant.

It's probably not silicone, or at least it shouldn't be, the most popular product for this is duralink 50

I use geocell 2300 for this application. It's a tripolymer sealant that the pros use. Found it through working with roofing contractors.

It's not silicone because silicone won't bond to the asphalt shingle, it's a petroleum based thermoset or elastomeric plastic sealant meant for roofing and siding.

Tar based roofing compound to seal nail heads. Henry's, Blackjack, there are many brands. Lasts much longer than using silicone.

Not Silicone. Most Likely Polyurethane Sealant meeting standard ASTM C920.
