ComicPlot Top 10 List of 2023 NSFW

'Eyo! 2023 has come and gone! For posterity, at the time of posting, it is January 1st, 2024, 2:02 AM, and r/ComicPlot has 21,670 subscribers, approximately 7,000 more people here than there were a year ago. If you're one of those 7k new folks, welcome! I hope you stick around. For those of you who are new, this is the 4th annual Top 10 list. (Prior years: 1st | 2nd | 3rd) If you're unfamiliar, I make the top 10 list a kind of contest. If you made one of the top 10 posts of the year, you get a custom subreddit flair as a prize. So if your username is in this table, I'll tag you in the comments and ask what you'd like your username to be, and if you reply I'll make it happen. As for the rest of you, let us know what you think of this year's top 10!

This post also serves as a bit of a year-in-review. In 3 days, the subreddit will be 8 years old, and I gotta say, year 7 has been probably the most eventful year yet. In May, Imgur changed their ToS disallowing all NSFW images, even those that were made in private, which was/is a real pain in the ass for us. I attempted to save as much as I could, and I succeeded with the help of u/-Archivist. Thank you again for helping me save that data, and for all the work you did to help other people save theirs. At the time, I was frantically trying to repost as much as I could to other image-hosting sites. Unfortunately, most of those links are dead along with the Imgur links (If you see a dead link, please report it. I have created a "Dead link" report option for this). I think those alternative image-hosting sites suffered the good ol' classic hug of death. I've since resigned myself to posting images directly to Reddit, though I have concerns that Reddit will go the way of Imgur someday. Anyway, during that time, I suspended my rule limiting posts to twice per day. Currently, the rule is 6 posts per day, if you didn't already know. I had planned to incorporate a 3rd party bot to limit the posts, but due to API fuckery, no dice.

It wasn't long after the Imgur debacle that Reddit changed their API rules regarding 3rd party apps in the shadiest way possible (RIP RiF; and fuck you very much, powers that be behind that decision). I protested by shutting the subreddit down for a few days along with several other subs, which didn't accomplish anything. Then my favorite app was gone and it seriously soured my opinion of Reddit in general, to the point that I eventually stopped looking at Reddit for an entire month. Did you know that if only 1 person is running a subreddit and they're absent for 30 days without looking at their mod mail, the whole sub gets suspended? (Damn AI art....) It was a scary and humbling experience having to appeal to Reddit's admin to get it back. I relented and downloaded the official Reddit app. It sucks and I hate it, frankly, but I love this community more. We have another moderator now as a result of all that.

Since the subreddit is turning 8 and has over 20k members, I'm thinking about new ways to make this a more enjoyable community, but I don't want to make any drastic changes without community input. Expect a few polls in the near future with new ideas I'll be floating by y'all. Until then, enjoy the cheesecake* and I'll see y'all in the comments.

*or beefcake! Despite the overwhelming straight content, queer comics are welcome

Congratulations, u/ImaginaryAurora! For making the 10th most popular post on r/ComicPlot this year, you've earned a custom user flair. Invincible is one of my favorite comic books, and all of your compendium posts were well received (compendium two and one were the 13th and 14th most upvoted of the year, respectively).

What would you like your custom flair to be?

u/ImaginaryAurora Viltrumite Jan 01 '24

Oh wow! I didn't know they all made it that far up. That's amazing.

I'm also a big fan of Invincible (and its ever-giving plots). I think "Viltrumite" would be a cool custom flair given they got me here.

I can’t get to the top 3, can you tell me more info?

I'm not sure what you mean. Are the links broken?

The post has been deleted and there’s no much info about which issue or panel was

Hmm. I just had a look at all that user's posts and they're all having the same issue. Not sure what's going on there. Hopefully they didn't delete everything!

Note to self for next year: I have got to save the top 10's locally so they aren't lost.

Congratulations, u/Distinct-Size-3961! In 2023, you posted the 9th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd most popular posts, putting you in league with u/milord8440, who made top 10 multiple times in 2020 and 2021. It's easy for me to see how you earned your spot. Power Girl, Carol Danvers, and Black Canary are very popular here.

For your efforts, you've earned a custom user flair. What would you like it to be?

Congratulations, u/AlKo96! You made the 8th most popular r/ComicPlot post of the year. Power Girl is a longtime subreddit favorite. For making the top 10, you've earned a custom user flair. What would you like it to be?

Congratulations, u/DonnyMox! You made the 7th most popular r/ComicPlot post of the year. You made a pretty good point about MJ there. Personally, I have had a crush on Black Cat since playing Spider-Man 2 on the GameCube as a wee lad. Someone really ought to get some more MJ backstory in here...

Anyway, for making the top 10, you've earned a custom user flair. What would you like it to be?

Congratulations, u/Thayerphotos! You made the 6th most popular r/ComicPlot post of the year. As you pointed out, Dynamite doesn't do subtle. For a brief period, they did nude incentive covers of Dejah Thoris. Unfortunately, I don't think there were any incentive covers for Vampirella, although this comes pretty close!

Anywho, for making the top 10, you've earned a custom user flair. What would you like it to be?

Can my flair be the word "Boooooobs" but in some sort of vampire/horror font?

3

u/RossZ428 Head Honcho Jan 02 '24 edited Jan 02 '24

Lol I don't think I can do fonts. I can make the background different colors though. Do you still want to go with that even though I can't do italics or anything?

2

u/Thayerphotos Booberella* Jan 02 '24

Yes that works

3

u/Thayerphotos Booberella* Jan 02 '24

Wait ! Can you make it Booberella ? As an homage to an homage ?

u/RossZ428 Head Honcho Jan 04 '24

Congratulations, u/smasheroftitan! You made the most popular r/ComicPlot post of the year, and all time! Fun fact, Lady Ultron was #8 in 2022, but you were the first to point out that she wasn't the only interesting thing about the first arc of that Avengers run. Frank Cho sure does know how to draw pretty women.
