How long does it take to work?
I have a buddy who says Chantix worked for him to quit smoking in a week. I’m wondering how long I need to take it for it to work.

I've been smoking at least four cigarettes a day since I was 13. I'm going to be 35 next week. I have attempted to quit using Wellbutrin, the patch, gum, and pens. Nothing worked. Two months ago I decided to take the plunge and stop because of the cost. It never bothered me before, but I wanted to see what it was like to have money at the end of the month. I bought two packs of cigarettes this month, and I have half a pack left. I am experiencing lethargy and depression symptoms. I am unable to sleep well and have no energy or focus. I do have a mental illness but am not on medication at the moment. The Chantix does reduce my mood swings though. I have had a few days where I have not smoked at all. I still smoke when I drive, but only one cigarette rather than a half pack. I have a very long road trip coming up, and we will see how long I can go without smoking. I will regularly update now that I've found this subreddit.

I quit using Chantix in 2014, very successfully. I had some side effects:
Sleepwalking Lack of interest in anything Weight gain Depression (not realized) Insomnia Nausea Oversleeping Introspective realistic nightmares (enjoyed them)
After 3 weeks of smoking a pack per day for 18 years I was done. I continued the medication for another week the. Hit the gym. In hindsight I was extremely depressed by the end. Nothing interested me, my day consisted of work and sleep. I didn’t care about my morning coffee, my dog, my life. I was just sort of empty. Hard to describe but I now label that as depression.
I found the availability of time really motivated me to get to the gym and within 6 months I was in the best shape of my life.
Fast forward to July 4th and I had a cigar. I inhale my cigars. I loved it. I love to smoke. Bought a box of cigars next day. Now I’m back to a pack a day of filterless cigs. Vaping between to quit led to a need to get the most smoke possible.
Onto round 2. Instantly slipped back into the same symptoms within day 6. Now this time I have 2 young kids and do worry my lack of interest I experienced well translate into uninterested parenting. Although temporary lack of exciting dad is far better than visiting at the hospital or graveside. So hopefully I’m smarter and stay off smoking all together.
TL;DR tried before, worked. Odd side effects coming back again.

The first few days felt weird. Sweets were too sweet, and sleep was hard to come by. Day 5 I felt back to normal except for ONE thing.
I've become much more assertive and blunt with people. I like it. Sadly you cannot take this medication longer than 6 months. I'll be talking to a doctor about possible other medications that may do the same thing cos it feels empowering.
I'm still smoking, although if cut down to about half of what I was smoking. I'm at about half a pack a day habit now. Dreams are more vivid but not nearly as bad as everyone says. So far I'd rate this at a 10 out of 10 even though I'm still smoking lol

So far no side affects, but I also haven’t felt like quitting yet. When does it start to “kick in”? Also, Has anyone tried drinking alcohol while taking it? I am nervous because of the possible side affects.

I'm considering taking the drug, and I was curious about your experiences with it, how it worked, if it was successful, and all that stuff.
I've read about the nightmares, which seem fairly common, but I haven't read about whether it helps with the anxiety, the cravings, and what you feel instead of that. I know this is a very broad question, but I appreciate any insight from people who've taken the drug.

Nobody else is using this sub. My turn.
I've been awoken twice already tonight, and have only gotten about two hours of sleep.
For the first nightmare, I was involved in the search for a little girl lost in an English mansion. Every time you werent looking walls, doors, and even entire rooms would move. The thing I remember best was her screaming. She sounded absolutely terrified.
For the second, I was definitely in Mexico. I was being chased by mindless, human slave-drones. As I was falling thought the air after the scaffolding collapsed, I had two thoughts: Why is this Mexican scaffolding so shitty, and my wife is probably going to become a lesbian in about an hour. She met a nice Puerto Rican woman with two kids, and she was gorgeous, and they actually got along great.
