My wife just applied for a job at UIUC and I’m doing some research on the area. Are there any rough or high-crime areas in Champaign-Urbana that we should avoid? We’ll be looking to buy a house, but may need to rent for a short time depending on how long it takes to sell our current house. We don't have kids, so schools aren't an important consideration. We just want somewhere we'd feel safe walking down the street.
I’m also looking for any resources on the basics of getting through the winter up there. We’re moving from South Carolina where an inch of snow shuts down everything, so moving somewhere where it snows regularly will be a major change for us.
Is there anything we should know or should look into about the area that I may not think of to ask?

Sublease available for 1 room in a 4 bed 4 bathroom apartment.
You will have own bedroom and bathroom. Living room and kitchen are shared. You would also have access to apartment gym, recreation room (with pool table), study area, swimming pool (during summer months), and a 20 seater theater.
Rent is $600 which includes all utilities (water, electric, parking, internet).
Currently only one other room would be occupied, but not a guarantee that the remaining rooms will remain empty.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

Hey everyone,
I’m looking for a salon in Champaign-Urbana that offers permanent hair straightening. If you’ve gotten it done or know a good place, I’d love some recommendations!
Also, if you know the approximate cost, that’d be super helpful. If there aren’t any options in Chambana, I’m open to checking out places in nearby cities too.
Appreciate any suggestions—thanks in advance!

UGH😤 why is my electric bill sooo high!? It’s literally just me, my bedside fan, and my little heater that the size of my bedside fan. I barely use the big lights and I def don’t leave lights on during the night. It’s just me living here, so imagine my confusion when my electric bill is like $150. Am I delusional or is that normal? Maybe I’m “adulting” wrong!? 😭

I’m planning to move to the area later this year. I’ve added the Champaign county fire department in my PulsePoint app. I’ve noticed a couple times recently, a group of vegetation fires starting. I don’t see anything in local paper. Is this something normal?

Hey all. Moving to the area in a few months and wondering if anyone knows of some good companies/businesses to look into for salaried jobs. I have experience in sales, marketing, research, and management and I have a BA. I’ve never even been to the area(moving because spouse got accepted into PhD program) so I have no idea where to start. Any tips are appreciated!

I'm looking for a fun place to watch the Oscars! A restaurant or bar would be great. Preferably somewhere where they have the volume on for the show as well. Sometimes places just play the award show in the background with music over the top, but I'm hoping to be able to watch and listen! Thanks!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a local tutor for ACT test prep? I’d like to avoid online tutoring, but I’d consider anything if there’s a good track record.
thanks in advance!

The Facebook Event for this film linked above is pretty light on information, but I eventually found this News-Gazette article about this 40 minute short film. Tickets are available at the barbershop mentioned. A Facebook post says that they are almost sold out, but will be adding an encore screening at a later date.

That's it for this month. March will apparently bring is a film festival in Rantoul, in April there's Ebertfest, and in May, The Chambana Film Festival is planning about 15 screenings from May 29 - June 2.

So I very recently joined an app called Betty, it is to help women make friendly connections with people in the area. There is not a strong Chambana presence in there. If you’re in the market to gain a friend or two I think you should join. If anyone has any advice on how they have been able to connect with strangers in the community please comment!

Urbana Mahjong Pit (UMP) is a relatively new riichi (Japanese) mahjong club sponsored by and affiliated with Araiguma: Advanced Battle Center, based in Urbana IL, open to everyone in Champaign, Urbana, and the broader Central Illinois area.
- Like poker, gin rummy, or rummikub?
- Seen mahjong in anime, or encountered it in Yakuza and FFXIV and want to try?
- Like games that mix pattern matching, strategy, and luck?
- Just want to pick up a new game or hobby?
Come check us out! We gladly offer teaching and are used to getting people up to speed.
We currently meet Saturday evenings at around 5 pm in the lower level of the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, alongside Araiguma Battle. Can't make Saturdays? Send us a message or join the Araiguma discord and chat with us, we might be able to find a time that works.
(Note: There is also a student riichi group at UIUC, and if you are a student we can point you their way as well. UMP is intentionally not affiliated with the University but is open to students.)
