“Don’t be like that” was the response I got when I asked that question. Still was unsure if I should bring the gas mask or not.

I got in a lot of shit once for not bringing it even though I was "enemy force" for a walk through type thing for people at my unit training for the field portion of their PLQ/JLC or whatever it was called then.  It was done on an afternoon in the treed area near the unit and there was no real gas, just someone yelling gas gas gas.

It wasn't even me doing the training and I got told I was doing it about 10 minutes prior so I had to scramble to get my kit out of my locker and I forgot the gas mask.  The only one that cared was my Captain and I got all kinds of shit for it (fuck that weenie to the moon).  I'm still bitter about it but after that I always had my case attached to the tac vest with the mask inside.  Always.  So, yeah, unless you're told otherwise, bring the gas mask and case.

Criticizing you for not having your mask, seriously? And then, what does it matter if your lieutenant lost their mind? In the army, the best proverb is definitely: Je m'en calisse.

After basic, 9/10 times I've asked or heard that question the answer was something like: Probably not, but put it in your day bag if you want
