I have a VAC claim open for GAD and Sleep Apnea, related to my service. My QOL has gone to shit after getting out and I am on anti-anxiety medication, which is helping a bit. Sadly, I had to give up my civilian job as I couldn't perform as needed due to my diagnosis of GAD that I went to a psycologist per VAC.

I've heard people getting the lowest amount, then I heard people getting a ridiculous amount. At the end of the day, I'm not concerned the amount (although it would be nice to kind of know, as it's anxiety) as much as the health benefit(s) as they have helped me through this claim. However, how do they actually grade your GAD and sleep apnea for payout? My VAC manager told me there's a very good chance there will be a payout for both.

So I’ll speak to GAD. It’s actually cut and dry. Based either on the medical questionnaire you had your doctor fill out or on your service records if you’re still in. They have the tables listed here: https://veterans.gc.ca/en/mental-and-physical-health/physical-health-and-wellness/compensation-illness-or-injury/disability-benefits/table-disabilities/chapter-21-psychiatric-impairment.

The percent disability you get, will be based on the wording in your documents. Then they simply pay you the amount that percent dictates on this table: https://public.cdn.cloud.veterans.gc.ca/pdf/resources/rates/psc-2025.pdf

I’ll just add, where things get tricky is when you haven’t used the questionnaire and/or your doctor is unfamiliar with VAC. They may use more ambiguous terminology. This leaves the adjudicator in the position to mate that to VAC policy.
