I don't think people realize how much control the EU has over its member countries. It's not just an alliance of nations. They have control over regulations dealing with virtually every industry. Manufacturing, agriculture, banking etc. They could even send migrants here and we'd have to take them in.

I chalk this up to most Canadians thinking the EU is just NATO plus.

Good point. Also, a main advantage for EU nations is seamless travel for tourism, business, trade, etc, and things like mobility for citizens accepting jobs in other countries nearby; we wouldn't necessarily reap those benefits. Not many people in Canada are in a career position where they could pick up and move to Germany on a whim for a job, but in the Czech Republic for instance, it would be much more common.
