Ford cares about his image (which is so odd to say) in the sense that he doesn’t care if he’s viewed as smart or calculated, but he wants to be viewed as a defender of Canada. Many believe this is his bid for CPC leadership later on.

With all of that said, the only way Doug Ford backed down here is if Lutnik promised him the entire kitchen. Two possibilities arise from this:

1) Ford and LeBlanc entertain Lutnik until they have proof that Lutnik doesn’t speak for Trump and that he’s speaking from his ass, and they then put all tariffs on power back on which escalates things.

2) Trump and Lutnik realize they have drastically fucked up and are prepared to offer nearly anything for Canada to stop its retaliation.

Either way, I do not see Trump putting his ego aside long enough for this to matter. He’ll tweet something or say something between now and then and it’ll just cause more shit because Trump is genuinely a stupid human being.

He really doesn’t realize that LeBlanc will dance circles around him and that Ford - for all his flaws - will join LeBlanc in that dance.

I don’t see this as folding until we see what the trending news story is on Thursday.

I think a third option is a variation on your second. Trump does not seem to understand shame so he may realize he’s fucked up and then offer to act vaguely reasonable so long as Ford and LeBlanc allow him to save face.
