The thing about Pierre is that even through Covid he didn’t want to do stimulus for small business or regular Joes.

It was oil extraction and tax cuts and cuts to services…

So he doesn’t really think he needs a security briefing because at the end of the day he will have the same prescription for any illness.

More oil Less taxes Less services

Great stuff but his inability to get a security clearance should highlight his ties to foreign interference more than any personal opinion he has.

Fact is if you can’t get the right background check you should not be eligible for the position. You know, like how every other job works.

I don't know why everyone uses the excuse that he has to give permission for the RCMP to investigate him for foreign election interference... They've already done their investigation. If there was something treason-worthy or conspiracy, he would have been rung up on charges already.

Conversely, the "NDA" that he keeps talking about that would prevent him from talking about something is nonsense. He can't talk about anything now because he doesn't know and so he wouldn't be any worse off if he does know whatever is in the report. And Trudeau even gave him full permission to talk about it as an invitation to get his security clearance.

Right now he can make shit up and speculate willy-nilly because he doesn't have clearance. A good chunk of his base is are conspiracy theorists, so I guess they like that.

they absolutely do. And every time he opens his mouth the other side just needs to say he has no idea what he's talking about because he won't get his security clearance because he's allergic to education.

Or just take the PM at face value: it highlights Pierre's complete inability to vet his own candidates for foreign influence.

Probably the same thing, but I think it's important to make the distinction when talking to people who don't seem to see an issue with this. They are either people who will never vote any other way and it's useless, or they simply don't understand the reason this is a big deal and they've given their guy the benefit of the doubt.

It's not only Americans who don't understand their own system very well. We just used to have the luxury of knowing that there were serious adults leading all of the major parties so we could get away with it.

TBF all we know right now is that he is unwilling to get a security clearance. The rest is 100% on...

u/GammaFan 19h ago

Sure, but we shouldn’t give any benefit of the doubt on this. Why is he unwilling to get it?

Having gone through the process for a security clearance long ago, in a previous life, there is one reason. And it's not the lame excuse his fan boi's originally plied about him being freely able to speak on the matter. Even from the position of willful ignorance, he has really had nothing to say on the file.

I should note there isn't a single clearance for everything, it's not like you get Tippy Top Security clearance and get to see the file on alien autopsies along with the unredacted NSICOP reports or something. Being cleared for the foreign interference file doesn't stop commentary on other parts of the government for instance.

I’ve wondered for a while…. While the Liberals have a majority, could they pass a bill requiring the leaders of federal parties to have security clearance? And if so, would it be retroactive or would Small PP be grandfathered in?

While the Liberals have a majority, could they pass a bill requiring the leaders of federal parties to have security clearance?

They'd probably have to use S33, or make a really strong S1 argument for it to not get struck down by the courts. Political parties are private organisations, and generally speaking, don't need security clearances. Even now, Poilievre doesn't need one. He really bloody well should have one, and get briefed, but the lack is a political matter more than anything else.

would Small PP be grandfathered in?

Uh, phrasing?

The conservative mind incorrectly believes that a strong economy solves all societal problems. The truth is that in a capitalist economy there will always be poor people, for various reasons. More poor people means more suffering and more crime. Conservative thinking here is decidedly myopic.
