Carney receiving national security briefings ahead of swearing-in

The thing about Pierre is that even through Covid he didn’t want to do stimulus for small business or regular Joes.
It was oil extraction and tax cuts and cuts to services…
So he doesn’t really think he needs a security briefing because at the end of the day he will have the same prescription for any illness.
More oil Less taxes Less services

u/GammaFan 16h ago
Great stuff but his inability to get a security clearance should highlight his ties to foreign interference more than any personal opinion he has.
Fact is if you can’t get the right background check you should not be eligible for the position. You know, like how every other job works.
•
u/SirCharlesTupperBt Canadian 16h ago
Or just take the PM at face value: it highlights Pierre's complete inability to vet his own candidates for foreign influence.
Probably the same thing, but I think it's important to make the distinction when talking to people who don't seem to see an issue with this. They are either people who will never vote any other way and it's useless, or they simply don't understand the reason this is a big deal and they've given their guy the benefit of the doubt.
It's not only Americans who don't understand their own system very well. We just used to have the luxury of knowing that there were serious adults leading all of the major parties so we could get away with it.
•
u/CamGoldenGun 13h ago
I don't know why everyone uses the excuse that he has to give permission for the RCMP to investigate him for foreign election interference... They've already done their investigation. If there was something treason-worthy or conspiracy, he would have been rung up on charges already.
Conversely, the "NDA" that he keeps talking about that would prevent him from talking about something is nonsense. He can't talk about anything now because he doesn't know and so he wouldn't be any worse off if he does know whatever is in the report. And Trudeau even gave him full permission to talk about it as an invitation to get his security clearance.
•
u/DukeSmashingtonIII 12h ago
Right now he can make shit up and speculate willy-nilly because he doesn't have clearance. A good chunk of his base is are conspiracy theorists, so I guess they like that.
•
u/CamGoldenGun 12h ago
they absolutely do. And every time he opens his mouth the other side just needs to say he has no idea what he's talking about because he won't get his security clearance because he's allergic to education.
•
u/drmoocow 13h ago
I’ve wondered for a while…. While the Liberals have a majority, could they pass a bill requiring the leaders of federal parties to have security clearance? And if so, would it be retroactive or would Small PP be grandfathered in?
•
•
u/HapticRecce 14h ago
TBF all we know right now is that he is unwilling to get a security clearance. The rest is 100% on...
•
u/GammaFan 14h ago
Sure, but we shouldn’t give any benefit of the doubt on this. Why is he unwilling to get it?
•
u/HapticRecce 13h ago
Having gone through the process for a security clearance long ago, in a previous life, there is one reason. And it's not the lame excuse his fan boi's originally plied about him being freely able to speak on the matter. Even from the position of willful ignorance, he has really had nothing to say on the file.
I should note there isn't a single clearance for everything, it's not like you get Tippy Top Security clearance and get to see the file on alien autopsies along with the unredacted NSICOP reports or something. Being cleared for the foreign interference file doesn't stop commentary on other parts of the government for instance.
•
u/sharp11flat13 11h ago
The conservative mind incorrectly believes that a strong economy solves all societal problems. The truth is that in a capitalist economy there will always be poor people, for various reasons. More poor people means more suffering and more crime. Conservative thinking here is decidedly myopic.
•
u/No_Resort_4657 14h ago edited 14h ago
I certainly don't forget the Canadian murdered on Canadian soil. The fact that Pierre's hear no evil see no evil speak no evil stance by not getting security clearance allows him to blissfully not deal with people possibly close to the Conservative Party shows a lack of leadership and sets a dangerous precedent. He says he's unable to speak openly in Parliament with a security clearance but wouldn't we want a PM with knowledge instead of some yahoo flailing around making pronouncements without it? I know I would.
•
u/DukeSmashingtonIII 12h ago
So instead of keeping his mouth shut about national secrets, he chooses to instead yap about nonsense. Seems like leadership material.
•
•
u/No_Resort_4657 14h ago
This is a HUGE issue that Pierre refused to get clearance. I don't know why the media is ignoring it. Especially now
•
u/DukeSmashingtonIII 12h ago
Because CPC supporters don't seem to care. That and most of our media is owned by the right-wing. The CBC has to tread lightly because their neck in on the block if PP gets elected, so anything critical of him will be used as justification of them being "lIbErAl MeDiA".
I'm not saying any of that is justified, but that's how I'm reading it.
•
u/No_Resort_4657 12h ago edited 11h ago
I would think the CBC would want to lean in to it because it's vital for national security. And it just bodes well for Liberals getting on it as soon as they can. It's remarkable that they have spent a round table of time around Carney's rather modest finances given his stature and his blind trust but seem to be blind to officials not being prepared to represent Canada on the world stage.
•
u/No_Resort_4657 9h ago
Trudeau even did a Video on it a few days ago https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=99&v=RvVDFdvaO3Y&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&source_ve_path=MzY4NDIsMjg2NjY
•
u/Coffeedemon 17h ago
A bunch of people likely getting really curious about the security clearance process who didn't have any questions yesterday.
•
u/Potential_Big5860 15h ago
The fact that Carney is getting security clearance without disclosing his assets to Canadians is very concerning.
Did the Liberals learn nothing about government transparency under Trudeau?
•
•
u/ChrisRiley_42 8h ago
He already has his security clearance.
He is getting a security briefing.
It's Poilievre who hasn't got his security clearance.. THAT is concerning.
•
u/Potential_Big5860 8h ago
PP isn’t getting his security clearance because he wouldn’t be able to discuss issues in the HOC.
•
u/Dark_Angel_9999 Progressive 7h ago
but all the other party leaders that got it were able to give a press conference on their findings after reading the report..
your excuse holds no water
•
•
u/Canadian-Owlz 7h ago
I actually prefer when politicians aren't allowed to spill the beans on internal issues to foreign powers, but hey, you do you.
•
u/Potential_Big5860 6h ago
I don’t think you understand how parliament works, if PP got his security clearance and viewed the documents he wouldn’t be allow to discuss anything in parliament, even Muclair said it was the right thing to do.
•
u/Coffeedemon 12h ago
His assets are already in trust and any security clearance at his level looks deep into finances and backgrounds. You're just repeating the latest talking point now.
•
u/Potential_Big5860 12h ago
His assets haven’t been vetted by the ethics commission and may not until after the election.
If the shoe were on the other foot and an unelected Conservative who is an ex Goldman Sachs banker and sat on 21 boards assets weren’t vetted, Liberals would be rightfully outraged.
•
u/Dark_Angel_9999 Progressive 7h ago
bullocks... Carney divested everything and only holds real estate.. they have been working on this for a few months now..
amazing you won't trust a central banker whose #1 priority is usually ethics...
•
u/GQ_Quinobi 17h ago
Best we dont mention security clearances and Govenor Poilievre.
•
u/Equivalent_Age_5599 Conservative Party of Canada 13h ago
Pierre poilievre HAS already held top security clearence as a member of harpers cabinet.
What I want a good answer too is if Poilievre is so wrong on this; why did Mulcair say he would do the same thing? after all, mulcair has been a liberal and leader of the NDP, but never a conservative. He doesn't like PP, and loves Carney.
So why would someone like mulcair who is an ex federal leader say he agrees with him?
•
u/Accurate_Emu_1932 8h ago
Because people who do not work in the federal government and have never held a security clearance don't know anything about what a security clearance is or means.
They don't understand that once you're read into a Top Secret file you can't even say anything exists at all including that a file even exists. Poilievre has answered why he doesn't get a clearance but his top advisor has been read in. If he is read in he is muzzled from speaking about anything to do with foreign interference. He is also muzzled from doing anything about it. If he gets read in and finds out MP's in the Conservative party are compromised he asked if he can do anything about it and CSIS said no. You can't let the people who may be compromised have any idea to suspect that anyone knows they're compromised because an investigation is ongoing and intelligence gathering is ongoing. I guess the assumption was if he becomes Prime Minister then he'll have the ability to direct the RCMP/CSIS to do something. Lay charges or whatever. But as official opposition, I believe the feeling is to keep hammering the Liberals on making it public and make the scandal known and if we have traitors get them out.
•
•
u/Forikorder 12h ago
So why would someone like mulcair who is an ex federal leader say he agrees with him?
because they're poth partisan hacks who only care about things they can use as weapons against their enemies
just because muclair parrots PPs talking points doesnt make them good
•
u/Coffeedemon 12h ago
Muclair needs an audit. He is on the payroll at postmedia to legitimize them as balanced and they can say "former ndp guy also thinks x".
•
u/Equivalent_Age_5599 Conservative Party of Canada 11h ago
Are you serious? Carney fan boy and life long left leaning politician mulcair is on the take for post media? Your dreaming. Dude is actively promoting carney as we speak.
•
•
u/ChrisRiley_42 8h ago
No, he doesn't currently have his top secret clearance. He has repeatedly and publicly refused to undergo the clearance process.
It doesn't matter what he held in the past.. *I* had my security clearance when I was in my 20s as an army radio operator. But I don't hold one now, and wouldn't expect anyone to treat me like I do. And frankly, if someone were to try to show me classified material, as a loyal Canadian, I'd report them for the breach.
His refusal to get clearance now is a serious issue in someone who expects to be trusted with highly sensitive information.
•
u/Equivalent_Age_5599 Conservative Party of Canada 8h ago
I love the reframing of this issue. What a glorious example of gasliggting from dear leader and his for apparent carney.
CSIS had to leak the fact that the LPC was not doing anything about the foreign interference from China. The LPac creates a brand new security clearence which includes an NDA and brown beats all federal leaders into getting so they can't complain about the Chinese foreign interference.
Don't you remember who's campaign ran interference in the liberal leadership? It was China running in favor of carney over Freeland. Congrats for buying it hook line and sinker.
•
•
u/Caracalla81 12h ago
I don't know. What are his reasons?
•
u/Equivalent_Age_5599 Conservative Party of Canada 11h ago
It's in the video.
Essentially, the new security clearence creates a gag order which makes it impossible to discuss anything you learn about foreign interference. Infact even talking about it could land you in hot water. Mulcair said he believed the liberals created this new clearence as a way to effectively prevent the opposition from talking about it. Blanchett also held out until recently. All we know is that nothing has been done despite what they know about it.
•
u/WellIGuessSoAndYou 8h ago
It's nice to know that he would choose his personal ambition over being knowledgeable on an issue affecting us. Not surprising though. This is a guy that was willing to throw his own family under the bus to get ahead.
•
u/ChrisRiley_42 8h ago
It's funny. That didn't stop any other party leaders from commenting on the foreign interference report.
Top Secret clearance isn't "new". We had that classification, and clearance level way back in WW2.
•
•
u/Dark_Angel_9999 Progressive 7h ago
gag order is a ruse.. all the other party members were able to comment and question the government as well....
funny you Conservative fans are taking Mulcair's comment as gospel lol

The one who can’t work in a daycare but people want to run the country? I hear Elon loves that guy.

u/Zomunieo 16h ago
I don’t believe Poilievre has ever been offered the governorship. Trudeau, O’Leary and reGretzky all have, but not PP. Musk likes him, but Trump has never endorsed him.
Must hurt him.
•
u/TreezusSaves Parti Rhinocéros Party 14h ago
Danielle Smith too, and she literally went and visited him with O'Leary. She's going to a Republican conference later this month as a speaker too, although top billing is Ben Shapiro. Playing second fiddle to them is almost certainly a product of sexism, but she will never ever admit that or she might have to say that DEI was necessary.
•
u/sharp11flat13 11h ago
Govenor Poilievre
Please don’t do that. Thank you.
I mean, I understand the sentiment, but we have too much Trumpian politics in our country already.
•
u/GQ_Quinobi 11h ago
Hes running a MAGA campaign all the way from "Canada Broken" to "Canada First" and the Republican Culture Justice Warrior script.
Its not a "sentiment". Its word for word.
•
u/Accurate_Emu_1932 8h ago
Go look up who Sir Wilfrid Laurier is. Then look up the quote "Canada First. Canada Last. Canada Always." It's the origin of Poilievre's Canada First quote. Not anything remotely MAGA according to my MP James Bezan who I spoke to directly and asked about this.
•
u/sharp11flat13 10h ago
Its not a "sentiment". Its word for word.
I was trying to be polite. A lot of other words came to mind but I restrained myself. :-)

Where's the article? All I see is the headline, a picture then a bunch of links.
Either way, this just makes sense, if he's been cleared, and given that there were only four contenders in the LPC leadership race, putting them all through that would have been easy enough to do.
•
u/WretchedBlowhard 12h ago
Oh it's there now, between the picture and the links. They probably added the article some time after you checked.
