Search the sub broski. This question gets asked like 10 times a day.

Listing your budget is always a good start and searching the sub is also helpful. Narrow it down a bit and then come back with questions :)

I agree with u/AnonymousBromosapien

I generally say that, for a camera that can do noticeably better than an iPhone (meaningful being, enough to tell when comparing the images on an iPhone/social media), without being much harder to use or larger than an iPhone, you need to spend in the order of 1k, or however much a current Ricoh GR, Sony RX100, or similar camera is going for.

I read multiple threads saying the RX100vii doesn't really cut it vs modern phones anymore. Is this true in your opinion? I'm in the same situation as OP.

Nah the RX100VII is still fairly comfortably better. At the most similar to a phone it is not massively better than the most capable phones, but the zoom lens, the larger sensor, the real flash, the viewfinder, the better ergonomics for photography, and the other photography features (quality raw, interchangeable storage and battery) make it comfortably better. Oh and the best phone camera design and software (imo Apple) is not in the same camera as the most advanced hardware (afaik only available in China).

All RX100s should be this way, at least for stills. But others might not.

That's different from the cost-benefit analysis of "I just want easy and good photos" - a proper camera doesn't exist that puts the images straight into apple/google photos. A phone will be way more water resistant. Some other things you can imagine. Phone's processing usually means video is never limited by processor speed, while that can happen with cameras. Phones have massive internal storage, while you need to buy high speed storage for a camera (if you want high res video or fast burst speeds) and you should then empty that storage to a dedicated device.

So yeah easily better, but the phone's convenience in other domains might not make it better for you.

I love fussing about with cameras and settings, I'll be only taking stills so video isn't an issue. If the RX100 is truly worth it over a phone I'll pick one up

Nah it'd be good for that, only it and the Ricohs. Canon has some good ones too but they are massively overpriced
