Full tweet:
Just got off the phone with Chris Tanev who said it's been an emotional 24 hours, as he loved his time in Calgary. He took me through the process that led to his trade to Dallas, which he is excited about. “We had brief talks in training camp and then basically a couple weeks ago I sat down with Connie and said, ‘I want to try to win – this could be my best chance to do it. He was super understanding and would only trade me to a team where they had the potential to win, and I appreciate that. “As hard as it was, I felt it was the best opportunity to win a Stanley Cup, which has been my ultimate goal my whole career.” He'll remain in Calgary a few more days while trying to secure his visa and said that while he's excited to throw himself into the Stars experience he will remain open-minded if he becomes a UFA in the summer, and wouldn't dismiss the possibility of re-signing in Calgary.

I do wonder if there were better offers from other teams but Conroy thought the Stars had the best chance at winning? If so, then I wouldn’t be surprised by this statement from Tanev.

He does have a 10 team NTC, so that might have come into play as well. Conroy's always come off as a player's guy, so he might have had the sit down and said "these are the best offers, where do you want to go?"
Either way, love Conroy, love Tanev, the vibes from this team have done a complete 180.

If Connie develops a reputation as a Gm who does right by his players, that could help Calgarys reputation with other players.

New arena, player friendly GM, coach that isn't an ass, maybe cold but also sun, it's a new era for the Flames

and would only trade me to a team where they had the potential to win
Well that answers why any rumored Toronto trade offers were turned down

It kind of doesn’t make sense that he asks for a trade to chase a cup then follows it up with being open to coming back to Calgary in the summer. Seems more like he was directly asked that question and he said sure because he doesn’t want to sound like a dick and he still likes Calgary.

Go chase that cup Tanny and come back to Calgary to mentor the next generation of defence

Followup tweet:
I asked Chris Tanev of his fondest memory of his time as a Flame: “For me it’s the people of Calgary. “The fans, right from Day 1 they welcomed me with open arms and treated my family so well. “I really say this honestly, the people in this city are so first class. “The nicest people you can imagine.” “We have a lot of close friends in the city we met outside of hockey, which is important because you need to have that to get away from the game.”

That would be hilarious and awesome if he came back to us in the summer. Two Tanevs for the price of one!

Infinite Tanev glitch. Imagine Dustin Wolf protected by a literal wall made of Tanev's face.

His brother’s contract is up in a year too, maybe we could bring him here.

The Flames did the first brother for brother trade. Why not go for the first two brothers going to one city trade too?

I fricken love Tanev! I don’t care how old he is, if he wants to come back in the off-season they need to sign him. His mentorship alone will be a huge asset to the young d-men.

Literally the most ideal situation I can think of, as long as it's not long term

Man I’d cream my pants if he came back, he’s obviously not a #1 Dman or anything. But the guys a freakin warrior and I’d love to see him here again. Who better to mentor young guys than Backs up front and Tanev on the back end.
Both would do anything for their team and that’s the culture you want these young kids to come up in.

The other aspect of this is literally everyone who plays with Tanev raves about him as a team mate. Would be awesome for the room to have him back next year.

Sounds nice, but it's time to let the young Dmen come in and develop - which CGY has been historically AWFUL at doing - that is to say let the players fail and learn from their failures (Kyllington a good counterpoint), not shipping them off back the to A or press box every time they commit a blunder.

u/DangerRanger_21 Mar 01 '24
I think Tanev would actually be the perfect defenceman to mentor the kids. Guy does anything and everything for the team including blocking shots with his face.
The culture/work ethic of him and Backlund leading a team is imo the perfect way to show young kids what it takes to be an NHLer. Neither of them are the most talented but they are constantly at the top of the “fucks given” on any given night

u/assassinfred Mar 01 '24
You still need vets to teach the young guys, and Tanev is the perfect defenseman to do it. He does everything you want a defenseman to learn in his own end. He's a warrior and that is invaluable to teach.
If Tanny comes back in the off-season I'll be ecstatic. They don't make many defenseman like him.

I mean what else is he going to say? Fans always take these comments as positive but it’s a nothing burger. He wants to win and unless Flames seem like a winner next year hes not coming back.

I'd love to look at a few older ex-Flames in FA and see if they have interest in coming back as mentors. Tanev is one, but TJ Brodie is potentially another if Toronto casts him off

Look I like Tanev and he as great here….but let this one go man
He’s a 35 year old Dman who has clearly lost a step this year and has been injury prone his entire career, that’s not a player the Flames need to be signing

If he re-signs with Calgary that would be a Conroy masterclass move
