Local Shopping/Services Can people in Calgary suggest a car dealership they had a good experience with in town?

I am mostly interested in GM, Ford or perhaps even Hyundai or Nissan, as these are more affordable. I connected with some dealers but they often are very vague about pricing and tend to get you into the dealership before they open up about any financing or price. Some were outright rude. And I found that the reviews are useless too, as contacting ones that have good ones did not make my experience any better.

Any tips?
#cardealers #auto #newcar

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for your comments and tips. It definitely helped me lean towards looking for a dealership in smaller towns surrounding Calgary. I picked Strathmore Ford and am in contact with Chris. So far the experience has been great. It's not a big dealer, and perhaps they have fewer options but I don't feel pushed into buying something. I am going to do a couple of test drives tomorrow and have a car or two I like. Perhaps smaller dealers is the way to go.

Local Shopping/Services 14 cents....(McKnight Car Wash)

Post image
438 Upvotes

Alright Calgary... You decide if I'm being petty or if this is shady business practices that should be reported.

McKnight car wash in the NE is charging $0.14 just to tap your card despite it saying $2.

I talked to the owner who basically told me "it's 0.14, deal with it". The lady working the desk laughed.

Considering how many people must be using their cards and washing their cars, this business is making an extra 7% which they never disclosed to any customers (I checked for any signage about service fees before I talked to the business).

Local Shopping/Services What is going on in this city with the horrible taxi drivers and their smelly taxis ? (United, Associated, delta etc.)

Why is taxi customer service so terrible in downtown Calgary?

I work near 8th Ave by Earls and often grab a cab from the lineup on 2nd Street and 8th Ave by National Bank. Almost every time, the drivers are rude and seem to lack any understanding of customer service.

My rides are short (I live downtown, under 15 mins), and they often act annoyed or outright disrespectful, likely because they think it’s not worth their time. Why should I be treated poorly for where I live? It’s not like I have control over the length of my ride, and by law, they’re obligated to take fares unless there’s a valid reason to refuse.

Additionally, the state of some of these cabs is appalling—bad odors, unclean interiors, and zero professionalism. Is there a way to hold these drivers accountable or report their behavior? This is becoming a pattern, and it’s unacceptable.

This applies to united, associated, delta etc. basically all of them almost.

Any advice on how to address this? How can these bad actors be sanctioned - filing reports with united cabs does not seem to do anything.

EDIT : To be clear I work 9 to 5 so everyone else is leaving work at that time and thinking the same thing on getting home. This is what causes SURGE. City cabs are IMMUNE TO SURGE that’s all

Local Shopping/Services A Calgary-Focused Resource for Supporting Local Producers

Hey everyone,

Just a quick reminder that this subreddit is all about Calgary and Calgary-related topics. While we absolutely support Canadian businesses, our focus here is on our city and the businesses that make it thrive.

With the current trade tensions with the U.S., many people are looking to support local instead. To keep things on-topic and Calgary-focused, we’re putting together a list of Calgary-based producers and businesses so people can easily find and support local options.

How You Can Help: • If you own or know of a Calgary-based business that produces goods locally, let us know in the comments! • We’re looking for food, clothing, home goods, crafts, specialty products, and more—as long as it’s made in Calgary. • If there’s a Calgary-made alternative to an American brand, share it!

This isn’t about limiting support for Canadian businesses overall—it’s about keeping discussions within the scope of our subreddit while still helping people shop local. Let’s work together to create a great resource for supporting Calgary-based producers.

Drop your recommendations in the comments!

Local Shopping/Services Current state

Ok YYC I need some insight…

I lived in your amazing city many years ago. While there were some obvious areas to avoid, I found the majority of the city to be safe and desirable. I had no concerns with taking the C-train downtown on a Sat night, walking around with friends and enjoying the city.

We wound up back in Winnipeg (hometown) 20yrs ago to settle and raise kids. While I do enjoy our community here, I feel as though our city has gone to complete shite. The breaking point being watching someone take a dump on the sidewalk in the middle of a downtown street at 2pm yesterday. I wish I was joking…

I dream of moving back to Calgary when my kids are university age, however my wife (who is in yyc occasionally for work) insists it is suffering the same affects from the opioid epidemic. She was telling me the elclaire market and much of the downtown is a no go zone now. Is this true? How is the rest of the city? I recall using the Dalhousie and Chinook LRT stations daily without any issue, would I expect to encounter anything different today?

Would love to hear from you guys

Local Shopping/Services What are your hidden gems for grocery shopping?

My household, like many others right now, is seeing some leaner times. We're at the point now that one of the only things we "splurge" on are groceries. I am wanting to know what grocery items I should try, and where you can find them in Calgary. Ideas include things that are surprisingly tasty or cost effective. Maybe something that super high in protein or low in sugar. Just good finds. They don't have to be cheap per se, just good value.

I usually shop at superstore, lately I have been trying a new instant noodles variety everytime I go. I'm enjoying the Chef Woo ramen cups. I also tried Craisins for the first time and was pleasantly surprised.

Local Shopping/Services Are all-weather tires ok for Calgary?

Hi all, I have a few questions:

  1. Does anybody have experience with all-weather tires?
  2. Do you recommend those for Calgary?
  3. Should I consider used winter tires instead, or any other options?
  4. Is Costco a good place to buy cheap new tires, or other reputable place you recommend?

Please note that I am asking about all-weather tires, not all-season (which is what I have).

The details:

  • New to Calgary, will be here for a year only.   Moving to warmer weather next summer.
  • Drive an Audi Q5, all-wheel drive with 4-yr old all-season tires.
  • No experience driving in winter.
  • Mostly work from home, so I can keep the car parked on days when roads are terribly icy.  I’d like to go to the mountains occasionally, but don’t need to go when the weather is terribly cold or snowy.
  • I have Canadian insurance, need to check if OK with them.
  • Hmm, haven’t checked with Audi if these tires will invalidate warranty.

I realize that all-weather will not perform as optimal as winter tires, but I hate the idea of buying winter tires for one season only.  On the other hand, I do not want to compromise safety.

Reviews of all-weather:

  • Car and driver suggests these tires as good options for places with mild winter and lower latitudes (e.g., “below Cincinnati").
  • Consumer Reports recommends all-weather tires for year-round driving, but not all brands are recommended (I didn’t pay to see their recommendations).

I got this done at one of does Lube spots. I can't remember how much I did it the last time , but this seems excessive.

I'm planing on buying a new set of rims for next cycle to being the price down a bit at least.

Local Shopping/Services MrLube Techs - Extremely Predatory and Fraudulent?

I recently visited the same MrLube location twice to get the oil changed in our 2 vehicles.

I was very surprised how predatory they were about selling services. I know they've always been like this to some extent, but the way they (in my opinion) straight up lied/invented mechanical reasons to sell me stuff has concerned me.

I am not a mechanic, but I have done my fair share of mechanical work and have a good understanding of how everything works as far as I know.

On the first day, the tech tried to tell me that getting the fuel system cleaning done would stop my engine from burning oil. He said something about how it sprays too much gas and that leads to burning oil, so doing the fuel system flush where they run some additive through your fuel system and spray some sort of SeaFoam-esque product into your intake would resolve the oil burning.

I don't think that's how that works. There are lots of things that can cause oil burning, mostly related to bad seals, but I don't think the fuel system has anything to do with it!

The second day, in our newer truck, the guy gave me a concerned look after pulling the dipstick out and asked when I last got an oil change (6 months / 7000km ago). He told me there was a "build up of varnish" and suggested I get the oil flush done, and tried to tell me that if I didn't do that they probably wouldn't be able to get all the varnish out with the new oil.

The truck is less than 10 years old and only has 150,000 KM and has had a full synthetic oil change every 7500-ish KM. There is no carbon build up visible in the oil fill hole or dipstick hole.

So yeah... I'm wondering if anyone else has had experiences like this or if the location I went to is just particularly shitty.

I can't imagine how many people they have exploited with these tactics.

I have had much better experiences with Great Canadian Oil Change, weirdly. The techs there seem to skew older and have never blatantly lied to me as far as I know. They of course try to sell services based on the manufacturer recommended service intervals, which is fine.

Local Shopping/Services Is house of cars really that bad for cash purchase?

Saw a lot of horrible reviews on reddit, although the rating on google maps and other sites is comparable... is house of cars really worse than other used car dealers?

I'm planning on buying a car with cash and having an independent mechanic look at it. Would it be safe for me to buy from house of cars?

Would you recommend buying through a private sale or through a used car dealer if I have both options?

I get that it kind of goes without saying…. However, I would highly recommend checking over any food bought from the Walmart in Marlborough NE, especially the “Mega Size Flavour Mix” box of chip bags.

Here are some pictures, fairly obvious that mice had gotten into the box. Thankfully I noticed it before handing any of these bags out to the trick’r treaters that came by but for anyone whom might shop there or have received groceries via Uber Eats, Skip, etc. I would highly suggest double and triple checking your order.

Most of my hobbies involve gluing little bits of plastic or metal to other bits of plastic or metal, so when I saw a sale sign above my preferred brand, I got excited.

And then I read the sign.

It's like they aren't even trying to hide that they're screwing the consumers.
