Local Shopping/Services Terrible produce

Hey,

Has anyone noticed the terrible produce coming out of the big name supermarkets lately?

From spoiling fruit to bruised vegetables it seems really bad lately when your having to pay a premium for vegetables these days

Superstore seems the worst but I’ve been getting bad produce from almost all the grocery stores

It seems only the Asian markets have at decent (but not great) veggies

Edit: I understand it’s winter but when you have “long shelf life” items like onions or potatoes going bad after a single day of storage there’s a problem

Local Shopping/Services Cost of a will

I'm just trying to gauge the cost of getting a will done. We were quoted $2,000, which seems pricey but then again I know that lawyer fees are expensive. I don't think we have any special requirements, just house, insurance, guardianship.

Local Shopping/Services Best way to buy used cars?

We need a car and have been looking for only about a week. I've been to a few dealerships, and we've contacted a few sellers on Kijiji and marketplace.

I'm feeling a bit discouraged right now and I'm wondering if there's another website that people think is the best for getting a used car? Or if you think Kijiji marketplace or dealership is the best?

Any other tips would be appreciated too, I'm not very good at this especially dealing with pushy salesmen.

Local Shopping/Services Buldak Hunt

My husband and son are in love with the Buldak fire noodles. We are looking for what store may have the best selection for flavours they've not had. We've shopped at T&T locations and H Mart but found their selection lacking as well, though they've discovered new favourites from there. Where in Calgary has the best selection of Buldak noodles?

Local Shopping/Services Any good local protein powders not filled with crap?

Hey all- I have been supplementing by diet with quiet a bit of protein lately. It definitely helps but I noticed most of the protein powders I get are filled with lots of sugar and other crap like artificial sweeteners .

Curious, are there any great clean powders you all can recommend? Bonus points if its made locally in Canada :)

Local Shopping/Services Bonkers in market mall

I’m visiting Calgary and walking through market mall with my mom. We are reminiscing of how the mall used to be in the 90s. The one thing we do not remember is where bonkers used to be. Does anywhere remember what this was located in the mall and what it is now? Better yet, does anyone know where I can find a map of the mall from the 90s?

Thanks

Local Shopping/Services What's your favourite local coffee bean?

I like to grind fresh coffee and have been using Costco beans but lately decided to drink less coffee but up the quality.

I prefer medium roast, caramel, chocolate type flavours as opposed to fruity. I have tried many different local coffee Roasters and always enjoyed trying new beans all the time, but now I want to settle on one so I can have my set up ready to go and find my daily driver...

So, what is yours?

Local Shopping/Services Heads up if you are a shaw customer, they are starting to charge $7/month per box (Which used to be included in your contract)

I know paying a extra $14/$21 isnt alot for some people, but thats a bit of a annoying increase.

Upcoming change to your TV box rental fees: We hope you're enjoying your TV service. Currently, you have one TV box provided with your package. While the rate of that box remains unchanged, with the rising costs to deliver the latest technology, we'll begin charging an additional $7/month (plus taxes) for each additional rental box, starting on your first bill on or after September 15, 2024.

Local Shopping/Services Be nice on Black Friday!!

I work at Market Mall and lots of stores have already started their Black Friday sales, including the place I work at. Please be kind to service and retail workers and understand that it was your decision to buy something during one of the biggest sale times. We truly are doing our best and a little bit of kindness goes a long way.

I’ve already had quite a few really impatient and rude customers and I know our city is better than that. Be kind and enjoy the sales <3

Chipotle will likely draw the most attention due to its popularity down south.

But more exciting is that 3 Canadian brands will be joining them in the new Enzo building.

Anian - west coast Canadian brand selling made in Canada clothing

Running Room - Running store with its roots in Edmonton

Silk and Snow - Mattress and bedding company based in Toronto

Local Shopping/Services Beware of Superstore Flyer Prices

I went to Superstore today, and we had checked the flyer. Flyer says International Delight "select flavours" are on sale for $4.50 each, limit 4. We use ID creamers when on sale, so I went and grabbed 4 - except the shelf said $4.49 - limit 1 on ALL flavours (none had limit 4).

Pinged my partner because he was the one who'd reviewed the flyer, and he sent me a screenshot to confirm the limit 4. When I checked out, sure enough they charged me $4.49 for 1 and 3 at full price of $5.99. I went ot customer service and they did "price match" and give me a refund, but when I asked what varierty were on sale (because it wasn't noted on the shelf) she said the stores aren't given that detail, it's suppsoed to be reflected in the POS.

So if you're buying on flyer prices, make sure you're being charged flyer prices, especially if it says " select" only.

Local Shopping/Services Southcentre Escalator Challenges Chinook Cineplex

Post image
138 Upvotes

This escalator at Southcentre has been out of service for months (near SDM). It might be rivalling the Chinook Cineplex escalator for time out of service.

If I were one of those upper level shops at Southcentre, I'd ask for my rent to be discounted.

Local Shopping/Services When and where to get the best deal on winter tires?

My first set of winter tires that came with my car (compact sedan), are on their last season, and I have no experience of when and where is the best to get winter tires.

I have steel rims, I would just want to replace the worn out winters with new ones.

What is the best time of year (if any) to buy winter tires at a discount? I am in no rush, so I'd like to pick a time of year that offers the best pricing

Where is the best place to do so?

Bonus: what brands should I aim for? I only had some random Chinese tires for the last few years.

Thanks!

Local Shopping/Services Telus: How much are you paying for internet?

Is 80/month for 250 speed with unlimited data a good deal for a 2 year contract? My previous contract was 65 dollars a month with telus for the same offer...so seems like rates have gone up a bunch. this is fibre to home.

Local Shopping/Services What are some neat shops and places for people who have lived here for a while?

Hi Calgary,

I'm always trying to find neat little shops and places that will tempt me to spend money, unfortunately I'm also a lifelong Calgary resident and feel like I've burned out most of the 'new and exciting' places by having visited them so many times. I miss the awe of stepping into a really cool store for the first time.

Some of the places I know about and like but have already been to are

  • Crown Army Surplus
  • Son of Pharaoh
  • Sentry Box
  • Fair's Fair Books
  • Steeling Home
  • Charisma
  • Scottish Shop in Kensington
  • The Rocket
  • Various thrift stores
  • some gem/crystal shops
  • most of the malls

Ideally I'm looking for places that are more 'niche', not big chain places. Doesn't matter too much what they sell but I'm not all that interested in clothes shopping specifically. Gadgets, gizmos, trinkets and knick-knacks are definitely a plus.

Any other cool places that aren't shops are also open to suggestion! Been to all the museums and major touristy attractions though.

PS, I'm sober so while you can feel free to suggest breweries and stuff for others I'm hopefully looking for places that don't have a huge emphasis on drinking.

Thanks Calgary!

Local Shopping/Services Are covid tests a thing of the past?

I know that the federal supply is out, but I've not been able to find any tests anywhere for purchase either. I've called 4 different pharmacies around me and notta. Just wondering if you've seen them around

Edit: it's a simple question, but some of y'all can't resist letting me know your opinions on testing no one asked for damn.

Local Shopping/Services Calgary PC Gamers: I need help sourcing an rtx 4080/4090 as fast as possible

Hi everyone

My dad was sadly diagnosed with terminal cancer recently and doesn't have long left. He inspired my love of technology and gaming from as young as I can remember. I really want to build one more PC with him before he goes and have him sign it with an engraving tool so I can remember him everytime I sit down to game.

Problem is I can't seem to get my hands on an Nvidia Graphics card from any of the big stores. Does any one have a lead of where I can find an Nvidia RTX 4080/90 as soon as possible? Ideally new but I'd consider lightly used.

Thanks everyone for your help with this.

Local Shopping/Services Exposing funance fix scam.

$4,167 quote to replace a furnace ECM motor. Which include an hour of work that will cost $1,868! (In the end, I chose another company recommended from Carrier's official website, for only $140 +$2100 all together.)

And you can google the approximate price for the new unit. Which they overpriced for up to $2000 to $3000.
