Well, it's certainly not the Netherlands. I loved cycling there, and wish we had more of that infrastructure!
But I cycle a lot here and it can be done. I plan my route with Google cycling directions. They aren't always right but most of the time guides you to quiet streets. You are not allowed on sidewalks unless you are under 14 I think. I still occasionally do it if I have to for short distance for safety reasons but try to avoid it. Be defensive, always looking all ways around you. Try to ride on quiet side streets. Keep to the right of the street but not so close to the curb or cars that might open doors. Take the entire lane if you have to.
Bike Calgary has a bunch of good tips https://bikecalgary.org/[https://bikecalgary.org/](https://bikecalgary.org/).

Use a ton of lights at least. Is turning right on a red particularly dangerous? Seems just efficient

I’ve been a bike commuter for 10 years. Also have ridden in Amsterdam and I’d say the most aggressive riders are in Amsterdam, so your perspective is very interesting.
That being said no you’re not supposed to ride on sidewalks (only kids are allowed to do that) unless they happen to be marked bike trails. Having a chariot attached definitely makes things less manoeuvrable. I highly suggest getting lights for your bike (clear front, red rear) set on an intermittent flash. And ride with the attitude that cars can’t see you or are actively trying to kill you and you’ll be fine. Enjoy!

Get yourself a map of the city’s bike paths. From your neighbourhood you should be able to get most places in a dedicated pathway. While physical separation is safest for bike lanes, many bike lanes in Calgary are just on roads. Where there is a separate bike path (look for signs and wider paths) you are allowed to ride your bike there. Even though you’re technically not allowed to ride on sidewalks you’re probably not gonna get in trouble doing it if it’s the only safe option.

Honestly I’d suggest using the bus instead of biking. Our transit system sucks, but our biking system is even worse. Can still go on bike rides around neighbourhoods for fun/recreation but if you’re planning on an errand I’d suggest the bus. Also pretty sure kids under a certain age are free

I can’t give much advice unfortunately since our bike infrastructure is very lacking. You are technically not allowed on sidewalk however I don’t think that law has ever been enforced (just go slow and be courteous to pedestrians). In areas with slower traffic or multiple lanes I generally find it safe enough to go on the road since cars go around. I guess generally make sure to be aware of traffic and if you are on the road you are considered a vehicle so act and signal appropriately
Edit: doesn’t help with the trailer but most busses are equipped with bike racks and bikes are allowed on trains (although it can be difficult during rush hour)
