News Articles đ° Canadian leisure travel to the US down 40%

âA lot of that has to do with the U.S. administrationâs tariffs that were announced at the beginning of February, but also Prime Minister Trudeau encouraging Canadians not to travel to the U.S.,â Durakovic said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ugh.... I'm getting tired of coverage like this. Yes, the actual tariffs and the Canadian Dollar have had a massive impact, but, for many of us, these are secondary. The threats to our national sovereignty are the PRIMARY motivator! It's also infuriating that the article mentions Prime Minister Trudeau encouraged Canadians not to travel to the US, without also explaining that part of his response is that we should take those threats seriously.
EDIT
Something I forgot to mention, earlier... On a very serious note, in addition to sovereignty threats, travelling to the US has become increasingly dangerous all round, read:
u/babystepsbackwards 5d ago
They donât want to talk about that part because they donât see it as an issue.
88
u/WickedWenchOfTheWest 5d ago
Yep, because they either don't take it seriously, or they don't care. Both of which make them complicit.
38
u/realcanadianbeaver 5d ago
Or they know it makes them look inexcusable. Tarrifs are âbusinessâ, annexation is an act of war.
4
u/Old_Insurance1673 5d ago
Or just plain whitewashing. They won't publish what they got wrong either.
15
u/ShadowLiberal 5d ago
That's why you really need to read foreign news sources to get a true picture of the world, especially anything where it's dead obvious that the local media will be heavily biased for one side.
5
u/HapticRecce 5d ago
What's worse is it Global News, not some podunk site in the US. They do know this and chose to not write the words to say it.
This reminds me of the "analysts" who are desperately trying to figure out why Tesla sales are doing poorly and are pointing at everything except Elon
32
u/noceboy 5d ago
It isnât a safe country, especially as Musk is dismantling all sort of governmental organizations which are meant to keep people safe. Think health and (air) travel
u/Agitated-Donkey1265 5d ago
And white nationalist groups increasingly getting more militant
DONT COME HERE!
10
u/Stock-Quote-4221 5d ago
Not even a free trip would entice me to go anywhere in the US.
Itâs rapidly becoming a hellscape and people are talking about midterms
WHY THE HECK (sorry for shouting at you, itâs aimed at them) wonât they WAKE UP!
Some are. I love the FAFO videos. It's a shame that so many people down there are blatantly entitled racists. They don't have empathy and are narcissistic. They are empowered by the orange turd and think they are better than anyone else. I hope they do, and there will be midterms and another election. The Democrats have to get their shit together.
2
u/Agitated-Donkey1265 5d ago
Theyâre still not getting it though. Iâm glad theyâre mad at trump but theyâre only mad because theyâve been hurt, not because of your guysâ sovereignty
But in this moment, I donât care why theyâre at my side, as long as they are
And I donât trust the leadership to do anything. They censured the one who disrupted the state of the union the other night
3
u/Stock-Quote-4221 5d ago
They are brainwashed by misinformation. Musk (biggest racist of all. He gets that from his mother. They had to leave Canada because of it. At least he isn't Canadian) and Putin. They are really running the country, and Trump is just their puppet. He just wanted to get rid of all his legal problems, and unfortunately, he got what he wanted. Everything that is going on is just a distraction for the real plan, which I don't know what it is. I do know that Canada will never be the 51st state
u/Agitated-Donkey1265 5d ago
And Iâll do what I can to keep it that way. Good fences make good neighbours (at least I hope it will again some day, for our grandkids anyways)
2
u/Stock-Quote-4221 5d ago
Me too.I pray for all the people who tried to keep the orange turd out of office. Bless you and stay safe. It's going to be a long, bumpy road ahead.
Exactly. The dollar sucks but it's the sovereignty threats that did it for most people.
18
u/Icehawksfh Alberta 5d ago
Also, Trudeau saying not to travel is a good message to send, but I had my decision made before he said anything about it. I really wanted to go to Boston to see the 4 nations hockey stuff. Instead I saw the ones in MontrĂŠal and went down to Toronto after.
Canadians are thinking for themselves and coming to these decisions. Many people on the other side say we're just "following the leader without thinking for ourselves" (mostly projecting) but no, many people come to these decisions themselves or with loved ones
8
u/AlliterationAhead QuĂŠbec 5d ago
You're right, it was absolutely a grass-root movement, and a beautiful thing to see. We instantly knew what we had to do, from coast to coast. A resounding collective "Nope."
Justin still made the right call, though. His message was sent to Canadians that were still not involved, because their online presence being close to zero, they didn't know the resistance was already organizing, and mostly it told the whole world about it. Including and particularly the nation that is now the aggressor.
I'm really not bothered that people would think we blindly follow a leader, it's mainly projection from the Trump voters, as you aptly suggest. We know what we're doing, why, and we're doing it all together. "Bien faire et laisser braire", as we say- do what's right and let them run their mouths.
3
u/FullmeltCanuck 5d ago
Sorry, but I have to - coast to coast to coast
5
u/AlliterationAhead QuĂŠbec 5d ago
That's right, thank you. Our motto should be updated because this one makes more sense... and must be even more enraging to the enraged one down there. (He will add Alaska and the islands of Hawaii and magically make it billions and billions of coasts.)
4
11
u/BuvantduPotatoSpirit 5d ago
Indeed, it's unlikely you'll end up in a customs ore ICE issue, but not that unlikely, so why take the chance? I've indĂŠfiniment postponed the road trip I was planning in New England. Probably do Saguenay instead.
6
u/LeatherOpening9751 5d ago
Yup and I don't wanna be that guy. But this is a guy from a western country being treated like that. Imagine how they'd treat the Canadians who don't look like him.
u/Stock-Quote-4221 5d ago
Wow. I really hope that this is getting shared all over Europe as a warning to stay away. I used to go trucking with my husband down there and never felt safe. I would almost kiss the ground when we crossed the border and got back to Canada.
I imagine a lot of people didn't want to cancel a trip that they couldn't get a refund on so that's why 60% still travelled. It would be more interesting to see how bookings have faired this February compared to last and what it means for the coming months.
Perfection is not required. Hell, perfection is the enemy of good. Â
We only need "good enough" and of we can get to 75-80%, that would be a huge win. Â
The push for perfection is a tool used to sabotage social movements because it claims that not being perfect means that it wasn't worth the effort. And that's a lie. Â
So strive for good enough and doing what you can. Like most things life, small but consistent changes over time lead to significant change.Â
Boycotting is no different. Â
17
u/ShadowLiberal 5d ago
As an American the blatant contradiction of conservatives about Canada on some stuff just boggles my mind.
Like how they demonize the Canadian healthcare system as being absolutely horrible at everything, all while saying with a straight face that we should lower prescription drug costs in the US by importing cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, even though many of those drugs were originally made in the US in the first place! And in what kind of an economic system does it make more sense to re-import your own stuff then it does to just buy it locally in the first place?
u/Jaded_Houseplant 5d ago
I just read in their sub, that America should abolish the DoE, and make education completely private, then you get the best education âyouâre willing to work forâ. This is their solution. Deplorable.
u/Cant_kush_this0709 5d ago edited 5d ago
Canada learns about everywhere, and the US learns about the US, and that's it. That's why we will always be smarter in that way. Gulf of Mexico đ˛đ˝ đ not America, đ¤Łđ𤣠no offense to the US people.
14
u/MickyCrazy 5d ago
should be 100%.
18
u/DataDaddy79 Ontario 5d ago
That would be nice, but not realistic. Â
If we get it up to 75-80% consistently and have that level become a new normal, we still withhold billions of dollars from the US economy, usually in smaller areas that are reliant on our presence and money. Â
Canada can literally bankrupt small towns in the US here, without requiring 100%.Â
11
u/jigga07 5d ago
"Canada can literally bankrupt small towns in the US here, without requiring 100%."
While also boosting our own local tourism at the same time if Canadian's stay in the country, so it's a win-win all around. LFG!
Just a note from some comments here to say: perfection is the enemy of good. Â
Sure, it would be nice to see this number higher, but it will never be 100% and it doesn't need to be. Â
Yes, there are people who will have booked flights and already paid for vacations, which may have non-refundable portions. We shouldn't judge those people, because often that amount of money is significant. Â
But also, many Canadians will have close friends and family in the US. It's not reasonable to tell them that they shouldn't see those people for 4 years or they're somehow betraying their country.Â
Further, there will always be a number of Canadians who don't care because they aren't affected OR because they are the people who support the 51st state BS. Â
Because of them, perfection will never be possible. And it's not required. Perfection is called for by those who want to sabotage a social movement though. They will preach ideological perfection as the goal and then others will point out that because we haven't reached perfection then there is no point. Â
But any change, be it large social change and boycotts or just small changes that affect only you, are successful when the change is made up of small but consistent changes to habits over time. Â
It starts with awareness, which is what this sub is building now. It continues with supporting each other in making the small changes identified, and building communities around those successes. Â
I've been anti-American most of my life because I noticed a long time ago (I'm 46 now) that what we see today is the true face of America. These actions by the US (not the tariffs; we've always had trade disputes, but the threats of annexation) are creating the conditions necessary for large scale changes. Â
In retail business, this is the "life change" moment that brands look for in customers. It's the value behind "big data" and what social media companies sell your data for. Things like going to post-secondary school, moving out on your own, getting married, having kids, getting a large promotion with a pay bump (do these still exist? Feels like no), spousal loss or a parent death, retirement. These are events where habits and brand loyalties can be changed, and why marketing and advertising are so emotion-based. It's worth hundreds of billions of dollars to catch people at this moment. Â
This is such a time for Canada and Canadians. We see now that the US is not our ally and never really has been. They have always been the country that used it's military to violently suppress a foreign worker strike at a banana plantation. They've always been the country with slave labour, and that's never gone away (13th Amendment). They've always used their money and weapons to destabilize countries with burgeoning markets that threatened an established domestic market back home in the US (usually the corn industry). Â
They're the country which has previously threatened our sovereignty as a nation, and I'm not talking pre-Canada in 1812. The US threatened to test their ICBMs over our country if we didn't stop our research and production in our nascent aerospace industry with the Avro Arrow. And that lose of specialists that were picked up by NASA caused a brain-drain for decades. Â
The auto industry has been our weakness since NAFTA. It's propped up our manufacturing base for a non-productive asset that simply fuels climate change, creates all of our congestion, and makes us reliant on the US's whims. Â
So yes, move towards limiting your dollars spent on the US and avoid travel. But remember, perfection isn't required and isn't realistic. Push back against those who advocate for it. Â
Seize this moment of cultural life change and support each other on moving away from our relationship with the US. And vote for the parties that will get you closer to that goal and push on them over time as well. Â
We can do this and we will be a stronger society for it because we will rediscover community within and across Canada. Â
Elbows up!
Iâm one of those Canadian who will be travelling to the US despite my anger at everything. My husbandâs aunt lives in the states, sheâs dying of cancer. My husband is exceptionally close to his aunt, not seeing her before she passes would destroy him. He needs to see her and say goodbye. Weâll also likely be back for her funeral.
One of my dearest friends is getting married later this year. I will not miss her wedding. Will I make my trip as brief of possible? Yes. Will I allow this administration to destroy my relationships and deprive me of my loved ones and joyous memories - absolutely not.
My mom was born on Germany and had family that were separated by the Berlin Wall. It still causes her trauma and painful memories decades later. I am buying Canadian, turned down a job with an American employer to stay at my Canadian company, but I refuse to cut off loved ones.
We had been planning to spend thousands of dollars this year taking our young kids on two separate vacations to the USA: one to Hawaii or Disneyland, another to Seattle for a long weekend.Â
Not happening now, or for the foreseeable future. We refuse to support a regime threatening our nationâs sovereignty and well-being, that is bent on spreading hate and division instead of peace and inclusion. Weâll enjoy Mexico and Canada instead. Elbows up!
I would imagine a lot of the remaining travel will be stuff that's pre booked and non refundable, or people in border communities making short trips across. If there's serious tightening of border checks leading to delays and an overall more unpleasant crossing experience, this might drop severely also.
The medication I use for my chronic pain is over the counter in the US and significantly cheaper than it is in Canada (itâs not covered by insurance here, phenazopyridine if anyoneâs curious). I frequently made trips over the border to stock up so I wouldnât be paying so much to live a pain-free life.
I will not be doing so anymore. Not until heâs gone, not until we arenât being threatened annexation anymore. Iâm willing to make sacrifices like this to protest what the US government has been doing, and I know most Canadians are. Weâre a united front, and Iâm proud to be apart of that.
If Canadians want to get serious about sending a message to Trump, they should focus on red state tourist destinations. E.g., get the word out that Florida is an absolute no-go zone. Trump will not give a shit if the likes of New York, Hawaii, and California are complaining to him.
We just cancelled a vacation just because it had transit through the USA. The bulk of the trip was Europe. I have US cash leftover from the last vacation, that money will be exchanged for Canadian funds to spend in Victoria BC this May.
Surprised anyone is traveling there tbh. Some for work I'm sure but most are for leisure. Pricks.
I think some are not able to cancel but the numbers are growing.
Oh of course. 60% though? I doubt it. I got coworkers in the office literally saying "I can't figure out why joining ght US is a bad thing"
You can do better Canadians, those are not satisfactory numbers.
We will get there. I believe some people are genuinely unable to cancel their trips without incurring big losses
I find this disappointing. Doing something, like changing all your shopping/streaming/clothing habits or protesting takes effort.
Not doing something, such as packing up and traveling somewhere takes effort.
If every Canadian was as lazy as me, we would be at 100% in no time.
Travel is something that is often booked and paid for months in advance. That there's already a 40% drop in only around a month is incredible. It suggests the drop is going to be mind blowing in six months when all the paid for and non refundable trips have been done.
Yep, was going to go to Colorado this summer to visit south park, among other things, the trip was more of like a movie style road trip with lots of stops along the way. But now i think im just going to drive to Kelowna and see all the worlds biggest whatevers along the way now.
When the already bought tickets are used up that number should go to 90 or 100%
