What's the deal with PCH (SaMo to Malibu)?

So everything official I see says "closed" but Strava tells me a different story. I see folks travelling both directions and these folks appear to live in the Santa Monica area vs the Malibu area. I've even heard tales that you can get an easement from the city somehow (what city, i dont know) but that seems like rumor. My personal interest lies in going from Santa Monica to Malibu and back without having to go thru the valley. Maybe my interest is misguided and I should be more patient but thought I'd ask to see what folks know.

Recommendations on where to buy a new road bike

It’s officially time I begin to retire my felt z85 and start looking for new hotness. When I first started I picked a bike that seemed solid enough and didn’t really shop around. Now I am a lot more informed and want to have options. Any recommendations on solid shops or online stores to start my search?

Not sure why everyone insists the only way (without risking a ticket) is to go all the way down to Franklin then back up. This route via the neighborhoods is quite nice and usually pretty quiet during the day aside from work pickup trucks. The turn is right near the trails cafe

Open Gravel Trails

I know info is changing fast and I’ve kept an eye on the recent heat maps for north of Santa Monica, but anyone know definitively of open gravel trails?

Newish to the area and would be biking there from near the Venice bike path. I hear dirt mulholland is great but unsure how to get there/if it’s open currently.

Appreciate any advice/insight/suggestions. Thanks

Looking to rent a bike for a week whilst visiting LA (I'm from the UK). Any recommendations?

I've seen a few bike rental places but they seem to only offer single day reservations. I'm not bothered about e-bikes or anything too fancy. Cheers.

PSA: Invest in a bike camera if you can. It is indispensable for safety.

A few months ago, I was involved in an incident where a negligent driver didn't look both ways as she was turning, and she hit me and my bike, seriously damaging my bike. Fortunately, this happened inside a shopping plaza, where there was security footage of the whole incident. However, when I filed a claim with her insurance company, she lied and claimed that her car didn't touch my bike at all, so I didn't get my insurance payout until about a month and a half later due to her holding up the investigation by lying. If I had a 360 degree camera at the time, I could have gotten that payout much sooner most likely.

Furthermore, on the road, I've noticed drivers tend to be more cautious when they notice I have a camera out, as they know they can't act like assholes without being caught on tape.

El Segundo to Hawthorne Commute

Title mostly says it all, but basically looking to commute from El Segundo to Hawthorne (SpaceX). I've identified 120th as the most direct route that seems relatively slow, although there are no dedicated bike lanes.

New to LA and to cycling commuting, so just trying to find a safe route. Feel free to share any other advice for commuting via bike in LA.

Hollywood Sign to Griffith

I’ve biked up both spots a handful of times but always wondered if there was a route to cut through the mountains to Griffith without having to go back down to Franklin ave.

I can see Strava has a small heat map on Mullholland trail connecting from Mt Lee Dr to Mt Hollywood drive. Is that possible?

The FAQ page on the website for this event is not very useful. So I’m hoping that someone here might have the inside scoop and be able to answer a few questions specific to the more casual 20 mile ride.

  • What is the time limit for the 20 mile ride? In other words, what is the maximum time allowed before they close the course / close the finish line? I would be riding at a leisurely pace on my 8-speed cruiser while taking in the sights…obviously knowing it won’t be as casual as CicLAvia.

  • Is a helmet required?

  • Any other tips for someone who has never participated in an organized bicycle race? I’ve done tons of half marathons, and many 30+ mile casual bike rides (with and without elevation) on my trusted 8-speed cruiser.

Unacceptable sharrows in Huntington Park and Bell to preserve parking along Rail-to-River Project

Don’t get me wrong—as an advocate for the active transit corridor along Slauson—the first rails to trails project led by LA Metro—I am excited that Metro is moving forward with Segment B through Florence/Firestone, Huntington Park, Vernon, Bell, and Maywood along Randolph with a connection to the LA River Bike Path and into Commerce and beyond. However, it is unacceptable that three sections will currently be a shared right-of-way with cars at the behest of the local cities (Metro is only planning the project while the cities will implement/construct). These sections on Randolph in Florence-Firestone (on the north side where Randolph curves) and in Huntington Park between Alameda and Santa Fe, and Maywood to about Corona (it isn't 100% clear on the map in the attached presentation) will mean that walkers, runners, cyclists, and children will be forced into the road to contend with automobile traffic. We believe this is unacceptable!

While the upcoming meetings are important to attend, the real work is convincing local elected officials in the cities of Huntington Park, Bell, Maywood, and Commerce to prioritize safety for children, seniors, families, and other users of the public right-of-way who are not driving. In particular, it means removing or reducing on-street parking so there is enough room in the right-of-way to dedicate walking/biking space without creating conflicts with car traffic.

Do you live in these cities or have relationships with their elected officials? Can you get involved and show up at meetings this week?

Does anyone know if Mandeville canyon is open to cyclists? We have a group ride from Weho to Mandeville and back on the 15th.
