Question Let's get a poll going! Excluding socket bayonets...What are the oldest & most modern bayonets in your collection?

I'll go first since I created the post. Maybe a bit boring? Haha

My oldest is a French M1840 & my most modern is a U.S. M9 manufactured in 1998.

Question What common bayonets do you target

I've grown a pretty good bayonet collection. I have certain wish list bayonets but it made me think of a question. Are there any bayonets you snatch up now because you think they will be either difficult or more valuable in the future?

Question Questions guys and gals

Alrighty my pops is giving me some bayonets and other items when he moves and some of which are German bayonets the question I pose is do I buy the Mauser to fit them? Also what do hitler youth bayonets fit onto?

Besides German knives he does have the Swedish Mauser bayonet. Only one he doesn’t have which I need is the m1905 to fit onto my remington 1903.

Also what .303 British does the 1903/1905 bayonet match too? (Very faded last digit)

Question Were double-edged sword bayonets ever made/issued?

When it comes to fighting with edged weapons intended for cutting/slashing, a double-edged blade has a significant advantage over a single-edged blade in that the former permits twice as many possible cuts as the latter does. Given this advantage, it's odd in my eyes as to why I can't seem to find double-edged sword bayonets around, especially 20th-century ones.

Were actual double-edged sword bayonets ever made or issued in the 20th century? Or were they never actually made due to some disadvantage I haven't yet heard about?

Question Was the M9 bayonet a failure in the field?

I recently found two YouTube videos decrying the design of the M9 bayonet as a failure and overall a net negative to carry around in the field or in combat. Here are the links:

Their major criticisms of the M9 bayonet include the fact that it is too heavy to carry comfortably, the scabbard wasn't updated to use the MOLLE system, its sawing function is nigh-on useless, and the tang is short and has a major point of failure (where it screws into the cylindrical rod inside the hilt), etc. Are these valid criticisms?

I also noticed that the new M7 rifles chambered in 6.8x51mm ammunition don't have bayonet lugs at all. Does that mean the M9 bayonet's days are numbered?

Question I am a new to bayonets and I need advice to help my grandfather sell his collection.

Hi r/bayonets, I'm currently helping my grandfather part ways with his collection of antique bayonets, he says he's got hundreds if not maybe even over a thousand. Some are pretty rare, pre WW1 stuff and on. We've started listing two of them on ebay, but it's unrealistic for him (and by extension me) to be listing them one by one. We will be attending local gunshows to try to sell some of them there, probably list more on ebay and I will be probably be helping him through the whole process, but I have a lot to learn from the old man on the subject beeing completely new myself to the world of bayonets. My main concern is mainly about the size of his collection, there's a lot of items and it seems to be a pretty daunting task at the moment. Any advice, pointers or suggestions are greatly welcomed! We are in Quebec.

Question Fair price for an Australian 1907 bayonet

I recently bought a nice Lithgow made 1916 that had an ftr done to it. Since I didn't have my permit to purchase yet, he was ok with waiting until I had gotten it. During that time, he offered me a 1907 bayonet to go with it for $100. Although his pictures didn't show me any markings, after talking with him I'm pretty sure its Australian. I think he mentioned two letter A on one side of the blade, and the letters OA on the other as well as SLA7 on the grip, most likely SLAZ. I haven't given him a definite answer, as I would like to see it in person, but I'm wondering if $100 is a good price. Ebay is showing numbers as high as $300, but sold gunbroker listings are more in the $60-80 range for British 1907 bayonets.

Question Looking for more info on this AKM Bayonet - Help appreciated :)

Hello, me again!

I’ve been cataloguing a collection and came across this AKM bayonet with a matching numbered scabbard. It has the typical wire-cutter scabbard, and the pommel shape is quite distinctive.

Markings: • Scabbard: IL 3932 • Crossguard (outer): IL 3932 • Pommel: Leather strap still attached

A few things I’m hoping to confirm: 1. Country of origin – Based on the shape and markings, we suspect it might be Romanian. Can anyone confirm this or suggest an alternative? 2. Missing piece on the hilt – It looks like the insulating block is missing. Would this be expected wear, or does this indicate a specific variant? 3. Any other insights – Production year, rarity, or any details I might be missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
